A Roseau vagrant today asked the court for imprisonment or psychiatric help, providing that he gets daily meals.
William Lewis of Bath Road appeared before Magistrate Ossie Lewis at the Roseau Magistrate Court this morning and pleaded guilty to theft and tampering with a vehicle. He was sentenced to four months in jail, a sentence that the court decides is in his nutritional interest.
Reports are that on June 1, the defendant was seen by a security officer at Miniya’s 7-11, Pottersville branch, tampering with the vehicle of Decimer Tavernier. The complainant was in her office at the supermarket during the episode and later noticed that documents kept in her Jeep were in shambles and $50 EC missing.
The accused returned the following day to the location, where he was held by the security guards at the supermarket who called police.
“I took the money to buy food because I was hungry,” Lewis told police when he was questioned.
“Give me a break or send me up psychiatric,” the defendant responded to the magistrate when asked about his preferred sentence.
In handing down the sentence, Magistrate Lewis told the defendant that he was sending him to prison: “I will give you a little rest so you will not go around causing trouble.”
The defendant agreed and asked the court if he would be fed daily.
He will also have the right to request psychiatric help.
The defendant is known to the police. He was convicted in the past on several counts of thefts, vagrancy and malicious damage. He was not represented by a lawyer.

when i was a little girl and i was walking through the market william put his hand under my dress and touch up all my bottom and when i was about 13 i pass him by harra after school the man grab my breast…That is why they have to BOGGA him in jail i dont care what no one says to me…he too damn nasty…. You should have informed your parents and reported him to the Police. In so doing, after all those years, he could have eventually be a changed man.

I just heard on a U.S. Catholic Radio, “There is no such thing as a bad kid; just bad parenting, training, bad companionship, bad environment, etc.” In most cases this is correct. They surely need to be helped.
Those who are in need of food should not be denied it. There are those who are well-fed. They must be grateful to God for that. They should also consider the less fortunate ones. No one in the world should go without the basics of life, food, housing and clothing. There are times I do think that society has failed them.
We show our love, generosity and gratitude to God by helping of all the less fortunate, the poor in our society. They should not be ignored.
People of Dominica who are especially well-off should help the poor of Dominica. Too often many who reside abroad take it upon themselves to assist the unfortunate in Dominica.
Those who are abroad have many obligations to meet. They also help the poor in their environment and by contributing to non-charitable organizations.
Those who are practicing religious people also give alms to their churches which in turn help the poor in their environment and worldwide. They do contribute their fair share to society and to the world, to people of every status and those who experience all sorts of problem.
Some of those who reside abroad can barely make it due to family and other personal obligations. Yet they are willing to help and as much as they could. They are also taxpayers and are obligated to pay their fair share of taxes. They are not spared.
What are Dominican residents doing to help the poor, to offer them food, housing, clothing and counseling, each in their towns and villages and to make the lives of the poor better than they are presently in? I do realize that there are some who are assisting but not enough of them. When everyone come together and assist there is additional help in numbers.
They should not only depend on the government to assist. As Christians, they must be willing to do their part to assist the poor without counting the cost and time all for the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
God rewards all good deeds done willingly and cheerfully. Every Christian should be fully-conversant with Holy Scriptures specifically the Words and Teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
It may be time to assist those vagrants to get off the streets, out of prison, be rehabilitated, be well-fed, housed and clothed. They have been ignored for too long.
Let us not offer criticisms. The Dominican needy are in dire need of help. God hears the cry of the poor.
Mother – Blessed Teresa of Calcutta said, “Never let others go hungry and be lonely.” She was a good example and one to be emulated.

Liverpool (the Scoutmaster) has a rehab at the Scout headquarters next to the cemetery and I think if those in authourity would take a second look at that man and what he is doing they would learn a lot about how to go about dealing with those crack fellas. That man is not being assisted and he runs a free rehab. I had a relative of mine by him and he was doing so well until he felt that he did not like the discipline. He is now back on the alcohol and crack. I think Government should give that man some support. That man does not stick nonesense at his place, that is why those who not serious leave go back to the drugs. Those who stay always make their people feel proud (like Taggy). I use to be a scout and I know him to be a hard disciplinarian. I also know that he was a paro himself and he use use to drink . Now what he is doing free of charge, is what Government should be doing to help society.

This a waste of tax payers time and money. William is a known vagrant and phychiatric patient, HE IS MENTALLY ILL, and you know that.
Sending William to jail will have only two outcome, yes he will be fed daily but as he has confessed the last time i saw him at the prision, HE WILL BE SODOMIZED. That is a repeated act commited against William at the prison.
About 2 years ago, William stole a can drink and some change, all NOT COSTING more than $10 dollars and he was jailed.
