UPDATE: Robbery at Nassief, second in a week

Police are investigating robbery that occurred at Nassief on Goodwill Road on Tuesday.

According to reports from Police Public Relations Officer Kenth Mathew, at approximately 4:10 p.m on Tuesday, two masked men armed with a firearm held two employees of the lumber outlet of J.E Nassief on Goodwill Road near Valley Engineering Sales and Services.

Mathew says the thieves escaped with $14,622.02 in cash and $3,604.30 in cheques.

“This occurred as the employees left the workplace. They were forced back into the building by the assailants who were waiting on the outside. They were forced to lay down under threats. Their movements were restricted with duct tape by the assailants who made good their escape with their gains,” he reported.

He said one cashier was able to free herself and seek help from the staff of Valley Engineering who went across and freed her two colleagues.

“The same cashier was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital in a distress state,” Matthew said.

Police is appealing to the general public to assist with any information that may assist in the apprehension of the perpetrators of the incident.

Last week the Coca Cola outlet in Fond Cole was robbed at gunpoint and a worker tied up in a similar fashion.

One man has been arrested for the Coco Cola crime.

investigating my ass, I am sorry for Dominicans when it come to crime. No new technology to help the police force. All we hear day in and day out is “we are investing the matter”. Our plice commissioner should not hold that post, he do not have a clue of how to run the force. That is so sad when there are people who can actually do the job and are treated like dogs……well that is Dominiica for you.

Is instructions from Q that caused the firebombing of Emanuel and his wife’s home? or the firebombing of the Police officer’s home? or could it be instructions allegedly from the guy who police looking for as the confession to police goes?

Dominicans are anxiously awaiting for the guy’s return to Dominica as well as the outcome of the go-slow, contaminated investigations. Is it a job planned and financed by their MASTER? Who is defending and protecting the MASTER? Who influenced who in the alledged fraud of millions of $$$$$$$ from Emanuel? What about that case? What about the two firebombing heinous criminal acts? Where have the investigations gone? Is Q that preventing or denying justice? Is wicked some of you all Dominicans wicked?

As an owner of 4D Ag-Center, I implore the citizens of Dominica to unite and work to eradicate this kind of crime. This despicable act is unacceptable in a modern functional society, and must be stopped. For those that recommend businesses hire private security, I would like to explain that this is very expensive for most businesses, and just goes to make goods you purchase more costly. My company has invested in security measures over the years, and I can tell you that it is not cheap.

You do not see a rash of localized crime like this occur in most countries without serious police intervention. You already pay taxes to employ a security force. Why pay more for goods by asking businesses to pay for armed guards? The whole purpose of a police force is to maintain law and order. I certainly hope that this matter is being pursued diligently.

It saddens me to hear that hard working employees of neighboring businesses have been traumatized by these thugs. 4D Ag-Center has taken extra measures to dissuade, discourage, prevent, and thwart this kind of crime. Employees have been educated on the proper handling of this type of incident.

I ask that you continue to patronize the businesses of Goodwill Road and the port area to show your support for the companies and hard working employees in the area. If you see anything out of the ordinary, please contact the police urgently, and do not put yourself at risk.

    Most sincerely,

    Jason Szumlanski
    Director
    4D Ag-Center

Are you insinuating that the Police should patrol every business and at all times? I think this is impossible. The Police have other assignments to fulfill. There are times that the Police will patrol those areas which may deter crimes. Generally, the Police is called after a crime is committed.

      • October 20, 2011

That is exactly what I am insinuating. The police force is there to maintain law and order. The primary means is crime *prevention* not crime punishment!

        October 20, 2011

one more thing u say its expensive but ask nasif how expensive is 14,000 rite now.

      • October 20, 2011

Excellent point about hats and hoodies, but it is hard to enforce.

Regarding the $14,000… The math does not work. Let’s put some hypothetical numbers on it. Imagine that I pay a guard $1,500 per month including payroll taxes and health benefits. I would have to be robbed every nine months to make this worthwhile. If I expect my business to be robbed to the tune of $14,000 every nine months, then by all means I would hire the guard.

The point is that businesses should not have to incur the additional expense and pass along the costs to customers who already pay outrageous taxes, duties, and fees. As a business owner, providing the best value possible is always a goal. Paying a guard as insurance is an unreasonable and unsustainable expense, especially in the face of competition that chooses not to do so.

It is a difficult decision, but I do not think armed guards are the way to go. There are other means to discourage, prevent, and thwart crime that are more effective and less costly.

Thank you for your comments and concerns.

I keep saying that if something of significance is not done soon, Dominica’s crime rate is going to sky rocket. That significant something is availability of jobs, training for the youths in many areas of skilled professions, access to resources and a level playing field based on qualifications.
Some of the worlds poorest and unjust societies have the highest crime rates.

A crime done with the pen, in 95% of the cases have farther reaching detrimental effects than a crime done with a gun. But we as a society always seems to focus on violent crimes while we allow the pen crimes to go unpunished.

when i read some of these comments i can do nothing but laugh, just like slavery conditioned many generations to think and behave a certain way, this decade of the erosion of institutions, no economic growth for the majority, nepotism, little respect for laws by the elite, the mindless following of politicians by the masses, will condition a generation of youth. when i see the people who are suppose to ensure for good governance side step that responsibility in the rush to benefit from the spoils, what example is being given to the youth? who are the role models of today’s youth? do you hear the youth talk about becoming a civil servant or even business man, when they know these ppl struggle to make ends meet or are they going to emulate those who beat the system(both white colour or violent)through very questionable activities? wake up and realise that we are the ones who control what happens, we sit in our homes and we support all what the criminals do then we wonder why our children grow up to be a more violent form of them.

  27. Patrick
    October 19, 2011

The business community along goodwill road need to take a second look at how the society in Dominica has changed and ask themselves why is it they have not put security control measures in place to confront the challenges facing their businesses.

Hence the questions you must ask yourselves are these:

Why I have failed to implement CCTV?

Why is it we do not have security guards?

Why the reluctance in accepting debit cards when many of my customers have these cards?

Why do I continue to have one deposit bag per day going to the bank?

Why I do not engage a security company to transport my day’s taking to the Bank?

To date Maximum, Coco cola and now Nassief with no capture. Will Valley , E H Charles, DAPEX, 4-D, and the others continue to sleep?

The criminals are aware that many policemen are off the streets at this time of the month for parade practices for independence celebrations and so they operate with impunity. Is the business community aware too?

We have no helicopter patrol in and out of Roseau to serve as a deterrent because we are poor but we have coast guard patrol that can be used to an extent in conjunction with a rapid response unit if we have created one

The society has undergone many changes yet our business community, the police, and our laws are stagnant!!!

Our crime fighting techniques and counter intelligence techniques needs upgrading.

You cannot tell me that an individual sitting on a bus stop for over two hours on Goodwill Road does not arose suspicion.

      @ gorrilaz

Still around as myself? In all things we must be fair and just and think beyond.
In simple terms, some of you seem to overlook the fact that in order to obtain a loan, applicants must be employed in a stable job. The income must be a certain percentage above the loan payments. The financial institutions take into consideration the overall monthly expenditure. Surely you should also know that they should have some sort of tangible asset so that if the customer fails to fulfill this obligation over a certain period their asset will be ceased in lieu of payment. This is the way it is in every country.
After conducting an evaluation of their assets, the institution decides whether they will be able to meet their daily needs and honor their loan payments; in other words, their monthly obligations. On this basis they may obtain the loan or it will be denied.
This gives no one the thought or opportunity to steal from another. The store owners as Coca Cola and Nassief also have their expenditure and to meet their monthly/annual obligations.
There are times we think that business owners are rich. We only view this on the surface. No matter how long they are in business, they are merely making it, keeping their heads above water.
Think for a moment their expenditure, taxes and employees’ salaries. They purchase goods and they must pay for those goods and for their transportation. They also have their personal, domestic expenditure and the list goes on…

I have one thing to tell those thieves. Stealing from others is no way to live. You are an unhappy and miserable lot.
A sure Hell is awaiting you. You are doomed for all eternity. Who knows how you will age, if you live long enough. Right on earth people reap what they sow and then in the netherworld.
Unless you return the stolen money/goods, make reparation with a humble and contrite heart to appease our God, you will not be forgiven. Satan’s company in his everlasting cauldron of fire, Hell is your lot. FACE THE FACTS AND RESULT OF YOUR EVIL ACTIONS.

Look here,it is not a matter of making an example of anybody. The Police have to operate within the conformity of the Law. What the Police need to do is apprehend these people, and bring them to justice. And it is up to the Magistrate and or Judges to make an example of them, by imposing harsher sentences…Police can’t just go around brutalizing people.

But the questions that are left to be ask are…..Are the Police interested in crime prevention, crime fighting and the apprehension of perpetrators?….
This is the second time in a matter of a weeks time that these people have robbed business places .Same M.O.,same guys…..How could that be possible it the Police were doing their jobs effectively….I mean c’mon Dominica is a small island, what is the problem.
How come you guys no how to find the ganja plants them, where persons die under mystirious circumstances, but you can’t catch the real dangerous criminals?…Can you give me an honest answer?….

It is high time you guys get your act together so we can have a safer Country…….

You are also a citizen. What are you doing to assist in eliminating crimes in DA? I have previously stated unless those who know them and what they have done and report them the Police may never find out. Those who know may never report them because they are given some of the money and living off the avails their theft. They are aiding and abetting crime. It is a grievous sin and an infraction against the State. If they are caught every one of them will be arrested and eventually be imprisoned. Be confident. Anonymous pray for them to be caught.

like punishment works when you don’t have a choice?? you all should be more worried about the sky high unemployment of the youth in our country instead of looking for all kind of out of world explanation for this predicament. we are no longer in the dark ages where all that happens is some sort of punishment for our evil ways. we need to start talking about jobs and empowerment of youth if not this is just the start of things to come. as more disenfranchised young men and women see little hope of ever being able to own piece of the island or contribute positively towards their own development, crime is the next logical step. you want to see a change try to provide quality employment to a few youths

I think you are forgetting that Dominica is not the only country where there is high unemployment. Why couldn’t these “losers” learn a trade, work the land, find some form of legal employment instead of robbing people? What kind of life is that and how long will this continue before they get apprehended? Whether they are umemployed or not, they should not commit robbery ….. plain and simple!

      • Unknown
        October 19, 2011

@ Rachel, I am currently unemployed, I’ve sent in over 30 applications to different companies. I received only about 3 replies. I sent them in since June. Our people practice a lot of “pull string.” If I did not believe in God, I believe I would have done much more than these robbers.

The biggest criminals on the island are the banks with their high interest rates. Interest is very oppressive and evil. It suffocates the economy.

      October 18, 2011

      @ tiny

You are generalizing. You must not blame all parents. There are many parents who nurtured their children appropriately but as they grew up they associated with bad company. They also have minds of their own. They may have refused to go to church and pray and refused to obey their parents. Well, as they grew up Satan has taken over their minds, hearts, bodies and souls. This is what it has boiled down to.
If those parents did not appropriately nurture their children, God will surely hold them accountable for bad parenting. Parents, the unenlightened ones, obviously never give this a thought. When their children get into such trouble they should examine their conscience to see how they nurtured their children.

I should not be surprised at your ignorant comment which has no bearing whatsoever on the subject matter but I am surprised that some people lack basic common sense and knowledge to deviate from the subject. It may be because they do not know any better. This is all that they know to sway from the topic and fail to address the issue of what occurred, namely the theft at Nassief and the thieves. @ Evolved

Not smart at all. Do you expect the Police to be in every nook and cranny every second of the day and night to keep them under surveillance? Do the Police know who they are and who would do such a thing?
I would think that the Police will take crimes seriously. They do not have to shout it out to the public what they are doing. The Police Department does not operate this way, to inform the public how and when they conduct their investigation.
It is the duty of members of the public who know those people and what they have done to report them to the Police. Some of them will prefer to hide it because they benefit from those crimes. Blame them and not the Police.
