Tourist robbed in Roseau

robberyA female tourist was robbed on Independence Street in Roseau on Tuesday.

Reports are that the tourist was in the company of another individual (believed to be her husband) when she started shouting for help.

At the same time, a young man was seen running towards the St Martin’s Primary School.

DNO can confirm that the man got away with the tourist’s personal items.

The police were called to the scene.

But wat d father head nuh!!! :-? A joke dat man.

You know that these kind of people if caught will serve a very short time in El Hotel de Stockfarm and still come out plump and well rested. So I have a suggestion. Forget jail time, no need to pay any fines.

For three months straights, Monday to Saturday, in popular areas of Roseau they should put a HUGE placard around their neck covering their front and one on their back, stating their crime. Person should be allowed to ridicule them as they please.

Tourist season , Bayfront for them.

I still think that the crime rate in Dominica is low when it is compare to other countries in the region. But,these acts against visitors must be condemn. No time for bashing one another,we must understand that we as individuals must be concern.the tourist industry is vital to our development as a nation. An our government has to be cognizance and take a positive stance. In this industry our attitude must be harmonious with our behavior. So,Come ye forward, sons and daughters of this gem beyond compare.Strive for honour, sons and daughters.Do the right,be firm,be fair.Toil with hearts and hands and voices.we must prosper!Sound the call,in which everyone rejoices.”All for each and each for all”

I am saddened to hear that, hope the lady is ok. Tourism is so fragile. I still think D’a needs to keep focus on tourism but put renewed efforts and priority on being the king of Agricultural trading. This can produce a double effect, would also bring down the high cost of food locally too.

Here we go again.Fighting one another in our comments and ideologies.
People that won’t do it,Fighting one another will not bring about any change.
Have you all not heard a divided house can’t stand.
So while you’ll are there fighting amoungst yourselves the evil that you’ll can’t stand at the front door,is deep on the inside of the house, under the bed.
I tell you’ll fighting with each other will not do it.Leaving Dominica and going back to the U.S will not do it neither, you could go to Russia.
And jade that pitty talk(nous fini bat)won’t do it neither. When you say that the country is finish, words are powerful, that’s just what it will come down to
The answer is simple..Everyone on island need just come together, big, small, young, old, man, woman, bring your cats and dogs and sheep and goats and fowls, everyone is feeling it even the animals, and take to the streets daily, keep the pressure on the officials that can do something about it,and you’ll will see if it won’t change.
With that said,I hope you’ll folks will stop fighting amoungst yourselves and you guys on island will take the right actions, like I tell you’ll,and trust me,when you’ll do that things will happen.
    Don’t forget to pray.
    GOD BLESS

Here we go again thinking hard about what is happening. Crime is a business and it’s an epidemic in the western world. In a certain country 45%of crime are caused by repeat offenders they are arrested and would tell the police ill be out before you end your shift and that’s a fact. As you may know the police , lawyers judges all the way to the prison depends on the crime. It would take hard leadership to turn things around like putting the citizens first only then we may see a reduction in crime. (GOOD CITIZENS).

Honestly, this is not giving me any taste to visit my country on a vacation or to tell people about visiting. Very disappointed in the way things are going in Dominica. Bring back hanging and call it a day, start cutting their hands off when they steal like they do in some Middle East countries. They will run from the island!

Wow, bring back hanging for stealing a purse ? So the paradise that you live in I guess no one steals there are no murders and it is just all peace and love in the utopia. Stop it! We should all condemn crime but don’t act like Dominica is the worst place because some idiot snatched a purse.

      • March 6, 2013

For the very small population of Dominica there is FAR TOO MUCH crime, every day you can come up to DNO and read about shootings, robberies, beatings, crime crime crime. For an island of 70,000 people it is RIDICULOUS! All to often the crime is against a tourist,.. tourism is keeping your economy above water. The penalty in Dominica is not tough at all, I have read blogs where these ignorant criminals get whatever they want in jail anyways,.. including ganja, so where is the deterent?!? Pure Vacation Camp, pure joke. I am not saying cutting there hands off,.. but it is time to change the system up so it works. Make these dirtball criminals WORK their crime off,.. bring back the chain gang,.. get these criminals doing HARD WORK,. for $0 every day of their sentance,.. believe it when I say the crime will go DOWN DRASTICALLY,. these criminal minds will not do the crime if they know they will have to chain gain it, and do HARD LABOUR every day of their sentence. WAKE UP and realize the punishment for these crimes needs to change severely,. otherwise crime island will never stop. BRING BACK THE CHAIN GANG!

It’s time for the Government of Dominica to start installing camera on the streets of Dominica so we Dominican to feel a little safer.

    • March 6, 2013

The problem is the crime is happening everywhere, quite often in secluded locations,.. I can’t tell you how many crimes I have read about that happen at Batibou Bay in particular. Plus the government of Dominica surely does not have the funds available for these camera’s.

This type of crime against visitors, appear to be on the rise in the Eastern Caribbean, and needs to be effectively addressed by Caricom, before we loose yet another valuable industry. Today the police in one Caricom country issued an advisory to its citizens not to wear jewellery in public, because of the rising Cash for Gold crime wave, which is not only affecting locals, but visitors as well.

If harsher punishment is a deterrent why critics of the death penalty are against it being use as punishment for murder. In the same breath therefore i don’t think increasing the penalty will solve the problem. i think public education and greater supervision of places of interest by local security personnel, the police together with the general public is the solution. We as a population have to love the tourism industry enough to make it work and save it from these obviously unemployed predators.

i agree…police officers in plain clothing should be around in times like these when tourist are around…it’s not like they have anything to do….they just sit down in the police stations

they don’t all sit in police stations. some of them walk around doing…nothing

    • Annon
      March 5, 2013

Great deterrent against such, also no visible patrols when large numbers of tourists are present. That would be ‘too easy’ to protect the tourist industry. They don’t even show up at the water front when ships are in, paros and thieves know that….just try to park illegally or smoke marijuana in town and see how fast they on you, so dream on.

We need more police officers on the streets of roseau , when the ships are in, the officer has no radio communication in this mordern age , no peper spray, taser, baton, it is a joke,no wonder the bad guys are winning, the police chief should up grade the force and give the officers the correct tools to do there job.

THERE SHOULD BE A REFRESHER COURSE EVERY THREE MONTHS , AT THE SHOOTING RANGE FORE ALL OFFICERS. BE

  28. Jaime Lewis
    March 5, 2013

We need increased police presence. What about a Junior Cadet to assist the police? Young people could join from age 18-21 for about 2 years, receive training in law enforcement and other skills and a small stipend. Part of their practical experience would be street patrol with an experienced policeman. Have a 2-man team on every block. This could serve as an employment track, keep them off the streets for some time and some sense of community.
We need some creative ideas for combatting crime in Dominica.

Then move back to NY!! as if NY have less crime and bowdell than Dominica. Sometimes you all weaken your arguments with these ignorant comments. With all the security cameras around, and cops all over the place, on feet patrol, in marked and unmarked vehicles, with all types of high tech surveillance, crime is still rampant in NY and throughout the US.. as if you don’t know that.

Anyways I support more policing. Tourist are leaving those kinds of environments behind for a few moments of tranquility and to have these lowlives attacking them, will further choke the industry that is already on life support.

Yes CCTV is needed. We all know that tourism brings job, and much needed monies.

As for returning back to NY after five years, who are you kidding. Do you really think that you are safer in NY than in Dominica. I returned to DA 3 years ago and will not even start to compare living in DA to living in London. The longer I stay in DA the more I know I made the right decision.

Hope the victim was able to give a good description of the robber, and that she is OK.

The stiffest penalty in DA is weed. That is such a sorry state. Weed is a weed. Stealing, robbing, killing, rape, etc. is a real crime, but punishment is leaner than a little weed. When is DA going to go after real criminals????
