A DVD and book highlighting aspects of Dominica’s culture have been launched.
Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence described the items as “useful.”
The DVD highlights some of the island’s traditional dances while the book contains a collection of photos shot in Dominica from the early 1900’s to the 1980’s.
“The DVD is meant to be enjoyed and at the same time is a very useful tool for groups and persons who want to learn the traditional dances of Dominica. It also serves as great promotion and preservation for Dominica’s traditional dances,” Lawrence said, during the launch of DOMFESTA on Wednesday.
The DVD features the Petite Savanne Cultural Group, Capuchin Cultural Group, Tradibelle, and the Portsmouth Jing Ping Band.
Lawrence noted that the folk dances are a vital and integral part of the heritage of Dominica and give meaning to everyday life. The DVD is the latest in a series of documentation efforts by the Cultural Division and the National Cultural Committee to further preserve and promote the creole culture in Dominica.
The book, which is in its second volume, is called “Heritage Dominica.”
“Through the years the Cultural Division has been able to collect old photographs of Dominican life, people, buildings, streets and landscapes. The photographs in this book cover a time frame from around early 1900’s to the 1980’s,” Lawrence stated.
He pointed out further that the book will help in the essential compilation and documentation of some interesting aspects of Dominica’s history and allows easy access to interested persons to experience glimpses of the past.
