Mitchel was stabbed to death on Jouvert morning

A 17-year-old juvenile been arrested and charged for the murder of 26-year-old Ken Mitchell of Gallion.

Mitchell was stabbed to death during the height of the J’ouvert parade on Carnival Monday.

The juvenile appeared, together with his mother, before a Roseau magistrate on Thursday where the charge was read to him.

He was not required to enter a plea since the offense is an indictable one.

Since he is a juvenile, in accordance with the law, the court had to be cleared for the matter to be heard.

Also his name cannot be published because of his age.

The accused teenager is represented by attorney at law, Dawn Yearwood Stewart.

Okay, he’s 17 years old BOY. The victim was 26 years old who went to Town to have a good time. Young people need to be focus on getting an EDUCATION the most important thing in their lives. The young boy left the comforts of his mother’s home STRAPPED with a weapon, Why? Now this young man is dead, not coming home to his mom, dad, brother(s), sister(s) or his friends. What are we going to do to help the BOY, mama came to his aid, now mama has to defend him.
The DOMINICA government needs to take action, help young people. Provide program that will enable young people to better themselves. Free education, free vocational training, EACH ONE, TEACH ONE. We as a nation need to elevate our young people’s mind. STOP KILLING OUR YOUNG BLACK BROTHERS.

I agree. If they are old enough to commit a crime/murder, their names should not be withheld and their faces should be shown. It is a kind of aiding and abetting, causing them to commit more crimes.
The Law should be changed. These are the type of matters that D/cans should pursue and lobby the government about.

The people we should be sympathetic about are the victim who was murdered and his family who are grieving his loss.
That teenager should not have had a weapon in the band; no weapon at all on him.
I hope his family realize the atrocious crime he committed, stabbing the man and taking his life. He deprived the man of his life. If he was a nice person and had any love in his heart, he would not have as much as considered stabbing him. He is a wicked teenager.
This crime is punishable. It is capital punishment for life. If anyone takes a life, this is what they should get, imprisonment for life. They should never be allowed to walk the streets again.

Sad to say but many of these young people have not/did not develop a conscience, therefore to them killing and serving time means nothing. We really have to be concerned as a society when this happens. I am doing my bit, as I work among young people, cognizant of the fact that I can’t save the world but if each adult commits to reaching out to a young person, we would at least have tried.

We as a society have failed our boys. Too many grow up fatherless and with no positive MALE role models. I have a son and whenever I hear of these sad incidents I put myself in the juvenile’ s mother position and I know it cant be easy. Sorry son we have failed you so terribly. i pray for you and your victims family. let us all use this as an example and pray for our children and the men of Dominica.

    • The Facts

He probably is a disobedient teenager and the mother has no control of him. If he loved his parent(s), he would have thought twice before stabbing the man. The fact he had a weapon, should indicate that he is a bad boy. He was out for trouble. His life to this point should be exposed for everyone to know. Only a bad teenager could do such a thing.

    • A Doubting Thomas
      February 21, 2015

This is a too easy and too convenient saying. There are countless children brought up by single parents who excel in school and career and do not commit crimes. There are those being brought up by both parents and still commit crimes and do not excel. And the reverse is also true for both groups.

This is a global problem that is being carried all over. We have to find the reason for that problem and small islands cannot do it alone it has to be done globally and no one should want it happening in their country. No parent want to know that their child is a victim of a crime or the perpetrator of a crime labeling it as children of single parent is refusing to see the bigger problem.

I do not have the answer but I am sure the answer is there somewhere and we have to find it before all our youths are destroyed and when our youths are destroyed our society is destroyed. Many of us reading this, difficult as it maybe, were brought up by a single parent or are single parents.

If you did a crime that’s expected of an adult, you have portrayed yourself as an adult, so in my opinion you should be tried as an adult, the severeness and nature of this case don’t deserve any preferential treatment, you did a fatal crime, expect to face the consequences.

This year Carnival was a real eye opener for me. I am afraid for this upcoming generation and the future of Dominica. I saw little boys under the age of 20 with big chains and bikes riding up and down…smoking marijuana even selling it and cocaine too while the older ones encourage them and that gangster behaviour… that vyey neg behaviour needs to go. And what that is more upsetting is the fact that this is what our young girls like. These girls adore those fellas so much its sickening. What is so appealing about a man who pulls up on a block 24/7 talking s and doing absolutely nothing? Another thing which irritated me so much is the way our young girls dress…makeup, lashes, nails, weave long like horse hair. When I was their age I could never be caught wearing those clothes let alone be in jouvert at that age! But times have changed!!! I really feel sorry for those parents who can’t do anything but watch their children waste their life just for big up on Facebook and…

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well our Officers made an arrest in this vicious Murder where they arrested a seventeen year old male. This young man shouldn’t be treated as a juvenile because he committed Murder in the second degree which is a very serious crime. He should be tried and if convicted he should be incarcerated in a Juvenile facility until he turn twenty one then he should be placed with the adult prisoners. I hope this male isn’t release on bail and he remain incarcerated until his trial. Mr Blackmoore I hope you pay attention to this case and used it as a reason to change the Bond Act. I feel sadden by this senseless lost of life therefore our Criminal Justice System must hold this young criminal responsible for his action. Rest in Peace Mr Mitchel.

As it is stated in the Old Testament, “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” Some parents are in need of good parenting.

You so right…. if that little boy knew he would be facing death if you kill someone you think he would do that. The same goes for all those murderers out there. If they knew that the death penalty was being swiftly enforced we would be seeing less and less of these crimes!!

Dominica is adopting the American style, he is a juvenile his name cannot be made public. He should have thought about that before he get dress pic k up the weapon stuff it in his pocket or wherever walk or ride to town and look for his target. Juveniles enjoy themselves not look to commit murder.
It’s time the judicial system start making an example of these young criminals. When you are a menace to society you need to be expunged from other civilians.

    • The Facts
      February 19, 2015

Canadian style too. I would think because their names are not published they are encouraged.
Two teenaged girls are facing a Court case. They trespassed on school property. The police was called and they beat up on the police. Some people took the picture and it went viral. If you go on Face Book you might see it.
Another two 12 year old teenaged girls are also facing the Court. They beat up on a teenager to the point of almost murdering her. They are charged for attempted murder.
Some months ago, in the evening, a 14 year old boy and his 12 year old girlfriend, held up a woman who had a baby in her arms. She was coming from work. They tried to kidnap the baby. They took her purse. They were caught.
We ask, what is happening to those children? Today, some are worst than ever. Some are also prostitutes.
The government and the schools should pay close attention and try to do something since some parents are not good at parenting and some children are disobedient.

Let us wait to hear the evidence, if we hear it because they claim he is a minor; not minor enough to stab and kill someone.
There were witnesses. They will, hopefully, give evidence. Nevertheless, a stabbing is a stabbing and a murder is a murder. The man died from the wombs inflicted from the stabbing. This is murder.

Many aspects of Dominica’s Carnival is not child or family friendly. Shouldnt street jump up be solely for grown adults as the environment there isnt one for children or young teens.
Maybe there should be other events for younger people that is more of a pleasant safe area for enjoying themselves.
I think more maybe it is time to make an example of these people who do crime to hinder others from repeating it.
I think the police dept are doing the best they can… But Too oftem, almost, it is the same crap where young kids are out in the crowds stabbing each other.
Cant kids be kids? What are we doing to create safer, more productive places for them?
Do we have them grow up in harsh environments and expect them to turn out right?

I suppose the police department did not consider to limit Carnival bands to only those who pass the age of limit and those who are underage should be accompanied by an adult. Let us hope this is considered for next year’s Carnival and thereon.
According to D/ca’s Law, this man was 17 years. He passed the age of limit which is why his name should be published and his photo shown.

I am in agreement with you, happens all the time….the “juvenile” who fatally stabbed a young man of Chance Portsmouth in June 2014 with a scissors, is out on the streets being merry. What a system, eh!

If he is guilty, I hope they do not say he is too young to get the punishment he deserves, he took a life, he was not too young to stab the person’s child, he should get the most severe punishment that there is, “thou shall not kill”, so let them stop saying that he is a juvenile, juveniles know the difference between right and wrong.
