UPDATE: Police charge Cottage man in Portsmouth killing

Azille has been remanded in custody

Police have charged Emanuel ‘Mani’ Azille of Cottage for the murder Marilyn McLawrence of Portsmouth.

Azille, 57, appeared in court in Roseau on Thursday morning before magistrate, Candia George-Carrette.

He did not enter a plea as the matter is an indictable one.

He is expected to return to court on October 30, in Portsmouth.

In court police prosecutor Micheal Laudat said applications have to be made for “special measures” since some analysis in the matter has to be done overseas.

He asked for more time to set a specific date to move the matter forward.

McLawrence’s body was found at the end of a track in Portsmouth on the evening of September 30, in what the police described as a ‘grotesque and gruesome’ crime.

The killing sent shock waves among those who knew McLawrence well and was condemned by MP, Ian Douglas.

Azille is not new to the police in Dominica.

In 2011 he escaped a life sentence behind bars after being found guilty of possession and intent to supply twelve grams of cocaine.

Azille, according to the police, was found with the drugs in a vacant house in Portsmouth on December 3, 2008.

Instead of a life sentence, he was ordered to spend eight years in prison and pay a fine of $105,000 in one year.

However, the matter was appealed and in November 2012 he was freed by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

The most visible symptom of consumption is the explosion of petty crime. Crack trafficking to Guadeloupe is held by a half dozen family channels based in the neighboring island of Dominica, a member of the Commonwealth and with which France has no extradition treaty, which export crack cocaine hydrochloride to be turned into crack. This is usually a traffic “ants” which is sometimes accompanied by larger movements such as when four of Dominica nationals were arrested in the month of April 1994, in possession of 517 grams of crack, so that ‘they entered illegally in Guadeloupe. Several dealers that nationality, the best known, Vans Baron, were sentenced in absentia by a French court. Emmanuel Azille, called “Big Man”, considered one of the organizers of other traffic, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but escaped in l993. Since then, he continues to operate from Dominica. Another place of manufacture of crack for Guadeloupe is the island of St. Martin. Regarding metropolitan France, it seems that the Guadeloupe exports more expertise in the manufacturing of crack as the drug itself. The island also remains a transit point for Latin American cocaine to Europe, as evidenced by the seizure in September l993, aboard a plane that had just landed at night on the airport station seaside of St. Francis, 200 pounds hydrochloride.

This is an example of why you should have a good character. Obviously this lady was respectable and people loved her. If this were not the case, people would not be scolded when they try to find out the the man did that to her. She has had such a good reputation when she was alive, that her death remains a mystery as no one wants to accept that the man had a motive. For now, everyone is just assuming the man is just the devil and it was a random act. I guess everything will come out in the open for the case. Rest in Peace Marilyne. One way or the other your murderer will pay, they always do, whether through the curt system (which is the less likely one) or with the normal circle of Karma. No one deserves die in this way no matter what skeletons they have in their closet.

In the photographs on DNO, this guy looks like a sociopath and seems high strung on something. If he did this crime, he might not even be aware of it. There should be a place for people like that so that they are not allowed to hurt innocent people.

On the other hand, he could just be “playing” and getting ready to have a lawyer enter an “insanity ” plea after brutally killing that woman. Maybe he felt she was the one who sold him out on his last cocaine case. Back then, he felt someone had gone to the police. If it was she who informed the Police, then someone who knew that must have sold her out and gotten her killed. That would be his motive.

Either way, please bring him back to Judge Bernie for the right punishment. She was right back then and tried to protect the public!

    The “pebble” of Dominica

    by The international drug dispatch
    Archives | 1 June 1994
According to figures provided by the authorities, 2.65 kilograms of crack were seized by the police, gendarmerie and customs of the Antilles-Guyana in 1993. That is almost as much as on the territory of metropolitan France in the same year. The drug seized in Martinique and Guadeloupe was essentially intended for the local market. It made its appearance at the end of the 1980s and settled through economic disruption that followed the passage of Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Made available by its price, 100 to 200 francs “pebble”, its consumption has ceased to progress. In particular, it tends to replace marijuana with other drugs, while the hydrochloride of cocaine and heroin use remains very limited. In the slum of Boissard, as in several areas of Pointe-à-Pitre and its periphery, or on the beach in the seaside resort of Sainte – Anne, the crack is traded openly. The most visible symptom of consumption is the explosion in petty crime.

Trafficking of crack to Guadeloupe is held by a half-dozen family channels based in the neighbouring island of Dominica, Member of the Commonwealth and with which the France has no extradition treaty. They export the crack and cocaine hydrochloride to be turned into crack. It is most often of Ant traffic which is sometimes accompanied by more important as movements when four Dominican nationals were detained in the month of April 1994, in possession of 517 grams of crack, while they illegally penetrated in Guadeloupe.

Several traffickers of this nationality, including the best-known, Vans Baron, were sentenced by default by the French courts. Emmanuel Azille, said “Big Man”, considered to be one of the organizers of the traffic, was given 12 years in prison, but escaped in l993. Since then, it continues to operate from Dominica. Another place of manufacture of the crack for Guadeloupe is the island of Saint-Martin. With regard to the metropolitan France, it seems that Guadeloupe exports more know-how in the manufacture of the crack as the drug itself. Island rest also a place of transit from Latin America to Europe, as cocaine proves it the seizure in September 1993, on board an aircraft coming to land at night on the airport of the seaside resort of Saint-François, 200 kilograms of hydrochloride (corresponding to the EMT in Guadeloupe).

A man like that, a criminal, drug trafficker, a run-a-way from the French prison with a long rap sheet, he should be sent to a psychiatrist for assessment. Who knows what has been going on in his mind and why he murdered Marilyn. We have a few speculations but until the case is heard I hope we will hear more and our assumptions will be correct.
Know whom you associate with. People must be really careful who they befriend. On the other hand some people appear innocent and friendly and could be deceiving. Befriending criminals, some women of all have been murdered by those whom they befriend. It is better to say to them, “Hi and Bye”. Be courteous but reserved without projecting the reservation. It can be done.

As longs as he is found guilty, I am for that punishment after a fair trial, This is a Capital murder crime and yes the death penalty should be sought but the burden of proof is greater and must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed that heinous crime. You all love jumping to conclusions and making those ridiculous comments and in some cases passing judgement early and when the case has been tried and the individual walks free by being found not guilty by a jury of his or her peers…..the Government or the Judiciary is to blamed for that, utter nonsense! I believe in Justice for all right or wrong. It is high time we start broadcasting some of these high profile cases live for everyone to see and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Dominica is too small and such a beautiful place for these things to happen. I believe one of these reasons is the slow wheels of justice by not executing people in a timely manner and more regularly and you will see if the crime rate won’t come down in this small place. Shame on these perpetrators of crime, especially from the North who continues to wreak havoc among the mostly law abiding citizens of this communities and our beloved Dominica. Hearts of to the Police and the citizens who gave the information leading this Individual to be charged so quickly. Detection and Prevention of Crime and Community Policing goes a long way in helping to deal with these issues. God continue to bless Dominica and it’s people.

      October 9, 2014

I feel pressed to say so many things, but DNO won’t let my post go past moderation…which by the way, is understandable. Even though this forum allows anonymity, I too have a conscience, and I respect both the victim and even the alleged perpetrator (since he is innocent until proven guilty). Manni might have a rap sheet, and although he have found himself in trouble with the law on innumerable occasions, I never would have imagined him to be a murderer. As my village folk, I am completely aware of his tyranny and vicious ways, but I have also seen the humble human in him. I knew Mrs McLawrence as well, a lady so full of life, a free spirit, a woman loved by most; she did not have to go this way. Whatever happened on the evening of September 30th, none of us know except for the victim who can’t share and the perpetrator who we still are not 100% sure of his/her guiltiness until the courts run this case, and of course God Almighty. However, if it’s one statement I feel compelled to make is that we ought to be careful whom we allow into our lives and how deeply we allow our relationships with them to grow. Because at the end of the day, there’s only 1 person responsible for one’s well-being and that’s oneself! When that becomes a non-priority, or just starts to slip away, the devil himself takes up residence.

Justice is not served yet just because a man has been arrested. Justice will only be served when someone has been sentened and put away for life for the gruesome murder of a mother who has left how many young children grieving for her untimely departure. Justice is making someone pay for their crime, this man who was arrested is innocent until proven guilty. Has he been proven guilty? and this is wherre the justice system comes to play, all those involved, investigators, prosecutors, judges and the like, how long will it take them to get this matter going? will they bring this man to justice for his crime while the poor lady’s corpes languishes under this earth. Did she deserve to die the way she did? or did she deserve to die at all. What could this lady have done to be mitted out with all these deadly lashes. Some people are asking why and this is expected but the accused is a notorious character. DNO has run a few articles about Mani and his runnings with the law. But this is just what has gone thru the court system.
DNO it is no secret that Manny has quite a reputation. The French would love to have him for we all know of his famous escape from the prison in Guadeloupe where the French intended to throw away the keys assigned to him.

To those who had facilitated this character particularly during his hey days I wonder how you feel. You see when some of us condone wrong in society we only create problems down the road.

I love Marylyn in fact Marylyn was an instant fit to our community even before she moved to Portmouth. She was still in Bath Estate while she and her husband dated and we all loved her cause she was so loveable and friendly. I am so saddened but very much so upset that this character Mannix was out on the streets. But there is a lesson for many of us particularly those of us who conviniently support wrong over right for what ever reason. We need to condemn those who display criminal behavior and insure that ALL criminals receive the punishment that they deserve and that includes drug dealers, politicians and the police officers suspected of murderous activities. Now that Manny is charged for this gruesome murder it cannot be unreasonable to ask why isn’t there swift and quick process for Joshua Ettiene. Again we cannot isdue convinient justice.

Marylyn I love you and RIP

Fool….what do you believe that ‘charged means’. Weren’t the officers arrested and charged in the death of Joshua as well? They were CHARGED. Charged simply means OFFICIALLY ACCUSED of a crime for which you are arrested. There is no justice in a charge… Why are people here saying justice is served. You are all idiots. The charge is the CRIME THAT ONE IS BEING ACCUSED OF. Therefore when one is charged, this simply means that they are officially accused and processes for prosecution will begin. SIMPLE lesson for all these ignoramuses…..

What motive could he possibly have had for something like that?? And what evidence is there of his guilt?? Neither of these issues are being addressed in the reports; not mentioned at all. That’s weird.

It is a time for reflection. I pray that the lives of the individuals and the circumstances will serve to bring light to the abuse and suffering that many endure in silence and in the name of love. Women, lets be real. When there are things happening to us that we know is not right nor healthy, let’s deal with them and move on. Let us be careful of our associations, friends etc. I am so sorry that Marilyn had to lose her life in this manner. May the Almighty God remember her heart, her efforts, her love and may those most deeply affected find consolation in knowing that the Lord never fails and He will make this right in one way or the other. To the convict I say, you need help. You have a rap sheet almost as long as your arm. Your acts should be punished but I hope your life takes a turn for the better. You have done the worst – drugs etc, now murder. May the Lord have mercy on you Mani. You need help! I pray that you never get the opportunity to disrupt anybody’s life or family anymore. You have done enough harm throughout your life. It is time for your mad ways to come to an end!

Before all the punishment that one wishes to mete out as far as I recall one is innocent until proven guilty. If indeed he is found guilty give kudos to the local law enforcement who regularly endure local criticism .

Keep murders out of Dominica. And when there are crimes of this nature the police should do all in its power to catch the person responsible and they must receive the maximum punishment. Please PM Skeritt do not go softly on crime. Train your police team to leave no stones unturned to catch these people. There must be a deterrant. I don’t want Dominica to become like some of these other islands where these people get away with their crime because they know the law of the land is so weak and the chances are they will get away.

Do you know whom this is??? He was sentenced to 8 yrs by Bernie Stephenson for cocaine related charges had to pay a fine of over 100 grand or spend another year in jail. Norde represented him in court of appeal and he was free. Let’s see how this plays out in our ridiculous justice system.

I do not support Domestic violence or violence of any kind against men or against women. Violence is violence. I also believe in forgiveness and we letting the judicial systems take their course.

But if this man is really the one who did that to this woman. I think he should be punished in the most violent manner possible. I cant believe someone could do that to another human being. And in Dominica? A place known to be a loving and peaceful nation. Boy if is mr that really kill that girl. He should be shown no mercy.

Any man-on-woman crime is domestic violence? SMH. Domestic violence happens at home or in a family… as suggests the term DOMESTIC.

People who commit that type of crime do not stop to think about the punishment. The state of Texas has the death penalty and they still commit capital murder there.

What makes you think there will be no murder if we implement the death penalty?
