Stockfarm man sentenced for back stabbing

Telford George, also known as Kerry of Stockfarm, will serve 250 hours of community service, a three-year suspended sentence and pay $5,000 compensation in one year or he faces six months jail, for stabbing a Stockfarm man in the upper back last December.

George, 20, appeared before Justice Birnie Stephenson-Brooks yesterday and pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Denny Leblanc, 20, following an argument between them on December 29, 2009.

State lawyer Wayne Norde, who presented the facts of the case to the court, said that sometime after midnight on the said date, the complainant went to a Polos Bar located in Simon Bolivar, Stockfarm where he met a friend – Joel Delsol – and opened a conversation with him. Subsequently, George came and joined the discussion which at the time was about customs excise tax charged on importing motor vehicles into the island.

Norde said that the conversation continued but at some point led to a heated argument between George and the complainant.

“The accused then made a comment that his mother sent thousands of dollars every month. According to the complainant, he began laughing… The complainant then went inside the bar and the accused followed him inside of the bar and pushed him several times until he ended up on the opposite side of the bar,” Norde told the court.

“ The complainant decided he would leave the area to avoid further problems therefore began walking home. The accused followed him out of the gate and onto the public road. About 20 feet away from the gate, the accused pulled a knife and stabbed the complainant in his upper back. The complainant turned back and saw the accused with a knife and the accused said [I will kill you, I will kill you.] He then turned and walked back towards the bar,” the prosecutor said.

Leblanc had an injured rib in which he had to undergo lung physiotherapy with a surgical balloon while a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Norde said.

When confronted on the matter a day after the incident, George told police, “I hear mister in the hospital, but I don’t know about that.”

He later admitted in an interview with police that he was at the bar arguing with Leblanc but could not remember some pertinent issues which led to the stabbing.

George’s three-year sentence was suspended for three years. He will complete his community service by July 30, 2011 or he will face 18 months in prison.

@mmm: and all the other mm . Stopt this senseless hititng at Kerry. Now is a time of reflection for all you young men. To avoid making these mistakes again. Say nothing if you can say something uplifting. Kerry and Denny were friends. Rather unfortunate this happenned. Your comments points to the fact that you condone violence. Kerry has gone to court and he has been convicted and did all of you read that “he pleaded guilty” . He has accepted responsibility and maybe that is why his sentence was not so harsh. Please in the name of peace stop spewing negative and violent condoning comments. Say nothing rather than saying these comments. Kerry and Denny please do not listen to those who would like to see a replay. Accept where you both went wrong and move on. Let the past die and use what happened as a lesson.

Watcher and a mum of 20 year old and younger. Peace and tolerance to the youths of our lovely nature isle of the caribbean – Dominca. And love to you both Kerry and Denny.

@frend of both: Look at my earlier comment.

I am happy you are friend of both and you need to do your little thing to be mediator and to talk to Kerry and let him know he made a terrible mistake which could have cost Denny’s life. You said that Denny cursed Kerry which also Denny should not have done. But this is not acceptable that friends argument should end like this.

To be a good friend to both, you have to be honest with both of them and as a friend of both, you need to discuss honestly that conflicts should never end as such and discussions should open. Do not side one over the other. Show each their weaknesses. The youngsters will respect you for this. There will always be differences in opinion and we should be tolerant of each others opinion even we don’t agree. Also a very vital lesson learnt here – we must learn to speak properly to each other with respect. The slangs you as young persons use , I won’t repeat, you know how you youngsters speak can be very insultive and hurt the other person. Do unto others as you would like others do unto you – The Golden Rule. Speak intelligently and practice not using the foul four letttered words and it will become habitual to speak properly. It is not because everyone is doing or saying that it is correct. It is not everything that you see on the Television that you must adopt. There is a lot of rubbish on the TV that young persons try to imitate.

One does not add fuel to a fire when one is wrong. Humility is something we have to learn. When the heat is on , we have to know when to quit and discuss another day when heated heads have sobered.

The Lord bless you friends of both.

People sometimes we comment and we do not think of what we say. We can be very hypocritical ourselves and I will tell you why. When those things are on our doorstep, we want our friends and families to be pardoned by the court system. When someone else get pardoned we can go on and go on.. because it is not our brother, sister etc .. Kerry should not have stabbed Leblanc in the back especially in following the news item, we can deduce that they were friend and living in the same community of Stock Farm. We as parents and mature adults now must realise that this is a serious problem in our country where our young people cannot resolve conflicts and resort to violence even on their own friends. The question is how do we resolve these issues without blaming policy makers and other persons? Probably Kerry was repentant and I am sure he is. So when things do not go the way that we would like to be in our human eyes, then we have to accept and do not use our tongue to do more harm than good. Kerry is a first time offender and I am sure, we would not like to see our young 20 year olds flood the prisons and become repeated offenders. The Almighty Father is the final Judge and Jury and all the time we have to accept his will. He will have mercy upon who he will have mercy.

Let us look within ourselves and search. Are we teaching our children to be tolerant of other persons opinion? Some of the comments that are spewed at persons in this forum are so negative that our young persons are taught to be rude and be indecent in their speaking. They are the ones who are reading these comments since they are the IT generation. They use the computer more than us adults . Our mannerism daily send a clear message to them that it is ok to swear and do this and that (The comments are so degrading and negative). When we are finished we become Judge, Jury and Executioner. Who ever gave us the right to do so?
Let us pray for our youngsters and be the role model that they are expected to look upon. It is very difficult in these times but together we must continue to pray.

As for Kerry , please appologise to Leblanc and learn from this mistake. It was a very harsh mistake since you could have killed him. Denny I know that Kerry is sorry so if he apologise accept in good faith. You all were friends, I know it can be hard but just remember that our Father is always forgiving us on a daily basis. Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord.

it was not as bad as the complainant made it look… yes he got stabbed but he was barely wounded this was brought into court hands because of spite and utter ignorance. i do not agree with the stabbing but he had no right to tell him about his mother. so he had to suffer the consiquences. this story is being exsagerated to make one side of the party look at its worst… we are only hearing one side of the story… ask the proper questions and you will get the real answers…

that proves again that the court system is there to defend the intrests of the criminals and not the good hard working citizens of our good country. violent crimes are increasing bcause these criminals are walking away free and so if they can do it and get away i will do the same thing, thats what we will all say . its time that these judges get down to business and defend the good people of these country. give these criminals the pay that is due for their crimes. while i dont condone drugs or any kind i just want to ask,why should a man go to jail for 1 ganga or even an ounce and muders and drug dealers and money launderers and buglars go free ? is that what we call justice? what do we xpect when we alllow criminals to go frEE? increase in crime. cant the government not fire those judges for not doing a proper job? please let me no

How can you stab a man in his “BACK!” , threaten to kill him, get him admitted to hospital and then get sentenced to community service with a fine and walk out of court? So Dominicans not seeing that judge needs to go!!! We must really ask ourselves if this judge has dominicas interest at heart.
