Two years in prison for importation of marijuana

Julie Jno Baptiste, one of four men arrested in  a boat on Saturday, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of importation of 13,500 grams of cannabis, valued at over $300,000.

He was one of four men appeared who before Magistrate Candia George this afternoon to face multiple drug charges after they were apprehended early Saturday morning on a boat off the coast of Fond Cole.

It is reported that boat was coming from St. Vincent.

All four men, Robert Dublin of Massacre, Joseph Stevens of Newton and David McPherson of Massacre, were charged with one count each of possession of cannabis, importation of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Jno Baptiste pleaded guilty to all three charges against him while the others pleaded not guilty. Without objection from Police Prosecutor Claude Weekes, the three who pleaded not guilty were offered bail in the sum of $200,000 each.

Dublin was released after one surety posted his bail but the other two defendants were remanded after failing to produce suitable sureties. Trial date is set for May 14, 2012. Dublin is required to report to the Mahaut Police Station every Monday and Friday between 7AM and 7PM.

Meantime, Jno Baptiste was dealt with immediately after the bail applications were heard.

According to the facts of the case, the four men were picked up by a Coast Guard vessel on patrol, approximately four nautical miles west of Fond Cole at around 7AM Saturday morning. P

According to the prosecution Jno Baptiste said after being arrested, “The marijuana you all brought there, is me and [Stevens] that come from St Vincent with it but them other fellas have nothing to do with it.”

Attorney for the defendant David Bruney pleaded that although the defendant had a similar offence in 2004, he had seen the error of his ways, having admitted guilt on all counts and asked for leniency in sentencing.

Magistrate George sentenced Jno Baptiste to two years imprisonment for the charge of importation of cannabis and on the other charges posed no separate sentence.

The boat was among three intercepted by police within a few days.

Can’t stop it for over 40 years now. Wasting money at it. LEGALIZE IT! So that it don’t go thru the same routes as the hard drugs like coke and crack. Then it can be controled and grown locally.

When you make soft drugs such as liquor and marijuana illegal that’s what happens, people take it underground, and you have to throw precious resources needed to effectively stop hard drugs at it. A waste of money.

      @ dominican abroad

Those of you who say legalize it are not brilliant people. It is a sure killer and will suppress your brains and cause mental disorder. This is what it will do to you and those who take it. It will also make you become foolish. When some people are under this influence, they are liable to commit murder.
What is not good for the health should be discouraged. People who deal with dangerous illegal drugs should be punished. You could call them murderers. They are also selfish and self-centered greedy people who make money, wanting to be rich by trading in and selling those drugs, not caring for the health and well-being of their fellow people. They deserve to be imprisoned.

Why not? The law needs to be changed. Let DA be the first to do so for a change. Can any of the so called leaders ever take the lead or are they going to let the UN and drug cartels dictate to all of us so that they can profit at our expense.

Since after the NJIC was exposed in broad daylight as an organisation spying on innocent law abiding citizens,it seem as if they have shifted their focus now..Personally i think the drug dealers need to be punished to the maximum. They do a lot of harm to our people, especially the young generation.

Is that the maximum penalty allowed by law? If so,we need to bring our laws in tune with the times in which we are living. Why didn’t the magistrate just send him home? What is the legal department doing or planning to do about those outdated laws that are on our books? Is there amaximum sentence that can can be handed down? Or is the magistrate left with no choice? What recommendations has the bar association proposed as regards those outdated laws? Need some anmswers.

well during the court hearing about the passport issue with pm and them the attorney general who is supposed to be a neutral person was in the court instead of being in his office drafting new laws and ammending some antiquated laws of Dominica. so what do you expect the magistrate to do. these are the things we need to challenge and demonstrare about.
