Statement by Senator Ezekiel Bazil on recent upsurge of violent crime

UWP Senator Ezekiel Bazil

Let me on behalf of the management and supporters of the UWP extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims who have lost their lives during the last nine months of this year and especially during the last three weeks.

Our prayers are with you. At the end of it all we all should seek to remain focus and composed in these trying times.

We ask all Dominicans to come together and focus on the victims of these crimes as we all are potential victims. We all should put aside our party colors at this time. Crime has no class. Crime bears no name tag.

It can affect the rich or poor, the police, teachers, vendors, business person, students, other public servants, the man cleaning the drains and the one on the street.

We note the piece meal approach to the present crime issue. We therefore call for a symposium on crime as a first step towards a collective approach to dealing with this serious matter. This collective approach should include, but not limited to, Government Officials, the Police, the Judiciary ,Cadet Core, State College, Trade Unions, Teachers , Youth Organizations, Prison Officials, DAIC, Taxi and Tour operators, Truckers,   NGO’s and the Diaspora . The United Workers Party is in the process of writing to the Government on this matter.

We cannot and should not underestimate the contributions of Dominican criminologist Peter St. Jean and former Scotland Yard detective David Michael, to crime prevention in Dominica.

We also call on the Government to install a fully appointed Police Commissioner and a Deputy Commissioner in an effort to establish a stable and confident crime fighting environment.

We call on all citizens to remain calm yet focused. We call on the leaders to act responsibly. We call on the churches to pray, on the judiciary and the police to stop the public bickering. We call on parents and society to help mold the minds of the youth. And we call on the youth be kind, patient and find alternative ways to resolve disputes.

We stress that six murders in fourteen days are unacceptable in  a small nation like ours. We also repeat that the over seven unsolved murders committed in the community of Wesley over the past few years is unacceptable. We hope one day that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. We join in condemning all acts of violence.

The United Workers Party remains committed to working with all in the best interest, safety and well being of our people.

We seek God’s Blessings as a nation.

Senator Ezekiel Bazil
United Workers Party

You said: “i hope the seeing is in there 18 seats constituencyy them crimes hapenning” so what about the murder which took place in MARIGOT? It was the ‘goldtooth’ dude whom was stabbed in his vehicle? Is that one of the 18 seats Labour won as well?

Oh and by the way, the word is CONSTITUENCY!

I wrote the following in response to Prime Minister Skerrit taking up discussions regarding the Capital Punishment in Dominica.

    “Finally – Skerrit waking up!!!!!
Thank you Mr. Prime Minister – For taking this issue to the next level. Dominica need to have this option. We might never use it, but we need it as a deterrent to these knuckle-heads, wanna-be gangstas, running around our country trying to be “Dominica Most Wanted”
Thank you Mr. Skerrit – lets hope there isn’t too much opposition to this initiative.
Damn – I feel good this morning. “God Bless Dominica First, and later for the rest of those hypocrites, who would kill a baby in a womb, but are too coward to put a murderer in a well deceived tomb.”
Thank You Dominica – Now let’s start taking our country back from a place where Crime Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Now Senator Ezekiel Bazil – United Workers Party, what’s your stand on DOMINICA MURDER EPIDEMIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!——— are you praying, wishing, hoping, conferencing or doing voodoo for a solution!
Doh feel bad, Mr. Senator, before Mr. Skerrit saw the writings on the web, he wanted to give “love a chance”

Typical ——- You guys always saying a lot of nice things but technically not saying anything at all.

You spreading a big net to encompass everyone in your solution

“This collective approach should include, but not limited to, Government Officials, the Police, the Judiciary, Cadet Core, State College, Trade Unions, Teachers, Youth Organizations, Prison Officials, DAIC, Taxi and Tour operators, Truckers, NGO’s and the Diaspora.”

This is all puppy talk – tell me how, you see this problem being remedied

What are you bringing to the table. Do you support tougher firearm laws, the death penalty,

Where does UWP stand in this Murder Epidemic !

I got nothing from you piece, but sound bits and niceties, but no solution to the Murder Epidemic

    – HAH Politics as usual.

Dominica is in a crisis – Call or text the PM don’t write no letter. — we need solutions DUDE!

I agree with the majority of Mr. Bazil’s statement. Crime is everybody’s business.

Crime is a multifaceted problem that need to addressed in the like manner. A symposium is a nice idea, if it don’t turn out to be a talk fest. Yes, I don’t understand the apparent foot dragging on appointing a permanent Commissioner of Police. At this critical juncture we need one someone with concrete crime fighting strategies,

Very importantly crime needs to be addressed legislatively. The laws we have in our books are archaic and need to be amended to reflect evolving trends in criminality. This can only be done within the confines of parliament.

@marlaiseVG: Even though i’m all for DLP , Mr. Bazil made some good comments , couple that with the PM, we need to operate in love, then with Ausrie comes Prayer. We have to break the cycle of crime and if parliament meet on that we will some sort of reform.

It takes crime to bring our parliament together, think about it. God allows certain things to bring countries and people together.

I am just a bit surprised that Sen Bazil was the chosen one to speak on behalf of the party on a matter where I felt the leadership would have spoken out in a louder voice. But I think although late, the statement was a good one.

    October 6, 2010

@Rocks: We would need to see more consistent positive statements and actions from the senator and his associates before respect can be claimed.

I hope they now realise how much time they have wasted and how very aliented they have become because of their ill thought out actions. It is also very noticable how they use a different messenger each time. Thank goodness this one has not shot himself in the foot like the previous, at least he won’t have to go into hiding like the others to lick their wounds.

I hope this marks a turning point where Dominica and all it’s people are put first before petty and personal egos.

@ Devoted Dominican I think Mr. Bazil statement was very unbiased and appropriate for the trying times that Dominica is experiencing right now. It really doesn’t matter who said it. You are so biased and one track minded in your political support that you are trying your best to turn his statement into a political thing. I am not associated to any political party in Dominica as a matter of fact I don’t like any of them but Mr. Bazil was precise and straight to the point and that’s what we need in Dominica right now.

Secondly please respect the young man as a Senator.

Be a little more open minded please.

We all read the hate filled rants from UWP supporters on DNO blaming the government for every death in DA. Some even hoped that the PM and the rest of the government would have gotten into the plane at the first night landing, so they all would die if the plane crashed.

Statements like these from supporters are not made in a vacuum, it’s the leaders that spark the fire that causes hate speech. So i was surprise when i read this non-partison statement by you sir, GOOD JOB. Sadly your party is not known for talking like that, but i hope you sir become a catalyst for the rest of the party, especially the older heads.

Positive words and spoken in way one would expect of a proper statesman, but the first thing that comes to my mind is Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. So I will always remain skeptical until there is a more consistent flow of professionalism from those quarters. So to quote Aristotle ‘one swallow does not make a summer’.

I truly hope this signals a turning point in the attitude and approach of the opposition party and will now start working more positively for the well being of the nation and electorate.

A great move so please, please stay on the track of effective opposition!

  42. October 5, 2010

Good first start senator, i am still giving all the credit to D.N.O and specific mention must go to one of our many contributors on D. N.O Mr/ mrs/miss Anonymos which ever applies” thats one of the reasons i access D.N.O for some news inspite of the fact that there`s always more BETH, POLITICS, and hatered but every now and then some one comes out with a post that makes scense and make no mistake about it people from all over the World is reading the News. Anonymos did make alot of scense couple days ago with regards to what the people in position should make a difference and come out and condem all acts of violence. I hope its not all talk and no action for we are watching we need to take hold of our country from those malcontent whom ever they are and where ever they are hiding fish them out from their rat hole. I suggest that a call should go out to all able man or woman to come forward to join a volenteer crime watch group to ta ckle and patrol areas of activities where crimes are commited i am ready to roll.

well said sir, continue on this path and you may soon be considered to take the reins of the party.

  44. On De Fence
    October 5, 2010

@Anonymous: Are you kidding me about the most unbiased statement you have heard from anyone since the spate of killings in Dominica, are you kidding me?

This is the time when action more that symposium is needed in Dominica to stop the spate of killings, we do not need another talk shop, this is typical UWP. The leaders have sacrifice Bazil on the Political Alter because Dominicans have seen through them (Ron, Edison and Hector)

The statement by Mr. Bazil, “We also call on the Government to install a fully appointed Police Commissioner and a Deputy Commissioner in an effort to establish a stable and confident crime fighting environment” cannot be more biased than that. Was Mr. Bazil in a COMA as it were, when his leaders attempted to hold Dominica hostage and almost created a Constitution crisis by their refusal to appoint a Leader of the Opposition immediately after the December 2009 General Elections? Had it not been for the astute thinking of the PM and that of the President, Dominica would have been without an Acting and Deputy Police Commissioner up till last week when you all jokers took your oath of office.

Mr. Bazil went on to call on all leaders to act responsibly. Is he now asking his (UWP) leaders to include himself to act responsibly? Should that be the case, then I say “BRAVO”. While you and your party continued to walk out of Parliament and acted irresponsibly, you and your party were all over the Island playing the Voters ID game at the expense of the youth and less fortunate ones in society. When you and your party failed to go to Parliament to pass bill in the interest of the people you’re failing the youth and by extension Dominicans.

I now look forward to seeing you and your political leaders go back to Parliament and join hands with Government as you now proclaim, to work together, in passing strong legislation to include the Firearms Act so as to ensure a safe society, and a society with less violence as that experience over the last two weeks.

    I will be watching.

Good Morning! UWP, rise and shine you all must be refreshed after sleeping for the last 2 weeks. I see it didnt do you all much good the most all you could come up with is a talk shop eloquently put together but only saying we must get together and talk. Please! This was grand opportunity to get Dominicans attention with a concrete inspiring plan on dealing with our crime issues and over shadow the PM who’s only idea of a solution is more love, All you coming with a talk shop solution! AAAAALAAAAASSSSS Bazil!!!!!!!!! A symposium again. I will not even read further on that BS statement of yours. Boy you better attend parliament and stop the childsplay you and Eddo and Spraggs and the rest are doing. That in itself is a crime against the people of DA. Remember there are many ways to skin a cat.
You ‘doh well’ attend a sitting of the house yet and you begining to sound like the rest of the played-out politicians. Get to the house of parliament and do your job/duty.
Another symposium to waste time and money? What has come out of ALL the past symposiums? The reports are on the shelves go dust them out.
You all need to play your opposition role properly and stop destabilizing the country FURTHER. If you were an investor would you invest in a country where the Government (opposition included) officials cannot behave like civilized men?

Well said young man.Senator Bazil, it is pleasing to see your party coming forward and being positive for once. I suppose this statement was prepared by you personally,as if there was any input from Eddie or Ron it would have definetly been reading in a different light.
It is now down to people like you and Spaggs to distance yourself from all those negative comments coming from your “elders” and give the Dominican people a real alternative Government.
As responsible Politicians that is the manner in which you should conduct your affairs.
