Alisha Laurent-Smart is Miss Wob UK™ 2016, while, Shadae Sidora Henry representing Grandbay captured Ti Matador UK™ 2016 title.
The event took place at the Dominica High Commission in London on October 1 and was hosted by the Waitukubuli Culture & Tourism Initiative (WCTI). It is the organization’s signature youth event and was held for the third year.
This initiative founded by Dr Violet V Cuffy has at its core the overall objective of creating an increased awareness of the Dominica creole culture and heritage and the diaspora youth resident in the United Kingdom.
The 2016/17 executive committee are Dr violet V Cuffy (Chair), Brenda Mark-Osbourne (Secretary), Joshua Moses (Treasurer), Isobel Joseph (PRO & Membership), Esther Fadelle-Morris (Immediate Past Chair).
Seven young ladies participated in the event and the show included three rounds: Casual Wear, National Wear and Creole Heritage and general knowledge question and answer segment.
The Miss Wob 1st Runner Up went to Ria Laurent-Hughes, with all the other contestants being recognised for embracing their Dominica heritage and culture.
The Parade of Creole Fashion line was designed and made by Jennifer Laurent-Smart; with guest performances from Soca Johnny, Elsa Daisy (singer), Caribbean Quadrille Dancers and Sylvia Henderson (creole story).
Part sponsors for the Show included the Dominica High Commission, Dominica Secondary Schools Supporters Association (DASSSA), Caribbean Quadrille Dancers, BQuavs Photography, Papillote Press, and other individual well-wishers.
Judges for the event were Ursula Johnson, Ben Gordon and Joan Francis. Mistresses of Ceremony/Hostesses were Levie Beaupierre and Sylvia Smith; Music by DJVern.
The event was hosted by the Dominica High Commission as the first event for the UK Independence celebrations for 2016.
