Calabash Exhibition opens at Old Mill Cultural Centre (SEE PHOTOS)

An exhibition of craft products made from calabash opened at the Old Mill Cultural Centre last Monday evening.

The exhibition features items from craft producers in Dominica and is organized by the Cultural Division as part of DOMFESTA celebrations.

According to Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence, the exhibition is aimed at “showcasing the various uses of the calabash and highlighting the creative and innovative ways in which our craft producers in Dominica can use the calabash to create useful and interesting pieces of work”.

The exhibition also serves to encourage craft producers to see the calabash as a craft resource that can be used to create beautiful works of art and craft.

“The exhibits on display are quite impressive,” Lawrence noted, “because it shows the calabash as a receptacle, as an ornamental work of art, as wall hangings, as a musical instrument, as bird feeders among other things. It speaks to the versatility and talent of our artists and craft producers.”

Lawrence is encouraging as many persons as possible to view the exhibition which runs from May 9 – 20, 2011.
