CSEC results indicates an upward trend in almost all areas – Fontaine

Fontaine (2nd from left) said students surpassed regional average in 31 out of 33 subjects they sat

Chief Education Office, Melena Fontaine has revealed that this year the analysis of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations results of Dominican students indicates an upward trend in almost all areas.

She was speaking at a press conference held at the Financial Centre on Wednesday.

“Through their efforts I am now able to report to you that this year our analysis of the CSEC results indicates an upward trend in almost all areas,” she said. “We saw increases in the overall percentage pass and in Language and Mathematics, two very critical subjects’ areas which we monitor very closely.”

According Fontaine, more students passed five or more subjects including English and Mathematics.

“We had more subject passes at 80 percent and above and our students surpassed the regional average in 31 out of the 33 subjects that they sat,” she explained.

Fontaine went on to say that schools like the Convent High School with a pass rate of 97 percent and St John’s Academy with a pass rate of 95 percent, continued on their excellent path.

“And we commend them for remaining there and we were happy to see that 11 of the 15 schools showed increases in their percentage pass rate,” she stated.

She made special mention of Dominica Community High School with an increase of 13 percentage points, St Martin Secondary School with 12, Dominica Grammar School with 9 and Arthur Waldron Seventh Day Adventist School with an increase of 8 percentage points.

“Other schools that have increased their percentage pass rate are the Castle Bruce Secondary, North East Comprehensive, Portsmouth Secondary and Pierre Charles Secondary,” Fontaine noted.

She also singled out the Wesley High School which has been steadily increasing its percentage pass rate over the past 5 years, “moving from a low of 54.2 percent in 2014 to a present high of 78.9 percent.”

“They had 100 percent pass rate in 7 subjects,” Fontaine revealed.

She urged the Wesley High School to continue that upward trend and make their school a force to be reckoned with.

The Ministry of Education also celebrated with the group of students who were successful in the CVQ Programme.

“All 6 students of the Goodwill Secondary School who registered successfully completed the CVQ level 1 in Garment Production and will receive their CVQ award from CXC,” Fontaine said.

She added, “We also want to celebrate with St Martin Secondary School for obtaining 100 percent past rate in both English and Mathematics, and Dominica Community High School 100 percent pass rate in English at the CCSLC [Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competenceexaminations.”

Fontaine mentioned further that the Ministry of Education will continue to examine and employ the strategies that are contributing to the improvement that is producing those positive results.

The CSEC Examination administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC ) is the secondary school exit examination for our students in Dominica and the rest of the Caribbean.

It is also the student’s entry into further education for the job market whichever path they choose to follow.

After Ralph Gonsalves tricked us and took our international Airport from us, he had the guts to tell us is not Skerrit fault Ross left. Ralph whose fault, yours? Had he not allow you to trick him and took our airport Ross would not have left us man. We in Dominica are too damn slack man; we should be putting pressure on these Caribbean leaders that tricking our little boy prime minister and take everything from us. You know what St. Vincent gave Skerrit for our airport? Three damn Baily bridge on the west coast and one is gone already. Skerrit on the other hand telling us Ross left because of Erica and Maria and we should not blame them because it’s a business decision, we should not blame Mia Mottley and his opperatives here telling us we should not blame Skerrit. So who to blame? You renewed secret agreement with Ross 3 years ago which ended after 3 years and you can’t sue them for breach of contract? What are you afraid of Skerrit’? You want to tell us what we getting ?

I am fed up with Skerrit’s propaganda. Good for all the students but I will not Petter Saint Jean as minister of Education hide behind CSEC while he says nothing about a damn University we lost, that created employment for over a hundred nationals, not including those who had their little shack, bar, restaurants, landlord’s that had at least another 100 employed only to find out that policies of Skerrit’ and his DLP government caused Ross to go. This thing hurts me man and I am even more hurt to see DNO said nothing about I today as if to suggest is another too show to flam thing. Imagine we list a university because Skerrit and his DLP FAILED to build an international airport that the previous uwp administration bought land for and, to add insult to Injury, the brought down pM of St Vincent to Portsmouth to tell us we can’t afford an international airport only to go back to St. Vincent and build one in St Vincent, through the same funds Tiwan offered us. That hurts boy

      Possie Direct,
Personally I have never been to medical school but I think it is some kind of illness that every issue, topic or matter has to come back to some hate talk about Skerrit.

I bet he brought hurricane Maria too and all the fall out from that. I really cannot wait for him to go and for whoever to come. I just hope they can take it when the shoes change feet.

Congratulations to all students who excelled at the CSEC examinations. Special recognition should be given to the Portsmouth Secondary School student who emerged # one on the list. The Portsmouth Secondary School is and will continue to be one of the best Secondary Schools in Dominica, yet every year they seem to be marginalized inspite of their outstanding performance in academics, sports and other areas. Let me highlight the Principal, and the dedicated teachers, who work tirelessly to ensure that the students at the Portsmouth Secondary School excel. Mr Austrie has done wonders for PSS. I suppose that it is not a Roseau School that obtained the #1 position. The media houses should think about the option of additional training for their reporters. Although I suppose they report on what is presented to them.

What is St. Jean doing in picture? Where has he been? How could Dominica lose a university and we never heard a thing from the minister of education and the minister of health since it was a medical school? Is it further communication that Dominica has a one man government, who is the minister of everything, though a big failure in everything?

Good for the image of Possie especially after the Skerrit and his Bajan advisors led departure of Ross .University. But as much as this is some good news yet, it cannot replace the 1200 Ross students we lost and the hundreds of apartments Hurricane Skerrit cause to be on lockdown today. No matter what they try to have us talk about, the reason for Ross University will not depart from our conversation

Congratulations to students, their support system and to Dominica on a whole.
It almost appear that the performance improved the year following major storms. It is great to see chemistry, physics and biology are top performing subjects. It used to be different years back. Mathematics is improving but is still low. I am wondering if some type of mentoring program should be developed and implemented to further increase the pass rate. I am open to helping via Skype and the likes since i don’t reside in Dominica, currently.

How wonderful, in spite of Hurricane Maria.

Congratulations to students, parents, teachers, schools, Ministry of Education officials and all who contributed to this success.

Let us continue to strive to succeed in spite of the challenges.
