Two arrested in Batibou Beach robbery

Batibou Beach
Batibou Beach

Two men of Calibishie have been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery of a honeymooning couple from Texas at Batibou Beach.

They have been identified by police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, as Raymondson Thomas and Junior George.

The couple was robbed while taking a bath at the beach with another couple. They were on their way to the airport to pick up a friend when they decided to stop for a dip.

A number of items were stolen including wallets with several credit cards, a document which the husband needed to re-enter the US, their personal papers and driver’s licenses, about EC$200 and US$400, the woman’s platinum wedding ring valued at over US$2000, cell phones, and the backpack with all the victims’ clothing.

Most of the items including the wedding ring and travel documents, were recovered.

In a blog post on DNO the couple, who left Dominica on Sunday, thanked the police for investigating the robbery and making the arrests.

They say they hope to return one day to Dominica “with a fresh start.”

They also thanked DNO for publishing the story and all the comments posted. The story generated close to 200 comments.

“It took our minds off of the situation for moments while we were attempting to make a recovery of our items,” the couple wrote. “We are now HAPPY HONEYMOONERS again, leaving the island with a sense of resolve and peace. Thank you, Dominica!!!!!!”

I am disheartened to write this to all Dominicans that were so happy to hear our items were recovered after we were robbed in July. Yes, we are the honeymoon couple that left Dominica with a sense of peace after that frustrating ordeal! My husband and I were told that we could not take our items (including my ring) when we left Dominica, as the police needed the items as evidence for the case against the suspects (which by the way were only fined with a slap on the hand!) We were reluctant to leave the items (especially my ring), but was reassured that everything would be mailed the following week to the U.S. I was anxious to have my ring on my finger again, but once we received the package my ring was not there. Yes, thieves targeted us AGAIN (third time)!!!!! This time we weren’t even in Dominica! Everything was in the box except that ring, (the only item that we cared about)! There was negligence on the part of the Dominican police and the company they asked to ship it. Right now it’s a “he said, she said” as to what happened before and during shipment to the States. First of all, why would anyone ship a ring the way the police did? Come on????????? I thought people there on the island would want to know that our nightmare has not ended due to greedy, dishonest people that saw an opportunity to take from others. At this point, we are unsure where the ring was stolen but authorities and the shipper are aggressively investigating our case. We are devastated by this, yet once again!!!!

I am happy that these people got there stuff back. time for better security on batibou. the government needs to work with the douglas family to ensure better security on that beach. some tourist still don’t go there with a tour guide even if they are told the beach is very secluded

The police got on this because it affected the tourist industry. This incident will still affect the tourist industry. Now what is the reason that the police do not do their duty when it comes to the people living in DA? Crime all over the place and no police around. Commissioner, why is this?

      July 30, 2013

You are such a MORAN. Did you not read that they left DA happy and will return?. While crime is everywhere the result is what makes people return, and in their case the crime was solved. What needs to happen now is that the Court sends a very strong message to would be criminals…Thumbs up to the police department for getting these hoodlums of the streets.

I am relieved it ended with the return of the stolen items. Well done Police! Full punishment as these crimes affects he entire country and nationals and future visitors. These days we do not want to mention HARD LABOUR, but we need to ensure their time spent in prison is done with Hard Labour, not an easy time as seems to be the norm.

Keep them busy doing work. If it is community work, they must wear special yellow jackets with the words: Prison work programme, so the public will be aware as sometimes we do not even know who is prisoner from who is law abiding citizen, working on the road. Criminals must be punished, not pampered. Zero tolerance!

    July 29, 2013

I think ministry of tourism should consider security in these secluded tourist sites. Batibou is a very nice beach but every time I sit and think how isolated the area is, I always think twice about going there.

Cut back on some of these office workers at a Discover Dominica that really do nothing to enhance the tourist experience and put the resources to better use. Getting security in these areas would be such a relief. Security from 7 to 7 and close the beach when there is no security. We need to find ways to really ensure our visitors as well as locals enjoy these facilities safely.

Pleased to know that the majority of their articles were found. I visualize it was no easy time for them when they realized their valuable items were stolen. What anguish they experienced.
At least they returned to their homeland feeling better after the thieves were caught and most of the items were retrieved. It is an experience they will never forget.
Thank you to the Police for excellent investigation and in arresting them. A job well done.
Thank you to DNO for posting the article, giving Dominicans near and far, an opportunity to comment, majority of whom compassionately and positively commented in favor of the victims. The comments indicated to them that there are many good people in DA.
Pleased to know that they projected no animosity for Dominica. As they stated, someday they will return. I hope by then there will be a decrease in criminal activities.

Give them Credit for nabbing the thieves. But what did they do with the ring they recovered from the thieves? The couple did not receive that ring in the package they said they shipped. 57. My take
    July 29, 2013

It is a relief to see that the perpetrators have been apprehended. Let them be tried and let justice prevail, not just a slap on the wrist for them to be out and about in a short space of time, back to the same old game.

I, for one, maintain that signs should be posted on approach to and on the site warning folks of the danger that lurks there. This is for us as Dominicans and for visitors too.

It is cases like this, one time too many, that serves to give Dominica a bad name. Bad news spreads like wild fire.

Let us keep Dominica safe for us all. It is everybody’s business.

It appears that this is a popular beach stop and so some sort of surveillance should be ongoing

Hope the couple gives DA a second chance.

Rose, We love Dominica and we are pleased with the outcome to date. We lost valuable time with a friend’s visit to Dominica to deal with this situation. It was her first time to the island and the activities we had planned took a backseat once this incident occurred.
We believe in allowing the judicial system to do their job, but the young people of Dominica should find alternative measures of making money besides robbing tourists of time, money and enjoyment of this beautiful Nature Isle. We made many friends during our stay this time and look forward to re-connecting with everyone we met.

Situations like this is what is hurting our economy. Even if they left here happy, the damage has already been done. They will forever remember this unfortunate situation and may even tell their friends about it. I think, when these guys go to Prison, they must be sentence to HARD labor. Send them to cut grass on the side of the road in the hot sun. Instead, they have to rub, beat or attempt murder on us,sometimes in our own homes, and then we have to pay tax to fatten them. Ca pais rite at all… :(
