Two in custody for Calibishie robbery/rape case

Police have taken two men into custody for questioning in connection with the robbery and rape of a woman in Calibishie.

While confirming this on Saturday, the police said they could not release the identities of the men because of the nature of the case.

They have indicated that the two are from the north eastern part of Dominica.

However sources close to the matter have told Dominica News Online that the suspects are from the village of Wesley.

One of the two was reported to have been arrested in the company of his girlfriend who is from Calibishie.

The bus one of the suspects was driving was also seized, DNO has been informed.

The victim, an American living in Dominica for the past nine years, was reportedly beaten with a cutlass and robbed at gunpoint.

She was also reportedly raped.

DNO will continue following this story and will publish information as soon as it becomes available.

There should be no case. They should be handed over to the villagers for beating. Soon Calibishie will not be the tourist spot. Time to put the breaks on them criminals.

what angers me the most about all this is the fact that these criminals who are not even from Calibishie are simple taking away food from our tables. Our jobs are disappearing. Already farming are none productive and jobs are not easily available. They are making life difficult for us. To all the victims who are directly affected by this, I wish to express my deepest sorrow. I am so very very sorry and may God give you the strengh to overcome. ‘ONE LOVE’

I consider these recent acts as acts of treason. Offenders should be dealt with more severely. They are affecting our country and will turn away investor. Our economy will suffer and thus future generations. A strong message needs to be sent to these offenders in order to deter those who are contemplating such acts.

I endorse Arab’s comment. These perpetrators should be severely punished. Police putting measures in place as suggested by our P.M is not sufficient. These people should be castrated.Legalise that form of punishment, that’s the measure I want in place.

i don not agree with a lot of things that go on in the U.S, but when it comes to crime and punishment I think that there are alot of things that we can look into adopting. When people are convicted ofmany crimes their drivers license are suspended for a while. Also bus drivers and taxi drivers whould have permits to carry people , they should go through a licensing and registration sytem in order to carry passengers as they have the lives of people in their hands everyday, We need to buck up and move with the times. We need to look at drugs, how we sentence people for drug crimes and I am not talking about the petty crimes. We have drug dealers in the North that get off all the time with a fine that they can obviously pay and it is ridiculous. That is why they don’t want Tiyani because he was messing with the status quo, everyone in that area of DA knows who the drug dealers are and what goes on, but noone cares because it is their livelihood. Really ? Possession of unlicensed guns needs some serious looking into, in NY if one is caught with an unlicensed gun they are slapped with a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 3years if convicted. Wake up people, we don’t care. Everything in Dominica is really inside out. We need to wake up if we are serious about tourism and even ourselves.

I am from Wesley and lately the things that are happening at Wesley is diguisting and downright shameful.
I am begining to feel embarassed. The no morals, no value young people from Wesley need to be taken off the street by law enforcement.
It is shameful to see the number of young men sitting alongside the roads daily and the number of them that are smoking drugs in plain view. THE POLICE IN THE STATION IS DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHIN!
Mr Commissioner you need to investigate WESLEY. Do something about it before it is too late.

I THINK WESLEY IS LEFT OUT IN THE COLD BY THE POLICE WITH THEIR COMMUNITY POLICING PROJECT.

MR COMMISSIONER PLEASE I WANT A FEED BACK.

I posted this in response to another article but it has merit:

I’m reading post after post after post blaming the police and the government. Typical head in the sand blame somebody else. For you that live in Calibishie, most of you know exactly who’s stealing and committing other crimes. This culture of protecting each other is going to result in nothing but more hardship for everybody.

What industry does Dominica have left other than tourism? Beat up, rape, steal, murder tourists and expats and what do you think will happen then? Think China and Venezuela will save you? Do you really want Dominica to be known as nothing better than an island populated by inner city type thugs equal to some of the worst in the US?

What do you think happens when these people go back to the States or Europe? Is everybody too stupid around here to even imagine the tremendous damage done to Dominica over the French girl’s rape at Batibou? What about Rick and Alicia? Does anybody with the common sense of a sand crab not realize these people talk, the press picks up on it and then others won’t come?

The police cannot do everything. The community MUST step up and help. Even the finest law enforcement organizations in the world are helpless in silence. You want to get mad then look in the mirror for the person to get mad at. In the end only the people can effect change, nobody else. You want a warm, loving people on a beautiful tropical island then do something to earn it. Otherwise Dominica will earn a reputation as a dangerous place with people that could care less. Everybody will be much poorer and unhappy. What a sad future for our children.

Stop the blatant lying. not all the youths are bad.the police patrol on foot some times. you should probably ask the chief how many men are there at the station, ask yourself do the parents have good parenting capabilities and make the kids aware of the ills of society. i think you should keep your empty and senseless comments in your bedroom for you and your queer mate.

I want to join by condeming the act of even entering the lady’s home. It is alledged that the one who has the girlfriend is well know for stealing since he stole pampers from a shop in Calibishie and was caught outside the shop with it.
He and them are from wesley but calibishie is high lighted. Our communty is outraged about those nonsense
Thanks to the police force. Calibishie is a good place to live, our tourist are really visiting and we have the most guest houses on the island and i belive thats why the culprits are targeting our community.
We have to countue communty policing and report all suspects to the police in order to maintain sanity in our lovely village.

I agree with you. In the news it is always Calibishie and people start believing that Calibishie is bad. Calibishie is a beautiful and friendly place but all the thugs from around the island seem to come here one by one. Reason: the pickings in Calibishie are better than anywhere on the island. If the police had a larger and more visual presence in Calibishie and the villagers would work with them I am absolutely certain that the present problems would be eradicated in a very short period of time.

DNO in your face!!!! See now the guy are from Wesley.

If you looking for a drug dealer, with no doubt i would say go to Calibishi but if you looking for someone in connection with robbery or rape check the neighbouring villages.
WOODFORDHILL, BENSE, WESLEY, they are the ones coming to Calibishie to commit these criminal acts.

We can do that, and I can assure you that most parents do just that, but what are the guaranties that the children will listen, there are many factors that can lead kids astray from good parenting. What we need right now in Calibishie is more aggressive police presence to help Weed out all the criminals and punish them with the full extent of the law.

When i first every came to Dominica i was never ever scared, which is what induced me to move to this most beautiful island in the caribbean. after i had visited most of the other islands, i always used to love being in Dominica because it was so safe and relaxing, i could go any where {within reason}alone, and even when i moved to Dominica and became part of the Dominica community i still never felt scared, i even visited woodford hills beach there with my dogs on some afternoon, and again never ever felt scared not even when the odd local would come for a chat or sell me some jelly nut.
for me to read all of this on a weekly basis some times makes me feel that i am lucky not to be in Dominica any more, even though i miss her daily, i do not think i would feel as safe as i did those few years ago, which is awfully sad.
To be very honset i am even a little bit worried about returning to visit next year, i do hope for the sake of the tourist industry in Dominica something will be put in place, as if the rest of the world gets to hear about this then i think that will be the demise of the tourist trade, and if people are not safe to come and enjoy the nature and be free to go hiking and to enjoy
the beaches then they will not come, as there are no all inclusive hotels with lots of activitys or security to encourage them to come.
Also weather people of Dominica like it or not, out side visitors that make Dominica there home are good for the country as they pay into your tax coffers and do not sponge off your goverment in any form of aid, i know myself when i had my business there you have to employ local people you pay your VAT, your tax your import duty on your business goods, and then of course you have the money from your personnel side like the tax you pay on your income, your rent, and all the other utility bills that you have to pay, so any form of over seas visitor who wishes to settel in Domiica legally is good for Dominica, so again if people keep getting attacked or like the poor irish guy last year who was murdered, that will make Dominica a non attractive destination.
I do not know what to do apart from say some prayers for Dominica, and wish every one my love and best wishes that things begin to settle down, and Dominica can get back to being what was the most beautiful place on gods planet, with the worlds friendliest people.xxxxx

    1. surgically remove their balls, put the balls in a glass bottle, and give them back to them.
    2. Publish their pictures in all news papers and on all telephone post with the heading “Balls-less.”
    3. Parade them on the back of a flat bed truck through Roseau, with a loud speaker stating their crime.
    4. Stick a large fishing hook through their penis and hang them upside down from their penis for 12 hours. If they dont die by then set them free.

if the police have caught the people who did this dreadful thing, then all I can say is GOOD. now we want the full extent of the law to come down on them. Unfortuntly it is now too late for us who
tried desperatly to tell our friends, that they were welcome and safe. They have now closed down all thier buisness and property transactions. the husband feels that he could not possibably go off to buisness meetings leaving his wife and young family alone. Staff that they had employed are now out of work. the family have dropped Dominica off thier list and looking to invest on another island. other people we know are now quietly putting thier property up for sale. Friends who’s son wanted to come to Dominica to get married next year on a beach at Calibishie refuses to come.He and his new to be wife are lookingg elsewhere.last thing he wants is what should be one of the best day’s of his life ruined by being robbed and attacked and his new wife raped. Another thing that we are aware of is that Tourists are being told not to go to beaches paticulaly in the north of the island alone. Although it is not said outright, they are being made aware of this area becoming a no go zone if they are alone. this is so sad for this beautiful island.

Its time for the laws in this land to change.. rape, murder, drug possession ( enough to consider intent to sell) all should have a minium punishment of 25yrs- and nothing like deducting time on the sentence because the case take awhile before it goes to court. and prison shouldn’t be a “hang out spot” either- where ppl committing crime just to get to stockfarm- but if we make prison like those in China or Russia or Guadeloupe etc where ppl aint seeing daylight, water and dumpling 3x a day and give them so some serious hard labor then these humans acting like animals will find work to do and will be afraid to go to jail!!!! Lord protect your people and may JUSTICE rain in this land!!

A twenty-five year sentence is actually a life sentence, thus they will not have the opportunity to think of rubbing and raping another woman for the rest of their natural life!

This is a terrible crime and my heart goes out to the American lady that had to suffer this brutal attack. Rape is the worst thing anyone can do to any person it violates their body and their human rights. Unfortunately, rape is not looked on by quite a lot of West Indian men as a bad crime or violation. Rape often goes unpunished here and I know there is a lot of family abuse here in Dominica where rape is involved. If a child is brought up with this going on to them in the family then they will automatically think it is normal and carry on the circle when they grow up. This is a very frightening and disgraceful crime! The American lady lived alone and was known by the villagers in Calibishie I believe she had helped some families and is kind, generous and well liked. It is a cowardly act that these men have done, two men, beating, raping and intimidating a defenseless woman at night. These individuals are sick and inhumane, no punishment can be good enough for them.

So he was a bus driver? Or was he just driving a bus? If he was a bus driver then he needs even harsher sentencing. These idiots like to blame lack of employment for their behaviour. Yet the people who come to bring the money are the ones they offend and make it harder for them to make money in the future. Thank god that they have been. I was starting to lose all confidence in the police. After they rob the woman thy rape her, and yet at least one of them have a girlfriend. these people do things just for the thrill of doing it.

Yes, it is very scary. They are entitled to a lawyer. So are the laws. Even the massmurderer Breivik here in Norway that killed over 70 children and young people have one. They are indeed from the village of Wesley!

A third one is also arrested; I believe I know them all, and their parents, eve the mother who left her son and went to England, never returned, never look after her son.

When he found out who is his father; he went to his father’s people for help they turn their backs on him stating that he did not look like ” them.” So we create little monsters which after a while these monsters comes back to haunt us!

Now he and his uncle is in custody for this robbery, and rape. I know the names of the three, however, if the police is not releasing their names, Francisco knows ” but I doh talking eh.”

All I can say one of them is employed by a relative of mine!

When we have children, and neglect them, they raise themselves without value, and rage within, thus they act with vengeance.

They are so dumb they took the victims ATM card and went to extract money from the ATM. not even realizing that there are cameras on ATM’s even in Dominica.

Time some Dominicans stopped harbouring criminals.

If the police have the right people, then they should be locked up for life. No hanging, as I dont believe that this will deter others (and some might even make them out to be martyrs), but a life time of torment/suffering/abuse by other inmates, loss of all privileges is surely worse.

  79. GEORGE CARROTHERS
    April 28, 2012

Twelve years ago I came to Dominica to hike into Boiling Lake, the second largest volcanic lake in the world. (New Zealand #1). Dominica, what a magnificant island. I stayed at the Fort Young Hotel. Sunday morning I awoke and decided to attend the Anglican stone church located directly across from the Fort Young. As I entered, I was most graciously welcomed by a gentleman at the door. The small choir sang a few hymns and then the minister spoke. It was hurricane season the the sermon was a prayer to ask that the hurricane would not strike the the “Nature Island” But what was really quite moving was that the sermon went on to ask for prayers for those on other islands that might suffer the wrath of the hurricane.
From the Anglican Church I then attended the Catholic Church and again was welcomed at the door by a young woman colorfully dressed with a wonderful smile. Taking a seat next to a family, I listened to the sermon and then witnessed the spirit of music amongst the congregation. Standing, hands held together, everyone singing with the band playing I was consumed by the spirit of Dominica. A spirit of goodwill, of smiling faces, of helpful persons offering information and stories of the island they held dear to their own lives.
I returned a few months later, captivated by what I had witnessed and the second visit was no different. I hiked to Middleham Falls, to Bouri Lake, and rented a car to drive the circle of the lush ,green island. Truely amazing !
I returned a few months later to look for a piece of property and that story is longer than I need to express here but suffice to say I found a beautiful place, and after a few years had some local men build a house for me. We became friends, sharing meals, playing dominoes, and drinking rum. What an cultural adventure for us all.
I return many times a year to spend time in Dominica. I have gotten to know the customs agents at the airport, the drivers who still start to offer a ride until they know I walk home from the airport, through the village buying the local newspaper, hello to those faces on the street, “how you do’in mon” another hello to my 81 year old neighbor and then to the comfort of my simple home.
Things have changed in my twelve years in Dominica. Things have changed in the world ! The world has come to Domincia and with it the drugs the violence, the indolence and the ill founded ethic pervasive in this new worldwe live in.
I pray that Domincia has the strength to rise above these ills and return to the cherished Nature Island, whose spirit I witnessed in the people and in the churches twelve years ago. best to you.

      April 29, 2012

Thank you George for your wonderful piece. I have been here 28 years and feel the same way. I have traveled often promoting this wonderful place, so I too am saddened by the unfolding events. I am saddened by the increasing amount of negative comments by the tourists as they are either robbed, harassed and followed every day. These crimes should be treated with the utmost importance as they are not just crimes against the individuals, but also against the country, it’s reputation, its ability to income generate, it’s ability to attract visitors and its against all of us who live here, locals, ex pats, visitors alike…… as they have infringed on our peace of mind.
