UPDATE: Woman robbed and beaten at gunpoint in Calibishie

The police have confirmed a woman was robbed over the weekend in Calibishie.

DNO understands that the victim is an American citizen who has been living in Dominica for the past nine years.

A source close to the individual told DNO that the woman was beaten with a cutlass and held at gunpoint by two masked men.

Reports are that the victim has since returned to the US to recuperate because she feared for her life.

DNO has been reliably informed that residents of Calibishie  are living in fear because of the rise in criminal activity there and the fact that no one has been apprehended.

Investigations into this matter continue.

  1. Missing Calibishie
    September 13, 2013

Fifteen years ago i had an experience when i was leaving in Calibishie where a gentleman (not really) came into my home at night and i know that his intention was to rape me thank God i was able to escape. But that was that persons second attempt the first time my siblings and i scared him away because he thought we were asleep the second time they were i was not but i was scared so i kept quiet.I said this to say nothing like that had never happened before until a particular person had just moved into Calibishie hired to work at first they were just commuting and then they finally just made Calibishie home. They had frequented my home before that is why they were able to come straight to my bedroom in the dark and stand over me where i was sleeping on the floor . That person had to have seen my parents on the bayside and knew that my siblings and i were home alone. My parents confronted him the next day because they knew no one else could have done this but him. He denied it (off course) but it never happened again after he had attempted two times . Mind you my parents did theaten him, to cut his balls off and all.Not to say that it is not possible for a calibishean to be the ones raping and stealing but i highly doubt it it is usually always an outsider. Calibishieans better start uniting and keeping close eyes on these strangers that are infesting our little paradise.I bet you if they would come together and give one of them a good old fashion beating the rest would get the message.

I wish that I be a consultant for your police force, I been a officer for.21 years in the USA and yes crime is everywhere but one thing that we do is catch our criminals and throw in jail for a very long time, we don’t give up until we.catch them…..citizens of Dominica stick togetherset up a town watch report crimes an watch your neighbors back…..I would love to retire in Dominica, I’m not afraid of.thugs they are afraid of me….God Bless you all

Criminals operate in Dominica with no fear due to the lax police investigations, and even laxer law courts they know that they will either get away scot-free or the case will never be called or that even if they kill or rape someone they will not be adequately punished and will soon be free to rape or kill again soon. The Prime Minister and the Judiciary should be ashamed of themselves because they fail to permanently remove these negative elements of Dominican Society by killing those who kill or rape. I am now ashamed to be called Dominican and too afraid to return home for fear of crime being committed against me or my family. Soon all that will be left in Dominica are the criminals and their victims. Well done Mr Skerrit and Judiciary.

They got rid of Behanzin because they thought he was becoming too popular and might have had a better shot at prime ministership than the incumbent….this is just the price that is being paid for one man to remain as prime minister.

Please come to your senses and go to the authorities with your suspicions….soon, everyone in the town will live in fear. God help you.

The last few governments have not been interested in fighting crime. For the last 15 years the incidents against tourist were dismissed casually as “isolated incidents” even when they were happening on a regular basis. This was when tourism was not a big part of our economy and the government wasn’t worrying about losing votes over a few tourists getting robbed, mugged etc.
Now, as was predicted, things are out of hand, moving into the local community as well, and neither the police force nor the government are prepared or have the capability to deal with it.
The governments answer seems to be “throw money at it” as if that alone will help. All the new phones, vehicles and toys in the world are not going to produce a strong, aware and intelligent police force.
Start at the top and bring in specialized training for the police. Bring in someone to help Mr. Cadette as well as the situation seems to be getting away from him at a most alarming pace.
Accept the fact that the police force does NOT have the experience or training to deal with the criminals they are now up against. A lot of these guys have been away learning their craft from the master thieves, etc. in foreign countries. Most of our police have not been given the same opportunity to learn and can not be expected to compete on the same level. Leave your pride at the door as all you are doing is putting the community that are you are supposed to be protecting at risk because you are all too proud to ask for outside help.
We ask for technical and physical help to build roads, ports, government mansions, hospitals, cricket stadiums, etc. so why are we so ashamed to say that we need help to allow our police force to perform adequately? Other countries do this all the time. Is it a macho kind of thing to say we don’t need to learn from anyone else ? If so the women of Dominica need to start raising their voices in protest as they seem to be the ones that are most affected by it all..
We deserve better from the people in authority and it is time that we use our collective power to demand that proper steps are taken to combat this growing problem.
Yes, the community can, and should, play their part in combating crime but they should not have to take the leading role .

A friend of the victim just told me she was raped and tortured by two masked men. Apparently, in contradiction to this article, she did not return to the USA just to recuperate – she left for good and will never return to Dominica. How bad do things have to become before the authorities start doing their job?

      Simply amazing, somebody clicked dislike?

I’m reading post after post after post blaming the police and the government. Typical head in the sand blame somebody else. For you that live in Calibishie, most of you know exactly who’s stealing and committing other crimes. This culture of protecting each other is going to result in nothing but more hardship for everybody.

What industry does Dominica have left other than tourism? Beat up, rape, steal, murder tourists and expats and what do you think will happen then? Think China and Venezuela will save you? Do you really want Dominica to be known as nothing better than an island populated by inner city type thugs equal to some of the worst in the US?

What do you think happens when these people go back to the States or Europe? Is everybody too stupid around here to even imagine the tremendous damage done to Dominica over the French girl’s rape at Batibou? What about Rick and Alisha? Does anybody with the common sense of a sand crab realize these people talk, the press picks up on it and then others won’t come?

The police cannot do everything. The community MUST step up and help. Even the finest law enforcement organizations in the world are helpless in silence. You want to get mad then look in the mirror for the person to get mad at. In the end only the people can effect change, nobody else. You want a warm, loving people on a beautiful tropical island then do something to earn it. Otherwise Dominica will earn a reputation as a dangerous place with people that could care less. Everybody will be much poorer and unhappy. What a sad future for our children.

There have been an increase in robberies in DA,but specifically in the Calibishie surrounding areas, but we have yet to see a Police presence in these areas of interests.
Theses Police Officers should put down the box of dominos and stop cooking broth all day, and go out and patrol in an effort to deter loitering criminals.

There is NOTHING wrong with Dominica or Calibishie. It is the BAD PEOPLE who actually are the problem. The island and villages are gorgeous and perfect, the rats who create problems need to be weeded out and reprimanded. PLEASE allow me to be Police Chief for ONE month. I promise to be good….

Government of Dominica needs its own spy agency to hunt and kill these criminals. Jail is not for them, yes a government hit squad provided immunity from prosecution to kill these people. Find them its easy, tap their phone numbers, fingerprint them nd match it to a database we can setup. Dominica police are a joke, Crime is national security and should be treated as an attack against the state. Rapist, thieves & murders, arms & drug deals must be hunted and killed. America kills terrorist, we have our own so treat them as such. we don’t have to go to Iraq & Afghanistan to find them they are here in our paradise hiding. Hunt them down with a vengence covertly. If we need CIA help to hunt ppl down then get the help we need. Dominica is becoming like Somalia.

No one condones what these lazy criminals have done. It could have been done to a Dominican as well and we all would have been just as disgusted with it as we are now. However, to imply that this sort of crime is unheard of in the US is absolutely ridiculous and to suggest that Dominican livelihood is dependent on you is pure ignorance. Dominica welcomes visitors and we welcome foreigners among us and we are all disheartened that this horrible thing was done and we hope the perpetrators are caught and thrown in prison for a very long time.

First I must express empathy to this woman. Hope that she is able to recuperate and get the justice she deserves. To her family hold strong and know that we Dominicans hold you dear to us and we will keep you in our prayers. She is Dominican (naturalized) and what affects one Dominican affects all Dominicans.

It is disheartening to read this yet we can all be part of the solution. We can petition the government to implement stricter laws for dealing with criminals, amending the old laws which appear ineffective. I hope by now we have a crisis hotline/unanimous hotline number up and running so that citizens can “say something when they see something” without fear of being targeted. If people are living in fear the government has a civic responsibility to abate that fear. It appears currently that the country is devoid of structure and as such chaos pervades the land. What happened to the secret police? It’s time for us to recruit, train and allow interested and qualified individuals to be employed in this capacity to fight crime.

Some will say the government cannot do everything. Indeed, but the government in response to the people’s cries can put the appropriate legislators at the helm in identified areas. I say this to say that in response to the upsurgence of criminal activity we need a firm hand. If we can find that individual dedicated to take on the charge then we need to put him or her at the helm now. If not I say let’s restore Tiyani B. to the helm. He tackled crime aggressively and as such criminal activity was no where as high as it is today. Yes he erred, but to err is human and to forgive divine. Can we not see past the length our nose to see that this man’s record for fighting crime speaks for its self. Look at those he dealt with versus ones overturned (they ended up dead.)I would go further to look at his work in community rehabilitation of those involved in criminal activity (e.g the case of the two men from Wesley who were feuding with each other for years. He assisted them in moving PST that. A telling story.) He has vision which we can capitalize on. He could have a positive impact on other magistrates in the criminal court, on our communities and by extension our country. Call a spade a spade this man did a damn good job with safety and peace of mind of Dominicans at heart. I am confident if we put safety of our law abiding citizens first, restore Tiyani to the helm criminal activity will drop drastically. For once let common sense prevail!

The villagers of Calibishie have to take some responsibility for what is happening in their community.
Because there is no way all these crimes are taking place there and no one knows who or have an idea where these criminals are coming from.
A joint communal action plan has to be put in place to tackle these ills in the society.
Calibishie could be turned into resort towns like Monuntigo Bay and Orchy in Jamaica. But it have to take the locals to set-up such movements.

  26. What the?
    April 26, 2012

    Just to clarify something here.

White is not the issue … tourism is not the issue. Poverty is not the issue.

What IS the issue is that ALL women here black and white in DA are being abused by DA men … every day and night. By strangers, family and … ‘friends’.

It is time to stop this. Men seem to think that women are a different species or something.

You are not a man if you rape you are a coward.

Let men tell THIS to each other.

Every where the US is fighting it’s drug war is having a huge surge in violent crime.
Q.Why is Dominica fighting in this war that is not on US soil?
    A.Money.
I thought Dom didn’t jump to that master!

Look to Mexico.See our possible future.

In many US states smoking marijuana is legal. In other states the fastest growing business is medical use marijuana.
US has no civil war on marijuana. Dom gov is being paid to prevent any other supply taking business from US suppliers.

Our country is being smashed to protect the US. While they put their feet on their big shinny desk smoking a legal joint laughing all the way to the bank.

Just imagine if all Dominicans took responsibility for the safety of every visitor/tourist.
Imagine if their visit was safe, and the locals were friendly, courteous, helpful, looking out for them.
We would stand out in the Caribbean. This reputation would spread overseas and we would all gain from expanding tourism spending.
We need an emergency, non-partisan summit that all can rally around. We need all community leaders, including all political representatives, the media, religious leaders, business leaders, calypsonians, etc. to rally around a multi-faceted action plan.
It will take time to turn attitudes around and for our reputation to spread. But it would bring long term jobs, more social cohesion, and greater security for everyone.

My daughter and I visited Dominica some years ago, and we stayed in Calibishie. The people there were so nice to us. I know a lot of them open up their homes and rent out rooms to tourists. It must be serious blow to their economy, and the whole Island when things are getting so out of hand. It is serious when people are afraid to go there. My thoughts are also going to the victim. To be fair you have misunderstood what the person stated. Consider, when they get home at nights and also on the weekends, they could be viewing TV, as well as the days they are indoors. It is the type of programs that they view and which they love viewing and look forward to viewing. They get a certain excitement viewing them; nothing educational, inspiring and uplifting that they could intelligently discuss with others.
You know what is shown on TV these days. Many people as I agree that “there is nothing on TV” or very little. Meaning, nothing worthwhile viewing.
I reside abroad. While I am typing this, there is a TV program on diabetes and obesity on WNED/PBS which transmits via Buffalo, N.Y. This is an excellent TV Channel.
My favourite programs are the News and certain programs as Market Place pertaining to businesses and consumers; other programs as 60 Minutes, 20/20 and also other relevant Canadian programs and re-broadcasts of some great comedies of some years ago which I used to enjoy. These days the comedies are not as entertaining and family wise as they were in previous years.
Some TV Stations air programs and movies and state, “viewer discretion advised.” Why would I want to watch such a program/movie? However, these things have their people. Some people love viewing them, hearing swear language, seeing fighting, shootings and killings. Some of those programs teach people how to break and enter a building, how to steal and how to injure and murder them. If this is all that they view, then they will learn nothing good which is why they end up committing crimes.
There is not one person I have had relevant conversations with who disagree that TV has changed the world and spoilt some people. This is what we get for it, crimes/murders in Dominica and elsewhere in the world and with increased godlessness. We must face the facts. I am further stating, woe to those who are primarily involved in them and who contaminate the world, especially the children/youth. As God sees, looks on and is taking note, one day they will be answerable to God. He will hold them accountable for what they have done to the minds of especially the youth. As Christians, on this basis, everyone should agree. Sorry! I could not make it shorter. God enlightens and prompts.

Under no condition should anyone endorse criminal activities and encourage them. There are many people, not only in Dominica but elsewhere in the world who are unemployed (unable to obtain a job) and some are poor. They do not go about creating havoc in the land, being a menace to society, robbing, beating and injuring people and being lawless.
If you have any sense in your head and are a Christian, a practicing one at that and a law-abiding person you should know better than to make such a statement. God does not condone sin of any nature. There is a price to pay for sin and criminal activities.

Non Sense. What did your grand parents do? They worked the land. So much land in Dominica to work. So much business opportunities in Dominica?

There is so much that can be done. Stop seating on your laurels.
Get up and create your own employment. You are a citizen of the WORLD. If Dominica is not working for you, move else where, but don’t take from others who found a way to better themselves.

Our people need to develop mentally.

” O dear, this is terrible news. Almost for certain now our friends will rethink thier plans to come and live and open a buisness in Dominica. It has taken us a long time to convince them they are safe, after all the previous reports of muggins, beatings, robbery, rape and killings. We also know of other people who are quietly selling up, and moving on because the island where they once felt welcomed and safe is no longer. How sad.

I hate to say it, but you are 100% correct. I still come up to this website, just in the hopes Dominica gets the direction changed from Crime-101 to Safe-101, and it appears to be getting worse. Such a beautiful island, I had a few of my business partners, and a couple of other investors all set up to build a 1st class resort in Marigot, which would be good jobs in building the facility, then people working in it once built. We regretfully pulled the plug on the project, as it is just tooo unsafe! Who would come with all these ONGOING VIOLENT CRIMES? What a waste of a beautiful island. I have said it before, if Dominica wants to improve, RAT out your violent neighbour, nothing will ever change, unless the people speak up!! Not everything can be blamed on the police, they are not the scum beating people near death, over literally NOTHING! Disgusting and repulsive. There are over 70,000 people on this island, that is a lot of eyes, please use them, WORK TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY! Then and ONLY then will this crime start to reduce. I will have to mention, IT WILL GET WORSE, before it gets better as NOBODY IS WORKING TOGETHER. Your revenue streams are depleting, tourists don’t go on vacation to get beaten near death, people go on vacation to relax, have a good time and meet NICE and fun people. WAKE UP DOMINICA, time to toss the TRASH towards the Prison! I know there is a LOT of good people on the island, but lets face it, the dirty dozen are destroying the island for everyone, are you going to let these scum buckets destroy your island? Speak up, speak out, help your nation recover, please.

The question is what is really being done to fight crime in Dominica, so much has happened in the Calibishie area, have you seen any changes in terms of presence of law enforcement in the area? where is the police, secret service, sting operation or some serious plan to protect our tourist, and local residents. trust me I am from Calibishie and in the mist of all this, nothing serious is done. Where is our pal-rep? Where are our leaders. Calibishie need help, we are in serious trouble right now. send a bus-load of police officers, patrol the streets, let these criminals see the police with guns hanging, ready to use and trust me things will change. desperate times calls for desperat measures. Calibishie used to be the place that people from outside Dominica wanted to live. It is close to the airport and beautiful. The land prices rocketed but now the land is not worth very much. There are a lot of homes on the market now which are owned mainly by outsiders. They will find it extremely difficult to sell their properties! They are not likely to get anywhere near the money that they paid for the homes to be built if they can sell at all! It is very, very, sad as most people who move here do so because of Dominica being a friendly beautiful place to live! It only takes a few bad apples that spoil everything for everybody. The families of these criminals must know who they are it is time that those people stood up against the crime and turned the criminals in. Dominica is beautiful and people who have saved hard all their lives to retire here should be allowed to do so in peace! The few Dominicans are ruining Dominica with their crime. This is the age of technology, Twitter, Facebook and other social websites news spreads fast. This is a tragedy and I feel so very sad for the lady in question. The trauma that she has gone through will probably affect her psychologically for the rest of her life! What punishment for the criminals is bad enough for the harm they have done to her and if not stopped will do again. How would they feel if it was them or their loved one’s that had had this crime done to them!! Enough this has to stop.

Rape is a act of anger and cowardice. Rape is a terrible crime against womanhood. No women ever does anything to deserve such brutality. This women was not a tourist she lived here for 9 years and had built a lovely little house on a farm track above Calibishie. You would have had to go out of your way to find her in the afternoon at her home. Whoever did this to her knew the area, knew she lived alone and knew that they could invade her home in broad daylight because they knew no one was around. April 26, 2012

Where I see she was raped?
She is my friend. She told me her story. She showed me her wounds.
So if the police don’t report this it didn’t happen?
How many rapes have been in the press this year?
        How many prosecutions for rape?

Stop blaming the victims, jobs, poverty & what else.
BLAME THE RAPISTS. BLAME THE MUGGERS. BLAME THE CRIMINALS.

This kind of news does wonders for the tourism industry which is already not great. They need to quit teaching racism in DA. Nobody gets to choose their skin color. The whole thing was never about race, only greedy people that sell out others and that has been going on since the beginning of time.

    • Sigh

Man, don’t say that. How many people do you have in Dominica compared to the US. It is something called persentage. Compared to the amount of people living in Dominica ( About 70000 )the crime rate is high. And how many incidents only in
Calibishie with a population of around 500 Wake up man.

Dominica must ask for help from the US to investigate and apprehend these culprits and bring them to justice. This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated.

      April 25, 2012

We don’t need help from any one else. We need to increase our expectations from our police force. Police live in the station and do nothing. They use the Govt to “Run woman” and the phone to “chat to woman”

It is time that our officers are expected to roam the streets in uniform, do some work and show some presences in the community.

I would propose that a Police Vehicle should never be driven by a Police without Unform. They Should always be a uniformed officer on Duty.

If the Police Force continue to do the same old things, we can’t expect to see any results.

Listen to you – no food no jobs!

You are better than many of us in foreign – you can live off the land – you won’t starve in D.A… you can plant your own food, your neighbour can assist you.

No job – why don’t you learn a trade – teach youself something. Learn to fish – become a fisher man and sell your fish.

Learn to paint – become a painter and advertise your services.

Learn to farm – become a farmer and walk around and sell your produce.

You don’t need no “big” job to survive. You can make it if you apply yourself.

Dominica has many opportunities to survive – some of us just choose the excuse of the government, or the life of crime to justify our actions and lack there off

why get mad ad shatta for speaking the truth. every where around the world where there is a high amount of young men with no jobs and few job prospects you have increases in crime. there are so many painters carpenters etc who can work in dominica so saying just get a trade is not the answer. just like its not the answer everywhere else around the world. whats sad is with the advent of the internet i fear things will only get worst because poor youth who once were not exposed to extreme wealth they can never get legally see it non stop on the internet and start thinking of illegal ways to get it. =(

      • What the?
        April 26, 2012

There were jobs in Calibishie from all that construction …. that USED to go on.

Nobody should be even trying to defend or look into the reasons … except to say that a certain amount of Dominicans prefer to steal and beat and rape than work.

At the moment right now … that Morrocan hotel is looking for 20 plus guys. STILL looking … meanwhile I see the young guys skulking in corners selling drugs.

You tellin me that they WANT to work? You tellin me that the guys that rapes beat and stole from this lady would prefer to work?

  85. Sam Harris
    April 25, 2012

He had not yet been informed of the incident when contacted–well, that’s the problem right there, isn’t it? This primitive and pathetic system of law enforcement takes too long to learn of crimes, takes too long to do something when they finally learn of a crime, do something but often not something that leads to anyone being apprehended, and then a new case appears and the police, like some of the public, would seem to “forget” the old cases occurred.

You remember not too long ago there was an announcement the police were just being equipped with individual phones or something like that? How are basic things like this now alone happening? Is this a more tropical version of the Wild West?

I know the police have a lot of work to do, but come on….

    • What the?
      April 25, 2012

Well, the problem is that NOBODY has confidence in the police there in Calibishie.

I KNOW they should report it … but who can really blame them for not wanting to make the policeman horny as he drools over her rape story.

That police there need a good kick.

      • MysticalM
        April 25, 2012

The question is how many police are actually stationed in Calibishe? I understand that at any one time there are 4 officers, two on duty while 2 are off duty. If one is manning the desk then you only have one officer to facilitate any crime occurance.

It’s not the police that is the problem, it’s the management system that is screwing up the CDPF.

  86. Power Less
    April 25, 2012

I am sorry but I don’t see this trend changing or turning around , the citizens are unable to protect themselves because of the same laws that the criminals take advantage of , they carry guns and machetes(cutlasses) and we are powerless at their attacks , we can’t even carry pepper spray because one has to get a permit for that simple self defense tool , the officials need to understand that the citizens has to protect themselves , I can bet if the perpetrators know that citizens are protecting themselves they would think three times before even attacking an elderly person on the streets .

  87. April 25, 2012

our community must come together and get rid of these criminials.they are distroying our communities.
