Thieves target UK visitors at Woodfordhill Beach

The Woodfordhill Beach
The Woodfordhill Beach

Two visitors from the United Kingdom were forced to leave Dominica without their expensive camera equipment after it was stolen at the Woodfordhill Beach on Saturday.

Thieves broke into the couple’s vehicle and took a camera lens, worth EC$3,000, and EC$1,000 in cash, Police PRO Inspector John Carbon, told DNO.

He said the perpetrators removed the rear window of the couple’s rented jeep to commit the crime.

The visitors have since left Dominica and Inspector Carbon said there are no indications whether they will be returning to the island.

Police are investigating the incident.

Just last month a safety sign was installed at the Woodfordhill Beach by the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs and Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) in collaboration with the National Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (NCCU) in a “concerted effort to create visitor safety.”

i do not think it will be long before the home office in the UK start to put a warning on tourist coming to Dominica, what with the french couple and there daughter who where brutally attacked the death of the irish guy and the non stop attack of ex pats some of them brutal.
Beware Dominica the last thing you want is for tourist to stop coming and investors to feel it is too much of a risk, whcih includes the Unis in Dom, they will yank there staff and students out of the country if it starts to get any worse, which is so so sad.

We need two or three police officers posted daily on the popular beaches so that the tourists are kept safe and feel safe as well. It is time for this to stop!!

Please Please Government put police on the beach and other attractions eg in Roseau central.
D/ca cannot afford to lose tourist we have very few as it is in comparison to other islands.
Barbados has nipped it in the bud they are policing the at risk areas. The lazy police who sit around or chase woman let them work for their two pennies worth.
minister of tourism instead of wasting time protesting get on your bike and be seen to be doing something
The dam fools who are commiting these crimes must be brainless.
These items will be sold and they will still be hungry the next day find something constructive to do with your life

Not very good news for an Island which is trying to encourage tourism which is desperately needed. I know that Antigua Trinidad Barbados and quite a few others are far worst however we need tourists to feel that DA is the safest in the Caribbean. Officials PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!!

I am sorry for what happened to them. We are warning those government officials involved in tourism, if these thefts and other crimes do not cease Dominica will financially lose.
Bad news travel faster than good ones. Those visitors will obviously inform their travel agency about it. Dominica will not be on their list of safe countries.
There should be police patrol or even undercover security guards in those areas. Please be serious and do something about it.
I hope the police catch those thieves. If caught, no bail for them. Who knows? They may be either out on bail or were deported from overseas.
Thieves, you who have no love and conscience, and do not care that your own country Dominica gets a bad reputation because of your evil heart and action, God knows who you are. One day you will suffer immensely for the hurt and pain you cause others, stealing the property of our Dominican visitors. You disgraceful creature, God and time will take care of you and soon enough.

Well Skerro just gave 8million $ to Liat hoping to improve air access to D A, instead we are seeing the worst that has ever been in the history of air service to D A,
With continuous crime against tourist already we are in the top 25 least visited countries of the world, can you see what is happening to us? we need to re structure the education system, to teach Morales and values,Civic responsibilities, constitution and the law, so that we can rebuild a responsible society.

Morals and values are learned at home. There are too many people having and raising children that have no business raising them as they have no values or morals. Instant gratification is their motto.

I wish to repeat that we need to have proper access to he beaches, employ beach cleaners and not long ago Skerit said he employed 12 special constables to assist in the protection of such touristic areas, where are those constables, the number of police men that have where are hey posted during duty time, well hings getting tough and crime is on the rise, is what next?

There are so many police officers walking in pairs in Roseau and yet none policing the areas where the crimes against tourists are taking place. I guess it will take a murder before the police get their act together and of course, at that point it will be too late. Too late for the victim, too late for the island’s reputation and too late to save tourism – what little we have.

i think the cops in the out districts need to be changed regularly so they do not become too comfortable some of them stay in their stations whole day playing dominoes, cards etc and do not even visit the villages they are to care for. When u do see them is in a rum shop. This is what the Chief should look at. People report crimes and they do not even say let us dress in our uniforms and do some patrols on a weekend so people can see there is a police presence in their villages.

non of the previous opinions made mention of employment. If these thieves were engaged in something constructive, do you think that they would have time to lie in wait and steal from the tourist?
When it is difficult for people to make money legally, they will try to make it illegal. I am afraid police patrol may only made the thieves “step-up their game” by arming themselves and being more sophisticated.
I do not know about u but i see this crime wave as Dominica crying for help. Our people need to inspired through action because action apeaks louder than words.let “us” stop making promises of jobs and investemts. To Doiminicans it’s like i have heard it all before.JUST DO IT!yeah, just do it…..damn it.

why everything has to be blamed on other people? Why can’t people be responsible for the own actions? The eleven year old that previously stole the tourist property…What about that? maybe he should find a job. What do you think

    • cd
      September 3, 2013

Dude that is hogwash. Create employment for yourself. Dominica has land farrow doing nothing. Farming can feed you and make you money… People always need food. Why not farm? How come Hatians Can come here with no employment, farm and sell produce and you don’t hear them robbing people… Lame excuse! Throw the book at them. I am self employed… Created a job for myself! So they need to be punished to the full extent of the law and people like you need to stop defending their irresponsibility.

We need to face reality thieves are all over, what we need is more security, police patrol more frequent on the beaches. We are trying to be tourism friendly we have to be prepared and don’t let our visitors encounter bad experience of our beautiful country. Dominica is an island like everyplace in the world where things happen. To the thieves stop the bad habits, lets create a lasting good impression for our country.

Woy! Woy! Woy! Attack on tourist again! If it isn’t us it is the tourists. Who is sleeping? Is it the PM, the Minister of National Security, or the police? Who is to blame? These wicked shameful useless, senseless, all-kinds-of-negatives-to-describe-it acts in the Calibishie, Woodfordhill, North East area has been on the rise for more than ten repeat ten (10) years now and absolutely nothing is being done about it; not by the police nor the other government authorities or personnel. Some of it has even come to the streets of Roseau. If it isn’t security, it is unreliable transportation to this blessed country destroying our tourist product that a lot of the other countries wish they had. Seems like we Dominicans will have to take matters in our hands to protect what we have worked so very hard to attain and achieve. I see more work for a new working government.

well the main problem of Dominica are Dominicans…you express how pity it is that people get robbed etc etc but in reality its hypocrisy because you dont give a s### what is going on with your tourists. All you capable is type your comment and shout that its leaders fault…look you have fantastic island..but look on the areas where you live..you throw your garbage on coastal side (old fridges, washing machine), you drive and throw your empty KFC pack out of vehicle, you litter everywhere, you are rude to tourists and just visitors, you are aggressive…thats why your tourism is sooo badly f#### up NOT because your dont have international airport or somebody camera was stolen. Scums stole everywhere in London, Honolulu or Tokyo.. You tourism starts then somebody explains you that tourists in Dominica for good and you need to be polite. Adios!

I was a victim of crime, but like everyone is saying, the government or PM should put in a place a patrol system at peak times on beaches to prevent this. Dominica is such a beautiful island for people to give it a bad name. Soon there will be no tourist …and what will happen then!!! It don’t stop me from visiting but it will other people…PM needs ton wake up and stop sleeping on himself

My advice? cut the trees at least three hundred feet from the beaches. My protection? A WATERPROOF POW POW.

People must be crows you see. Erecting a sign alone scares no one. I am not crime expert, for all I know I might be speaking rubbish but here is my thoughts on the matter. All locations frequented by tourist should be allocated a police officer or two on duty, at least within the RECOMMENDED visiting time. I say recommended because that is what the signs can have posted, you do not have to say why but say for example beach open from 6 a.m to 8p.m during which time we have police presence. Be they on bicycles or what. Woodfordhill is one of if not the most beautiful beaches we have come on man! You see some will say I need to state that this is not only for sites frequented by tourists but lets be real, they are the prime targets. You do not really want to attack me, a fellow Dominican who may just happen to see you next day with my stuff, joke you making!

    • September 2, 2013

Great idea you brought up . Visiting time should be strictly adhered and there should be some form of police patrol on the beaches . Police in the U.S do patrol the parks and recreation areas and there are set times when people are allowed in those areas. Why can’t it be done in Dominica?

The Prime minister is more than sleeping…you cannot tell me the police them all over the place partying like old vagabond and always drunk and expect them to patrol areas. simple crimes that can more than be avoided if the officers of the law do their jobs instead of being dead drunk and driving in high speed with government vehicle. the officer of the Wesley and Marigot police station needs a wake up call. Fire their *** if they refuse to do the job. they covering up for each other and saying the law is in their hands. their family and all are the biggest drug dealers in the villages and they covering up. members of the public afraid to report those shit because they go back report to the drugs men so people fear for their lives.
