Trafalgar woman on gun-related charges, gets bail

CourtfineA Trafalgar woman, who appeared before a Roseau magistrate on several gun-related and ammunition charges, was granted bail on Monday.

Anelta St. Jeans received bail in the sum of $30,000 with her son in law, Shawn Savarin standing as surety.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Claude Weekes, did not object to bail.

St. Jean, 55, was arrested along with her son, Wendell Bertrand, last week after a search warrant was executed on their premises and a high-powered gun, an AR 15, was reportedly found.

She faces up to five different charges with at least one being indictable to be tried by a judge and jury. It carries a maximum of 15 years behind bars.

As part of her bail conditions she is to surrender all her travel documents to law enforcement authorities, report twice weekly to the Roseau police station, be of good behavior, not to interfere with witnesses and inform police of any change of address.

The matter is set for October 7, 2013.

Her son was also granted bail.

They are both represented by attorney, Wayne Norde.

DNo do not have the facts straight….the gun was not found in her house…it was found in an open shed that was away from her house and so the police decided to assume its her premises…She was not even home when the search initially began, she came during the execution.
People who know the lady and her son know that they are not criminals and are quiet people who are hard working…so do not judge one based unfounded biasness or on assumption. They have not found guilty and should be treated as innocent until the court said otherwise. It just shows what an unjust society we live in and trouble follows whereever

these guns are not granted a license to citizens by the state..only law enforcement agencies are permitted to carry and use them. in cases probly the known gun trainers could earn one for practicing purposes or high powered individuals.. but thats about it.. this gun has some trail marks behind it and must be investigated leading way back to the country/countries it may have passed through.. the public need answers

Again, Dominica. You must get strict on these gun related crimes. I don’t care if its a mother or not. She knows better. With guns comes serious violence, Drugs and more corruption. If you don’t stop this, you will be prisoners in your own country. Act now! It’s serious. Give them the toughest penalties. Control it while you can or else you be sorry.

The gun was in her house. How could she not have known about it especially if it is not a big house? Hope this is a lesson to her. Teach your children well, to be law-abiding and they will not get into trouble and have a criminal record in addition to hauling you down with them for what goes around comes around.

Let us ry to be a little more sensible. What does the gun issue have to do with councillors and cleaning of drains? Can we debate an issue without adulterating it with something else?

A jail sentence is sure if there is to be law and order in Dominica. First, he/she probably had no license for the firearm and that warrants prison time; lawyer or not.

She doesn’t clean her house like my mother. Mama used to clean from top to bottom. If there is anything illegal she will surely find it. For us to hide something, it had to be hidden in the zakasia, otherwise, Mama will get it.

I respectfully disagree! It COULD NOT have happened with my mother. My parents raised four of us and we knew better. We “didn’t have house” so nothing was private. Talk about random surprised searches of bedroom, school-bag, closet, everything. Plus – the message was clear: If you want to do what you want, get out … go on street – that house doh have big man and big woman. I suspect a lot of parents allow their kids to do what they want when they small and when they get older and start to terrorize them, is then (or sometimes then) they expect sympathy. Well, some sympathies I just can’t give.

I know lawyers are there to protect their client, good or bad. But as we know in Dominica, everyone is related one way or the other. These lawyers are getting paid for a job. They should realize, sooner or later, if crimes are not dealt with seriously, it will affect them or their families.

I am saddened by the lost of freedom we are going to have in Dominica, by protecting these criminals. Criminals don’t care about no one except themselves. They have made up their minds to just do what they want, and get what they want no matter WHAT. If the Government and the courts don’t make serious examples of these criminals, they will be running the country. A STICH IN TIME SAVES NINE. A OUNCE OF PREVENTION, IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE. SERIOUSLY!!!!

DOMINICA is a small Island, please give me a brake. Most of us know exactly what is going on in constructive and negative things. The problem is that, we like to hide what’s going on. We suppose to look out for each other, positively. Sooner or later it will blow up in our faces, pay the consequences for not talking out.

If u see something, say something. We are scared to talk now, but if that’s the way Dominica is going, we will not be able to go anywhere without being scared of getting hurt. The same people we are trying to protect by not saying anything, the might turn on us, or will not be able to protect us. This is not a joke. When someone pulls a trigger. it has no eyes and will hit even the innocent.

Dominica, stop being copy cats of other ruthless countries. All I know if these guns are used for illegal activities, when the deals go wrong, the innocent will pay for the guilty with their lives.
Guns, Drugs and Death goes hand in hand. Speak Out Dominicans. Our future is in serious danger.

Well we have the crime hotline to call I hope we use it and as for the woman -if is her child/children putting her through this the woe be unto them.

But you know when children want to give their lives to Jesus parents stop them and then these same children choose these violent paths that the parents themselves pay for. Some parents encourage their children to be in all kinds of nonsense early in life rather than teach them or encourage them to follow God.

So when things like this happen, I am sorry, but a look at a family’s background can tell you the reason for certain misfortune. Let us just pray for the family and hope for the best for Miss St Jean. If she is indeed innocent I hope that the guilty party is caught soon and made to pay.

You now have Crime Stoppers where you can report crimes anonymously and get paid for it. If you do not exercise this duty, you are aiding, abetting, encouraging crimes and causing it to flourish. What is worst, in the eyes of God it is a sin. Our Lord said: “Those who know and do nothing, it is a sin.” Some of you do not know your obligation and rights as nationals and also to God. Read the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

Many parents are aware but they choose not to address it. Then they end paying the price for it, even though they are not the culprits.
As long as a child, no matter their age, leaves in a parents home, that parent have to know what is in their house. If it is illegal, they have to address it. They would be doing both the child and themselves a good thing.
