UPDATE: 1 injured in Portsmouth shooting incident

Police Public Relations Office (PRO) Claude Weekes has confirmed a shooting incident at Portsmouth on Friday morning where several gunshots were fired.

An individual was injured, as a result. It is alleged that the incident is drug-related. Weekes told this online publication that ongoing investigations will shed light on suspicions of the incident being drug-related.

“We are conducting investigation into the matter,” he noted.

On Friday evening he informed that police officers will soon conduct interviews with the alleged victim and suspects.

Some people in Portsmouth needs to stop encouraging the drug money. Even if you are poor and you see your children doing something that isn’t right correct them. You can never win by doing what is not right. I prefer to stay poor and clean than be rich and dirty. Keep Portsmouth alive the right way. It’s our home people!

You see, that’s where the problem is. Instead of passing blame we should look for solutions to this ongoing concern in our beautiful island. We are all hurting by this directly or otherwise, and this is not the reputation we want our country to have regardless whether it is occuring in one part of the country or the other. What can we do as a people to make it better? We need to come together, and let those who represent us know what we would like done. I love my country but now I am scared of being certain places alone as a woman. So imagine someone who is not a citizen and just hears about Dominica. How do you think they feel? We need to find a solution, not pass blame…

i am from portsmouth and im not gonna label portsmouth or any other villlage as who have d baddest people or gangsters every village has had some incident or another some mayb worse than others. i have lived in portsmouth all of my life and we are loving and caring people just like every other village mistakes are made things happen thats life but at the end of it all even if mistakes are made people need to b held accountable for there actions and thats the main point to get the criminals and drug dealers off the street so that people can b safe once again. i love where i live i may not like the stupid and idiotic mistakes some people make but there only human nobody is perfect so stop labeling grandbay people as bad people i have been there couple of times and they are sweet loving people just like portsmouth people

Silly Rabbits Tricks are for kids
    Dominica is a funny place
So long Dominicans learn police too retarded to talk to. You tell police “I just see mr thief by Ma so and so” one time the partner coming by u and well tense want to know why you snitch on his sin. Who going and tell nobody anything when such scenarios are persistent?

Dominica needs some serious punishment to deter crime
for e.g. you thief and get caught on 3 separate occasions – off with your hand
You want to shoot people and play bad sling your rasclat up and let the person shoot you back or worse if you kill them firing squad time

Start giving criminals acid eyedrops to put

And to hell with if you catch them arrest them
EVERYBODY IN DOMINICA KNOW THE CRIMINALS
just arrest them and do the do we doh have to have ourself in no funny moral scenario
we trying to follow all the other countries that have technology and can afford to investigate properly and gather evidence longer than the mississippi river. Dominican police start beating and making gangsters disappear. when you catch them on d backdoor do like the french police does do and leave them there permanently
If you cannot take care of it then vigilante justice bound to come out and it will prevail

As for the whole Possie grand bay sin
Grand Bay people irie I have a few friends there
however going to grandbay as an outsider there are some who will make it very “inconvenient” for you

All I have to say is stop being bias. Yes some thugs come from other communities and infest the place with their negative behaviors. But this time that was not the case. They are both from Possie. We should not put hand in fire for peeps who do wrong because they come from the same village as we come from or because they might be family related or some friend. Stop being bias. Possie have alot of so called thugs that need to be straightened up so that the innocent might not get caught up in their crimes. And just so you know I am from possie too!!!!!!!!

    Dear Fellowmen and Women,

I am reading these comments and to be honest it is very disappointing. I recall in growing up in Portsmouth we ahd a few people from Grandbay who resided there and most probably up to this present time. Why are we slating each other communities?. What we should be doing is to pray and help each other, because we are one nation. Not a divided one.

its a sad day in dominica, when persons fron various villages or towns are competing/ arguing who is the baddest villlage/ town.

is that what our coutry come too ?
is that the example we want to leave for our children and our grandchildren?
is that what was meant by the next level?
when will the authorities take a serious look at crime?
    where is our churches/pastors/priest/bishop.reverend.?
are the churches too busy in gloryfying the next level message and not speaking truth to power?

I ASK ALL DOMINICANS TO SAY A PRAY FOR DOMINICA, GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES AND PRAY….ASK GOD FOR FORGIVENESS….PRAY THAT OUR COUNTRY DOESNT COME LIKE JAMAICA, ST. KITTS, ST LUCIA ETC…..PRAY THAT WE CAN TRULY BE TAKEN TO THE HIGHER LEVEL AND NOT THE NEXT LEVEL…..PRAY…PRAY….PRAY!!!!!!!!!

I’ve heard many stories, from residents of Portsmouth, of crimes against tourists (theft/robbery, beatings etc) & theft of properties from local residents to the point that the people of Portsmouth cannot sleep with their doors unlocked.
This is for those who think Grandbay is the worst village in Dominica : In Grandbay, anybody can walk through the community at any time (day or night) without fear of being robbed, raped or attacked.
People can & do sleep with their doors & windows opened without fear of having their residence burglarized.
Grandbay is a close-knit community where everyone knows everybody & strangers are usually embraced & welcomed into the village.

If you haven’t been to Grandbay then you don’t know Grandbay. Knowing one terrible person from that community doesn’t make the entire village the worst place in Dominica.

Shockingly, I have read of the rash of crimes in Dominica and gun related ones. I say to myself, Dominica does not have a gun shop. Guns are not being sold in Dominica stores. How were these guns brought to Dominica? Were they by airplanes, in suitcases and by boats or other? Somehow and by whatever means they were brought to Dominica.
The government needs to determine how they arrived in Dominica and who was responsible for allowing them in. This means, an investigation should be conducted.
The last thing that a small and peaceful island as Dominica needs is gun-toting criminals. If there are any people who are employed in air traffic and in certain government areas where luggage is handled, they should also be investigated and also cautioned about this.
Dominica needs honest government and airline workers to prevent guns from entering the country and to eradicate them. If this is not done, this situation will escalate.
Those who also bring and allow guns into the island, just think: “God is observing and taking note of your actions.” You will not escape His fair and just wrath, be it in this lifetime or in the hereafter. Your actions to the end will condemn you for all eternity.
I would like to see Dominica crime-free of such deadly types of crimes of all which also destroy lives and property and place fear in people.
I recall those days when we kept our doors and windows opened and unlocked and slept with our windows open. We had no fear of criminals. No more in this era. What has happened?
The Fifth Commandment of God is “Thou shalt not kill.”
The Seventh Commandment is: “Thou shalt not steal.”
Do you think that you, criminals and gun-toting people will ever escape from God’s fair and just recompense? No way!
Do what is right and respect the lives and property of people as you expect same from them.

    @Mic:

Please let us not trash either Grand Bay and Portsmouth people or other villagers. There is good and bad in every village. No exception, people of the world, wherever they reside and whatever their nationality, race, color or creed. By interacting with some people, we do experience who and what they are.
When I resided in Dominica, I recall that there was a crime wave in Grandbay. Not only that, obeah.
I know some Grand Bay people who reside here. I recall once when we got together there was a relevant conversation and I mentioned that I had heard there was a $1.00 walking on the street of Grand Bay. One person from Grand Bay said it was a $5.00. We had a good laugh about that. They are broadminded people and not offended by remarks as long as they are said within a certain, relevant conversation.
Furthermore, this exists throughout the island. Dominica has the French influence and from what I heard, there is a lot of that in the French islands.
I also mentioned that when I visited Dominica I read about a house in Grand Bay which was demolished and a bottle was found underneath the steps. In that bottle were names of people along with nails. It depends what we say but how we say it and under what conditions we say it.
We do not attack people and all the people. If per chance the conversation comes up, we will talk about it and discuss it but not to accuse anyone specifically the innocent. There are many innocent people in Grand Bay just as in Portsmouth and vice versa.
Note the crime wave throughout the island. This is what we should be concerned about and how to eradicate it.
For the honor and glory of God and for peace sake, through the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, love one another and not point fingers. Assist your country by reporting crimes, if you observe them being committed. God expects this of practicing Christians.

    @Karkabeff:

Good idea about email reporting. We, in Toronto, have crime stoppers phone number and the Police number. It is our business to keep these numbers close at hand, even on our person as we go about our business in the city. I have the numbers right beside my computer and on my bedroom night table. Hopefully, there will be no intruders.
If the government and police want help from the public, they should have provide an email address in this age of technology.
Some people will be afraid to go to the police – in person. Therefore, the government and police authorities must encourage the public to report crimes since the police cannot be always present. They need the assistance of the public to also fight crimes.
If they report a crime, their names must not be divulged to the Media. They must recognize the confidentiality and safeguard those who report crimes. Otherwise, the police will not get cooperation from the public.

When is the Attorney General, DPP and Commissioner of police going to see it fit to get with the retired chiefs and deputies and form a Council of Chief to advise the commissioner etc? Dca does not have NO bad man just a few punks playing gangstar. You should see how humble they are when in police custody. They even fraid to sneeze. Just ask those accused of the recent sea murders. Only bad in public.
Also, with the advert of the internet why is there not an email address published and broadcasted in the media for crimes to be reported. That email should go straight to the DPP, Commissioner and deputy. People can always report anonimously. Or better yet, a website for the police where someone can go and post information on a crime just like we are doing here. This place lacks vision and in the process criminals and so called badmen florish.

All time Dominica do not adopt laws like they have in Singapore and them places, crime is going to be rampant.

The Bible itself says ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. As soon as them ‘conservative educated’ Dominicans start coming with their nonesense about stop beating and caning, Dominica have a high influx of crime. If there isn’t serious detterent then how can we lessen crime?

Just this month, Singapore sentenced a Swiss guy to 5 months jail and a couple strokes with the cane, just for writing graffiti on trains. Do you believe that this guy will ever do that again?

Many people are testifying that this is one of the saftest societies to live or visit. Children play in the streets without having fear of being kidnapped and assaulted, tourists travel safely there without fear, drug dealers are arrested and hanged 3 months after sentencing and crime is at a low.

When I was growing up, Dominica didn’t have them things there because there was retribution to pay for committing crimes. But we have wicked people high up in society, because the very ones that suppose to be protecting society are the very ones that profit by crime. Dominica seems to develop a new system of recycling criminals so that the big people can make as much money out of them as possible. The kind of small jail sentences and granting of bail for repeat offenders is in itself a crime against society.

That kind of new thing Dominica adopt there of not wanting to punish crime is the downfall of society. People can talk how they want but bad man not going to let go off their profitable lifestyle unless they are forced too. All the educating and talking ain’t gonna do sh.t. You have to make a few example of couple fellas. A few humiliating strokes of the cat-o-nine to go along with the jail sentence and a little hanging every now and then and fellas would be force to consider whether it is worth them to gain the world and lose their soul.

What all you waiting for, a few tourists to die first? Tourists only go where it is safe….

    I watchin’ still……
