UPDATE: Sherman Webb gets life sentence

Webb waves to reporters after being sentenced

Sherman Webb, who two weeks ago was found guilty of the murder of Barbadian Corey Poleon, was on Friday (July 20, 2012) sentenced to life in prison by Justice Bernie Stephenson Brooks.

Before sentencing Justice Brooks labeled the facts of the case as “unusual and unfortunate and bizarre.”

She described the killing of the Poleon as “cold, callous, brutal, calculated and heinous” and stated that the court needed to send a strong message to society that such acts would not be tolerated.

The prosecution did not ask for the death penalty, instead they requested “life in prison” for Webb.

Webb was represented by attorney at Law Peter Alleyne who maintained Web’s  innocence throughout the week-long trial at the country’s High Court presided over by Madame Justice Brooks.

During the trial Webb told the court that Poleon came to visit him in August of 2009 to conduct “an occult ceremony which involved the summoning of a demon.”

He testified that during the ceremony, Poleon became frightened and a demon possessed his body. He said he chopped  Poleon on the neck with a cutlass to force the demon to leave his body.

He said he later buried Poleon’s body under the wooden house where they had conducted the ritual after “banishing the spirits.”

In his final statement, the 31-year-old Kingshill resident told the court, “I do not agree that I killed Corey. He was a friend of mine.”

You are correct. He should have been in handcuffs and leg shackles. The police should have been holding him. The police did not give it a thought that he could have tried to escape even if he could not get very far. He could have injured someone. They take chances. They are lax. It must be really Dominica. Only in Dominica you say?

    1) Sherman kill a guy in kings hill and walk because he said and the jury agreed that it was self defense.

    2) Sherman was arrested for an (alleged) sexual contact with a boy. (THEY SAY) the boy was a willing participant so the case went nowhere

    3) Sherman was then arrested for the (alleged) kidnapping of 2 boys. From that arrest he gave a confession to the killing of the Bajan guy.

The family of the two boys (THEY SAY) did not go ahead with the kidnapping case because of the embarrassment it would bring on the boys. one of the boys father is well know.

Giving Sherman life in prison is putting him in Heaven,he surrounded by men. Why you think he smiling so much?

Let us hope with that smile and wave which may depict, “See you soon” that he does not plan to escape. We hope not. I hope he decides to change in prison and conform to the Will of God while he has the time. Otherwise when he dies…woe to him.

      @ Andrew

Holy Water will do it to drive them away. Another reminder, a few years ago, I attended a prayerful Catholic gathering in Toronto. A T & T Priest who is famous for conducting Healing Holy Mass Services was visiting. I attended practically all of them that week. He is a good preacher and tells it like it is. I love listening to him.
This took place at a University Convocation Hall. What happened, after the Mass, he and another Priest went around, in front of the congregation as he held the Monstrance with the Host inside and pointed it towards everyone as he walked towards each sitting area. No doubt he was praying inwardly. This was to ask God to bless us. It is also Adoration. As he came around, my hands were clasped and I humbly and fervently prayed to God and even asking him forgiveness for any sins I committed. I was deeply moved. This was a solemn occasion. This is how we should conduct ourselves during this time, prayerfully and with reverence.
Well, when he walked further and pointed the Monstrance towards a group of people, I noticed a West Indian-black woman who was a few rows up in a section starting to shake and carrying-on. Her entire body was gyrating and she kept moving her hands and thrashing them. Two white men who were on either side of her had to hold her. Father stood right there. As everyone looked on in shock and silence, he kept pointing the Monstrance at her until she calmed down. Obviously, he was praying interiorly and no doubt asking God to drive away the enemy away from that woman. This was something else. I had never witnessed something like that. I was told later that she is from St. Lucia.
There was no doubt that she had something in her; possessed by something. Who knows? Some of them go to Church even attend prayerful gatherings and pray but they continue dealing with the devil, doing wicked things and towards others and also go to fortune tellers. They are far from holy and striving for holiness. God who is not deceived knows their shady actions also behind closed doors.
That was the power of the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus in the Tabernacle, unseen by our eyes but He is present quietly and silently looking on and taking in the scene and blessing the congregation as we pray.
The Holy Spirit was present as always. Our Lord said, “Where two or more are gathered in My Name, there I am in your midst and anything you agree upon it will be granted.”
Having stated that, hopefully the Holy Spirit prompted me to do so, this is what those criminals/murderers, the imprisoned need in their lives, “GOD!” Give them Jesus that He may root out all the evil tendencies in them. Only Our Lord Jesus Christ, The Healer is capable of doing that. However, we must lead them to God and pray for them. They are in dire need of His blessing and graces. With the help of God Dominica needs to be restored to a place of safety.
      God bless!

what is the point of this story?

  16. July 20, 2012

“He testified that during the ceremony, Poleon became frightened and a demon possessed his body. He said he chopped Poleon’s neck with a cutlass to force the demon to leave his body”—-News Article.

The statement above should tell us how much we, as human beings, are lacking of the concept of the “spiritual warfare” that we are dealing with on a day to day basis.

The apostle Paul tells is that we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against principalities—-against the spiritual wickedness in high places. We see that truth in Sherman Webbs thinking as he claimed to use a cutlass to cause a demon to leave his friend Poleons body, not know understanding in his mind that cutting his friends neck would kill him.

As I read that statement from Sherman Webb, I perceive that person in him is not evil, but his mind is entrapped by the war of the “spiritual realms” lack of spritual wisdom, understanding and discenment having caused him to make the pack with the devil, to enter in him service.

Poleon is now dead but he is just as guilty as Webb, for by his own choice he made that pack with the devil as well, even to the point when he travelled from Barbados to Dominica to settle that “pack” with the devil through his other servant who is Sherman Webb.

At least Webb is still alive and it is possible that he can receive healing to become freed from whatever number of the demon that possess his mind right now, for there is nothing impossible with God by our faith in Him. Prison term can show this path of faith to Sherman Webb.

I hope that Poleon received that chance of healing at the moment he got frightened and decided to change his mind. It is not impossible that is the reason the demon in Sherman Webb killed him–for the fear of Poleon revealed that the devil would not have the power over him, in the future.

People, please understand that Satan is spirit, just as God is Spirit. God and Satan are both doing their work in us and through us by their connection to our mind–where the battle of Life takes it place for us or against us–it depends on the choice we have made.

Satan feeds to our minds from our senses which directs the functions of our human or physical self–better knowns as natural laws. God feeds to our minds from conscience which directs the function of spiritual self–better known as natural laws, but by steadfast faith.

We can see who or what is driving the people around us just as they can see who or what is driving us through the attitude and conduct we put on display. That is what Jesus meant when He said: You will know them by their fruits. We have got to stand with God through faith and trust, that He might give wisdom and teach discernment.

If Sherman Webb had and form of understanding, pertaining to what he was into, he would know that a cutlass would not destroy a demon in his friend Corey, he would know that a demon does not have a physical body and the use of a cutlass against his friend’s neck would only kill his physical body–not cause a demon to leave him.

When Sherman said that: I do not believe I killed Corey–I heared a child without a mind of his own defending himself, because he did not function by that mind of his. He is solely in control of the demons in him.

That is what the Spirit or spirit does to our mind–we are either funcioning by the Mind of Love–a renewed mind–by our faith– or we are functioning by the commands of our human senses through a carnal mind–Shermans mind is demonic. According to a commentator, he has been imprisoned for as long as he made that pack with Satan–who is his enemy.

The warning is that it is not only Sherman Webb. Yes he went to the extreme, but small as it is Satan’s demons are doing their best to occupy our minds, to do his works of death in us and against those who surround us –no matter who we are as human beings–pope, bishop, priest, pastor, preacher, nun, or Bible School teach; rich and poor, mighty, famous, popular, and powerful.

We need to allow Faith and Trust in God, to teach us discernment, that we might know from what path the thing that has occupied our minds came from. When we know by the wisdom and understanding of faith, then we have “free will” we choose to accept or denounce that occupation of our mind–whatever our choice, it must be to give God Almighty, He who has selflessly loved us, the delight. Or else woe be unto us!

    • July 20, 2012

      Correction

      (1) God feeds our minds from conscience which directs the functions of our Spirit self–better known as Spiritual Laws–but by steadfast faith.

(2)We have got to stand with God by faith and trust that He might give us wisdom and to teach us discernment.

      (3) If Sherman Webb had that form of understanding, pertaining to what he was into;—-

      (4) We are either functioning by the Mind of Love—the renewed Mind, by our faith

looks like a foreigner’s life is more important than that of Dominica, right here in Dominica. Ossie was followed and killed a the young men who killed him are out enjoying their lives. The man who killed Julien was also released. So many murderers released in less than five years. This guy gets life foe killing a Bajan, ehbeh, as a Dominican our life really ain’t worth !

    • Mango-Bab
      July 20, 2012

It doh seems you can understand English. The murderer was given life, not for killing a Bajan… but for the circumstances. I expected the judge to have come out harder on him and his cult.

      • Justice and Truth
        July 21, 2012

        @ Mango-Bab

He was given a life sentence also for killing the Bajan. One could not go without the other. He murdered the man. Therefore, he had to be sentenced for murdering him and for what he did to him after he said he hit him and he died and he buried him. In fact, a few charges for also burying him which is desecrating him and not reporting it. It is like hiding the body. Consider the number of charges, the second was the murder. He directly caused his death.
Let us say, the first action he had to do was to murder him and the other actions followed. Where is your sense?

    • Justice and Truth
      July 21, 2012

      @ Rejahnni

This was previously. This one is today, in the present. Have you read the numerous comments on this Website and how Dominicans were angry and still are that some people received light sentences and others were acquitted?
Did you read what the Prime Minister stated about looking into this and probably changing the Law?
I have confidence that from now on, those criminals/murderers will not get off so easily and Scot Free and some to re-offend. If this takes effect, crimes (the types of crimes) and murders will be decreased in DA, if not practically eliminated and all of it. Dominica needs some stringent Laws. O Happy Day if this happens. Time will tell. Keep your eyes and ears opened.
Do your part. Even from a distance every one could do their part for the good of Dominica and its nationals. After all, those who reside abroad will always be visiting and would love to have a pleasant and safe visit in their homeland.
This also includes other visitors and those who invest in DA and are business owners, that they could conduct their affairs in peace and safety. The Law and the sentences really need to be revamped and as soon as possible. Pray for this.
I do believe those two sentences are the beginning. Thank God!

Of what use is he to society? Is he going to be rehabilitated? What if he kills in prison again? What if he escapes prison some day? Why does society have to bear this burden?

I was thinking, it should be hard labour. They should grow fruits and vegetables to sell for their keep. They could also learn a trade while in prison. They should be kept busy during the day.
I recall as a child the prisoners would be out with the Wardens supervising them, cleaning the streets and drains and also around government buildings. In those days they were petty criminals. I suppose today they cannot take that chance with them.
In those days a murder occurred once, every ten years, if never. When I was a student, there were two murders in DA until I left DA as an adult. They did not occur in the same year but a few years apart. The reasons for this were jealous boyfriend lovers who found out that their girlfriends were leaving DA for another country. Today, I am so saddened to hear and read about the many murders which occurred in DA. The majority who commit them are young men. I pray and hope there will be no more. God, please put a hand.

      @ teena

If you are referring to this man Sherman, he was given a life sentence. There is no mention of parole. Probably after some years, as an old man, if he lives that long, he may be granted a release especially for good behaviour and if he proved to be rehabilitated. Just my thoughts.
On the other hand if it were a death penalty there would be no chance for release since DA does not have the death penalty.
Teena, what he did to that young man is upsetting and hard to take. He murdered him by hitting him with a cutlass, desecrated his body and buried it. Imagine how that young man must have suffered prior to death.
He probably did not tell the truth. God knows the truth.
He could have raped him or they could have had relations. Then he struck him and buried him alive. The cards are stacked against him through his fault.
Imagine the man’s family and their feelings. I am certain that they are still inconsolable. They will always think of their loved one and the manner in which he died. It is like a life/death sentence for them. His family is also victims. They will constantly mourn his loss.
Life sentence is fitting for him as he deserves. He is fortunate that DA does not have the death penalty.

This is a case that is talked about all the time. Not long after the incident the shooter was going about life like nothing happened, on stage with the band etc. No conscience. Its a shame and there are so many other shocking cases, scary indeed!

Reasons why certain ppl get this punishment: they can’t pay off the judge,2. They are not friends with the judge, they are nobody in society, look at it, murder victims go on bail or set free after 3 years for same type of crime, don’t u think someone knows someone?

It’s ironic that this Sherman Webb would confess to the cops that he killed someone. A crime that no one knew about untill he told the cops about it. They persued the matter and now this man is convicted. Yet another guy confessed to the fire bombing of Mr. Emmanuel’s house and the cops dont believe that he did it. SHAME!

  56. Chief Justice
    July 20, 2012

Our system of justice should provide that once all avenues of appeal has been exhausted, this man file’s should only be opened for consideration on the grounds of mercy after 60 years, and never before. The Mercy committee should not be moved by any public out cry.

In another story on this site, one man who was the center of much public agitation and protestation for his release is now languishing on the streets of Newtown. His Rastafari brothers who went public with plans for him after his release have long abandoned him to society.
