Australian media man stumbled into a Roseau bar bleeding from the nose and forehead

A member of the Australian media was attacked in Roseau on Saturday night. He was in Dominica covering the Test match between Australia and the West indies which ended on Friday.

The man told Dominica News Online (DNO) that he was attacked by two men on Old Street. He said the men approached him and asked for money. When he refused, they attacked him and took his wallet containing credit cards, drivers license and about 300 EC in cash.

The man stumbled to a local restaurant/bar bleeding from the nose and left side of his forehead. The Australian doctor with Aussie team arrived at the bar shortly afterwards.

The man, who is staying at the Flamboyant Hotel in Roseau, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A member of the Australian entourage told DNO that this was the second robbery of an Australian in Roseau on Saturday night. He said an Australian cricket fan was earlier robbed and a gun was threatened to be used.

Alas Papa; look at the posts many of us are writing for the world to see. Some of us seem so happy that this incident have taken place on our soil. The bad politics some of us have adopted have really messed with some of our brains. We do not even care if it would have a negative impact on us.

Thank God the victims see it as random attacks and not how a whole country of people behave. I hope they do not read DNO, I feel very ashamed at some comments but again they are sensible people and would see it as bad politics at play. I am very sorry they were attacked and wish it had never happened on our beautiful Nature Isle.

Whether we live on island or away, when we choose to show our country in a bad light it is Dominica and Dominicans we are doing it too and not any other country. When you close your doors at night in your own home, think of it as Dominica and how you would protect it and those within the four walls. That is how Dominicans should always feel about DA.

On behalf of our well mannered people of Dominica, I extend an apology to the visiting Australian Cricketers–especially the two victims—Lizavier4Jesus

Then the Elizabeth, start babbling about repentance, what does the nation repentance have to do with thieves embarrassing our people and country? –Francisco Etienne

Man the day you stop reading upside down or back to front, will be the day you come to know how stupid you are–that should also be the day you regret you had spoken or written about things that you did not understand. Until then keep on making a great full of yourself, greater and greater than the time before.

What is wrong, may I ask, about extending an apology, on behalf of fellow Dominicans, to the victims of those lazy and mischievous dead conscience individuals like you, who live at home?

If you think that the victims don’t deserve an apology, well I do, along with the 22 others at this point, who agree with me. So just short up, eh!

For all those of you blinded by politics and do not want to hear the truth, if our justice system did not continuously fail us, our crime rate would be much lower. Dominica has a tiny population. Crime should be easier to control than countries like Jamaica. Instead, we give these imbeciles a slap on the wrist and allow them to become repeat offenders. We have politicians intervening on their behalf after their parents run to them crying. We need to punish these criminals so as to deter them. Thank God for G.O.N. Emanuel. At least for a minute, the country was nice.

Keep in mind their attorneys plead with the judge/magistrate that they are a first-time offender and they did not waste the Court’s time. Foolish plea if you ask me which do not warrant leniency and a reduced sentence.

Skerrit is always prepared to send military to areas he don’t like whenever they talk for their rights. There should have been police presence in the streets since a test match had been taking place. Everyone knows that there would be tourists walking the streets of Roseau, therefore there should be tight security in the streets of Roseau. Shame

We tell our kids go and study when they come back they will not be able to manage a 30 room Hotel in portsmouth. The money is in Africa is any one getting Educated to build city’s in Africa. We say we are not Africans ? Why do we drive Japanese cars? Why dont we drive Dominican cars. Every kid going to Grambling state is going to come back worst than they left. The subject they are taking will not be able to draw the city of Roseau. All the big jobs of $2.1 million doing the blue print of Roseau will go to Barbados. Why do we go to college . The state college make it a for yrs. Change the British model, teach our kids to build city’s, factories, food supply, ships, and every thing we need to service export our people to help build Africa and make money to help build the Black world. 18. June 7, 2015

This is an unfortunate situation . Innocent people who came to enjoy cricket and the beauty of our advertised ‘ isle of beauty with loving and friendly people ‘, now has to denounce this advertisement . My problem also is the law and penalties for these perpetrators ( 6 months – 2 years imprisonment ) and they’re out again destroying the good name of our country and affecting an already extremely shaky tourism industry . Sign of desperation . God save our country .

When I come back on line 10 percent politics , and 90 percent solving our problems. Our Leaders cannot follow us if we dont know what we want . A good leader delivers when you have an educated public who demands leadership. If the country is number four in the world with Drunkards then you get what you d erserve bad Leadership on both sides. If you listen to Dominicans and the rest of the caribean leaders will always take advantage of them, every body had a bad British Education, every body just talk and make noise and the leaders know it. Get educated again quick and be successful and face facts and talk the truth like me , I love you a lot you may not think so , my heart is in your hart I want change for you and a good life dont challenge any thing that I say embrace progress. You dont question the world bank so dont question me just do what I say it works you dont have more time. Stop b lamming Government bad Education caused your problem. Tell Skerritt fix it now

In the international press, especially in Australia when that is publicize, Dominicans will gain an excellent reputation. The criminals cannot use his drivers license, they cannot use his credit cards unless they know his password, or his pin number.

So, for a meager three ($300.000) hundred Dominica dollars totaling approximately one US$111.00 dollars, and far less than a hundred Australian Dollars, they attack the man injuring him.

Then the Elizabeth, start babbling about repentance, what does the nation repentance have to do with thieves embarrassing our people and country? These criminals if caught should get fifty years in jail, that is the only we will rid Dominica of crimes, and the embarrassing they are causing the rest of us!

There is no one talking about the bigger problems, why are we behaving like people with no Brains, we spend most of our lives doing nothing. All other Races have think tanks where men and women get together to solve their country’s problems. The British set up the University of the Westindes in 1952 there is not one person in the entire Caribean that the British taught to solve any thing. All we learn in school is how to quote great people of Europe. We cannot even put water in a bottle and sell it. The world bank and the I.m.f have to tell us what to do. If you dont change the way we educate our selves we will be professional beggers for life. By the conversion on this site , they did not teach us nothing at the university. How many Black people in the caribean that employs100- people, we just talk, where is change

The problem is we accept Black degenerates amoung us. It has nothing to do with U.W. P. Or Labour we are not very good when it comes to talking the truth or accepting responsibility when it comes to one of our own. We apologize for rong doing when it happens to other people. If you listen to every body its so sad what happens to these people people we should have the same reaction when it happens to us. Like rape we are doing nothing I hope strangers dont get rape in our country. Stop it before you get into areas you cannot handle. Criminals should not be allowed to walk free amoungs us . All the drug dealers supplying the drugs to your kids you say they have no jobs are lazy people that will stop at nothing until they distroy the country. They will stop at nothing until they achieve their gold. Hunt them down

Hello and good morning my people. It’s very sad reading obout such vicious robbery and assault in sweet Dominica. Dominica is full of too much potential. I always boast that when I am in Dominica that money is sure, and if i do not have it there is no need to stress because we are not like so many other countries where money is that big of an issue. You can still do a little work on a man farm and get something to eat in return plus a $20 . I know most of us don’t want that but it is an honest day’s work. There are still so much that we can do that we are not doing to grab the tourists’ dollar, and I am not talking about stealing, we lack imagination and vision. We follow other islands although our product is unique. these guys may have gotten more than $300 XCD from these guys if perhaps they had a product/service that they could market to them. Uneducated people will most likely make poor choices.Sad thing is that I hardly ever hear these guys being caught and sentenced.

After the British left you never had a plan to educate and feed your self. I was in Grand Bay last week beautiful place with good land doing nothing. There is absolutely no reason why Grand Bay people should be begging g for bath rooms and roads. Grand Bay alone can provide the whole country with chicken, pineapple , plantains, yams, and fish. They can even put a pineapple factory to produce juice, what about bottle water. Laplane land idel people begging Government for every thing, what about planting high value products like vanilla , cocoa, coffee, bottle water, Bayrum, all kind of wines like ginger wine the french likes it, cottage pigs, water, M arigot wesley bread basket can grow every thing , our kids like apple and grapes plant it to dont forget bottle water. With the brains we would have full employment in every village we dont have to go to Roseau yt? Yet again we see this madness going on. I have always said and will keep saying, “we only will beginning to cry when it hit closer to home.” This is unacceptable, and every citizen of Dominica should work to protect our streets. We should become better stewardess of our communities in order to irradiate these types of criminal behavior. We need to work closer with the police to catch these perpetrators of these crimes and bring them to justice. The people in the community who are buying the stollen property from those criminals are just as guilty, the mothers, fathers, neighbors who know and see something is out of place and remain silent are just as guilty.

When there is a crack down by the police and security forces on these vagabonds and hooligans, I hope that we will not start crying down the police for trying to protect Dominica and Dominican citizens. I hope that the leaders can put aside their political differences and make a joint statement on this matter.

    Enough I…

  36. June 7, 2015

Doc love and the rest who are using this situation to spin their political crap, just a reminder if things were better these scum bags would have done the same things because they are criminals. • Titiwi
      June 7, 2015

Maybe not Point but I can assure you that under a new “Team Dominica” govt. there would be more police presence on the streets of Roseau, particularly at nights and especially on the occasion of an international cricket match. Foreigners reading this are not interested in local mwpi, they are interested in safety and security when they visit us.

      • June 8, 2015

@titiwi, could you tell us why street crmes still continue to happen in London, NY, Paris, Brazil, other Caribbean countries, the list is long it is a global issue. In many of these countries you see a heavy police presence on the streets and crime still happens. We cannot solve our social problems when we continue to examine them with politically tinted lenses. It would be outrageous to say that Team Dominica or UWP which ever name you choose, is behind these criminal acts. However the way it is been used to push the agenda of Team Dominica/UWP begs many questions.

    • Peter Potter
      June 7, 2015

No, that is not what he is saying. What he is saying is that a government (DLP) that turns it’s citizens into beggars is responsible for their behaviour. Furthermore, a government (DLP) and it’s leader that clearly states on numerous occations that they are above the law and practice it as well, what do you think ordinary citizens will do. This government has been poison to this country since 2000 and slowly that poison is trickling through the ranks now. We only get order back if this government goes!!!

      • The Real Facts
        June 7, 2015

Some of you make some foolish comments. When will you comprehend that those who are in need of financial help, the government is obligated to assist them?
All non-West Indian countries provide financial benefit for those who are unemployed. We do not call them beggars.
It is ignorant, low and insulting to state that those who accept this help from the government are beggars and that the government is making D/ca a beggar state.
If you have an idea how to administer it and to whom, then you should suggest it, respectfully, to your government in writing.
Talking, writing and criticizing are insufficient to help the situation in Dominica. Action is necessary. Do something about it!
Tell those who receive the small monthly income, there is no reason that they should steal from others and harm them.
You have an obligation to your country and nationals. Make the most of it and of your time.
All you critics, be good, genuinely concerned nationals and Samaritans.

Certain top ranking officials can get away with white collar crimes because of their political affiliations, not a dog bark, therefore, some Dominicans believe, they too, can do the same, not realizing they are hurting the country. It is alleged, a top ranking public servant , very close to the Government, has on his bank account over a million dollars, which he has not been able to give an account. A popular radio talk show host has been asking for days, where de money come from, neither Prime Minister or any Minister of Government has denied the allegations. Do you believe , other Dominicans, who are suffering financially, will care who they hurt, whether it be Australians or other foreigners, when they see certain men walking the streets of Roseau with their jacket, tie and a big million dollar smile on their faces. According to the song, ” follow de leader, leader, leader, follow de leader.” My apologies to the Aussies.

They knew we had Australian visitors in Dominica for the weekend, and they should have ensured that every street in the capital was under giving 24 hr. police patrol, especially when one remembers how some female cricketers from one of the islands were attacked a few years ago.
The last time the Australians were here, it was a member of their media that gave us kudos and spoke highly of Dominica. Three years later we will hear the opposite from them, as the Chavez policies of Skerrit continue to turn many into criminals.

A lot has already been said about the attack and theft in Dominica. It is all over Australia and will be through other Media outlets worldwide and sports fans. This is not good for Dominica. For the size of Dominica, it makes it look like an unsafe place to travel to. Consider other teams who plan to play in Dominica in future. I hope they will learn from the Australians.
Do not go out alone at night, i.e., to walk the streets. Go in a group with more than two people.
Do not walk in secluded/dark places at night.
Do not go to an ATM in Dominica at nights.
I do think the criminals were on the look out for anyone who goes to an ATM. They know that visitors will have a certain amount of money on them.

Those kinds of individuals in Dominica do not represent me, and the rest of our well mannered Dominicans, who love our country and is proud of it.

Those individuals are a small minority, in our country, wandering the land with the form of a human being–but they are in no way human –for a human being was made to have a conscience, which is from God, He uses that conscience to teach the way of Life in Love.

On behalf of our well mannered people of Dominica, I extend an apology to the visiting Australian Cricketers–especially the two victims–those lazy and wicked individuals do not represent us; we are largely a God fearing people, who knows how to share the Love that He bestows to us, with everyone–whether local or visitors.

Times are hard in Dominica , indeed, jobs are scarce and opportunities are non existence however these no-good bums need to be made a lesson off. I am not sure if there was an increased police presence in the Capital when the cricket was on.

Cricket in the country means more people than normal in the city, more party than normal in the city and more tourist than normal in the city.
An increased presence of the police in the city both foot patrol and mobile patrol, especially in the area where the tourist are most likely to frequent and where the bums live.
The very same thing that happens during carnival should happen when there is cricket, police should be out there trying their best to protect the country`s image by protecting the tourist. You never get a second chance to create a first impression and once your imagine is tarnished then that is it. We in Dominica cannot afford this to happen because we have not reached anywhere near our full potential within tourism, nowhere…

Those thugs who do not give two hoots about D/ca’s reputation and visitors or anyone for that matter, know that they, the tourists/visitors will have a lot of money on them.
Really, there should have been more police patrol presence in Roseau at that time especially those areas the cricketers/visitors reside and would frequent, as also banks/ATM’s.
I hope the police authorities take note of that and step up their surveillance at such times. If D/ca has undercover police in unmarked vehicles, this would be a good idea to catch those criminals in the act.
If D/ca does not have them, it would be an opportune time to consider and implement them.

    • The Real Facts
      June 7, 2015

Dominicans must be smart and also help the police but do not get yourself involved.
Here is an idea of what could be done when people steal those things:
For one, they will try to sell them. If they approach anyone to purchase them, they should refuse by doing so politely and say, “I cannot afford it”. After that they should report it to the police.
Or they could agree to purchase them and say they have no money but will bring the money later and get the particulars of the location, etc. Then they should report it to the police. Before they return (but they should not), the police will be on their heels and arrest them.
Criminals should be caught in the act. It would be wise to have a hidden camera which will take their picture without them knowing it.
