Dominicans encouraged to use country’s flag to brand Carnival 2016

Cuffy-Jno Jules said there is no brand as it relates to Carnival

Products Promotions Manager of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Kathleen Cuffy- Jno Jules has called for more use of the Dominican flag during Carnival 2016 as a form of branding the event.

Cuffy- Jno Jules said on Wednesday said that the island’s Carnival does not have a brand but plans are underway to address that issue.

“We have basically no type of branding as it relates to Carnival,” she said. “We need to have some kind of branding for Carnival, Dominica’s Carnival ‘the Real Mas’.”

According to her, certain pictures are posted of Dominica’s Carnival but no identification is seen.

Hence, she is encouraging the public to use the flag of Dominica during Carnival as a way of creating a brand for the event.

“So what we are doing we are trying to encourage everyone, the public, persons forming bands, floats, costumes, costume bands to have a Dominica flag placed on the trucks, where they can be visible particularly as it relates to being captured by the camera,” Cuffy-Jno Jules explained. “At the end of the day a picture of Dominica Carnival is seen out there and we know that there is some identification that it is the original Carnival.”

She also encouraged retail shop owners to display Dominican flags so they can be purchased by the public.

    Thinking people are appalled!

Carnival is a celebration of emancipation from slavery :?:

It is an insult to the godly people of Dominica who would like it to show the vibrant moral bastion the nation has become and how well the people have done since they gained their freedom.

Instead of a celebration of freedom carnival is a declaration of bondage; another kind of bondage.
It show that many are in bondage to Satan the god of this world, and are slaves to sin. Jesus said ”The person men are in bondage to is the one whose slaves they are.” Those who are bound by cigarettes, rum,
drugs, lust, pornography, and fornication, are slaves of the devil. Those trapped in sin need deliverance.

This is also true in Canada. The people need to be told that Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God will break the chains of sin and give them freedom if they will surrender to Him.

This is the true emancipation! This is something to celebrate!

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill…

Allu Dominicans too bias and forget too quickly when it is those you are in favour of. How does she still have this job after what happened in America? Tell me this is not a valid comment.

OMG!!! how do these people even get their jobs. who papa Jesus hires these people. Our carnival does not need a ‘brand’. The brand should already be ‘the real mas’ if it isn’t already. What we need to do is MARKET MARKET MARKET. do a google image search for Trinidad Carnival. besides the obvious pictures where u can see the words trinidad and tobago carnival or some ‘band’ which used the country’s colors do you see any branding? no. look at st lucia carnival google search. any branding there? NO. the reason these countries are so popular is because of MARKETING. if you do a normal google search for Trinidad carnival a Wikipedia page comes up plus a host of other sites. Do one for Lucia they have a whole website dedicated to it. Dominica in comparison has an outdated site. GET REAL!!! MARKET MARKET MARKET!!!

too long didn’t read short version

MARKET MARKET MARKET!!! SELL SELL SELL

To adopt the Nation’s flag to identify carnival as belonging to Dominica, in other words to tell the world that carnival is a representation of what Dominica is, obviously would have some implications.

Officially it would be saying that the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica approves carnival. I am not a lawyer but it seems to me that this could make the government responsible for anything that happens out of the way during the festivities.

There are people in Dominica who do not appreciate carnival and do not want to be identified with the
drunkenness, lewdness, and immorality that the festivities generate. It does not seem fair to them that carnival should be promoted as a national project – something belonging to Dominica – when in reality it represents the interests of a percentage of Dominicans quite different than themselves.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

With all due respect, I don’t think the National Flag should be used to label or promote carnival. It is my humble view that there are factions in society who would debase the vulue and respect for the National Flag during their revelling. Independence Yes! This idea need deeper and thorough thinking on a notional scale. We have a lot of history to refer to therefore as a nation I am sure we can come up with a brilliant level for our carnival depicting our diverse culture and rich heritage

I can see my dad turning in his grave for someone to defy protocol to call for the use of the state flag to be used to identify carnival. What of all those intetesting Dominica logos that popped up after Erica. My dad was a respected statesman who would never stand for the dececration of the flag.I remember when he visited me before his death and found a flag I had bought in miami at my home and pointed out to me that this was not an authentic flag as the parrot was facing the wrong way.He sent me a real Dominica flag in his return.

    Clean UP Campaign!!

You know something, it’s not that we Dominicans do not want better. Or that we want to diss people’s ideas… But come on man, at this level when we hear these kinds of ‘big ideas 8-O ” it just frustrates! No innovation, no nothing new. It is just frustrating.
As a Dominican I am more concerned about the filthy streets stinking of pee and loaded with garbage for dayzzz following carnival, especially when tourists are around. Boy look a honte (shame).
The young lady would have done me a better favor as a young Dominican by coming up with an idea to clean and flush those streets as soon as the carnival is over.
But of course, this is the Council’s affair, right, not the events planners. Please, time to come to the ground and be real if we want better.

I think the initial thinking behind this is sound but it falls down in the detail. If you want to promote your country’s image with your national flag it should first of all be associated with a quality product and I’m afraid our carnival at present can be called anything but that.
Secondly, our national flag is too”busy” to be used in full for easy identification and I suggest we use reduced, or partial images for branding, like the way the British union jack for instance is used by British Airways in its livery. You may want to run a national competition for that purpose for instance. That in itself will generate a lot of interest and awarenes. Don’t let us kill of the idea altogether but work on it.

Now we have to start using flags to differentiate us from Trinidad and everywhere else. If we had remained original without all those feathers and skimpy clothing, you would just need to take one look and you would know it is a dominican band.

Now we have all those feathers taking over. No creativity, just different colours underwears and langerie.

I SAY REMOVE ALL THOSE FEATHERS. Go back to the ‘original dominican creativity and there would be no need for this news item

Dominica’s carnival. Is still original even with costume bands displaying feathers etc. Maybe you should come to an opening parade to see all the traditional and cultural groups. Dominica has to compete on a regional level and there are folks that travel around the world to play mad with different bands. We have to cater to then too and bite a piece in the pie. Some people may not travel for the original mas but we have a little of everything to suit all tastes.

I think Ms Cuffy-Jno Jules means well. However, a flag is not a brand but a sacred symbol of nationhood that carries with it a certain code of conduct for proper use and must at all times be treated with dignity and respect. And a carnival band is not the venue for that. Please refer to “Symbols of Nationhood” available online at President office.gov.dm. Of particular note, the flag should never be displayed on a carnival float except from a staff, nor should it be used for purposes of adornment or advertising or as a costume or uniform.

Well said sir. with all those electrical lines running across the carnival routes, and the behaviour of some off our revellers, can you imagine how many flags would be brought down and trampled on?Is this how we as Domnicans would like to see our National Flag so wonderfully designed, the cutest of all flags be treated..We need a brand off our original carnival, something from our indigenous people ;a pfe fig, or rope costume. a lapeau cabrite drum etc.We have the resources to design something unique, let us not think of away to desecrate our flag.

Really? When you look at photos of carnivals and festivals held around the globe you see various country flags because people are proud to represent where they’re from, to distinguish themselves from the rest. Take a look at WCMF. Are you saying these hundreds of people are unethical?

A drowning man clutching at a straw.

Desperate people making a last try to give respectability to what many Dominicans believe is a wanton display of lewdness.

People who have a tendency towards that kind of debauchery see carnival as an opportunity to let it all hang out. Godly Dominicans who know their own worth cringe. What is suppose to be a celebration of their freedom from slavery is a shameful demonstration of present day bondage to Satan and sin.

  21. I do not quite understand it; each time some of you get your first fifteen minuets of fame on DNO, like children experiencing the taste of a candy for the first time, gets excited, and talk nonsense which makes no sense!

Carnival came to life in Dominica a little less than four (400) years ago, after the abolition of Slavery. If there is no brand to it as of yet; what difference a bundle of Dominica flags are going to make? In that case in places such as Brazil, Trinidad, and Louisiana in the United States where carnival is a traditional festival; perhaps they should now consider the abandonment of costumes, and decorated floats, and replace them with their native flag! Hence, when foreign visitors go to their carnival all they will experience is a sea of the native flags. The colorful costumes, and floats are what attracts foreign visitors wherever there is carnival celebration; not flags! And if the festival does not get some exposure by advertisement, the flags will not help!

    *To fellow commentators*
Why offer soo much negativity 2 a situation like this! This is DOMINICA “News” online, and the world is watching. Everything may not be 100%, and we all have our own tastes but please, not here, not like this.

Offer some type of advice towards the situation or something constructive. I am assuming most institutions have a suggestion box, an email you can forward your suggestions to. If it is a bigger deal, make a petition or form a group or whatever.

Then again, you all can do more about the government (that you the people give and can control the power they have over you) than you all can do with things like these (that are ran by “other” groups getting things done, how they want) and you all don’t even know that. I guess that is why we will always stay and take what we get. bray bray bray… so we be? hmmm. This… is not… a joke.

We are a nation full of blessings and potential. Keep that in…

@chaaaa – Why are you so disturbed at the truthful points I’ve raised re:Carnival?

        W[h]a [h]appen to you?

    • You know there is nothing wrong with carnival: we celebrate it in recognition of the emancipation of our forefathers from slavery; we enjoyed it before it was commercialized.

Nothing is wrong with the commercialization of the festival, since that helps to bring revenue into the country, and that’s if it was advertised internationally properly. Even at that we may not benefit so much finically from its potential since Dominica lacks the facilities to accommodate the amount of revelers who may wish to attend the festival.

In the first place we lack an International Airport; we do not have any class, or high end hotels in the country, such issues presents an obstacle. Rather than that lady talk nonsense about flag brand; she should be openly talk about the obstacles which prevents a more successful event!

The lack of an International Airport is the greatest obstacle in the way of the development of anything in the country!

@Francisco – Wuh? There’s nothing wrong with carnival Francisco??? Are you serious?

Francisco, there is EVERYTHING wrong with carnival. EVERYTHING!!! Our forefathers would bawl to see how people today claim to be celebrating their emancipation from slavery. Are you suggesting that commercialization is the cause of the rampant promiscuity, drunkenness, vulgarities and other forms of decadence during that time?

It is high time the government and right-thinking businesses stop wasting money in & on that absolute nonsense.

And there is no such thing as another island having a more successful carnival than the other. Rather what you have is various islands in the Caribbean competing with each other to see whose carnival can be the most vulgar.

Channel 1 you are confused my boy. Emancipation is one thing and carnival another. I study that very carefully. We were emancipated in Dominica on 28 August 1834, just like Trinidad. Brasil abolished slavery on May 15 1888 but we all celebrate carnival the same time February/March, 3 days before Lent. Carnival was here, Trinidad and Brasil before emancipation. I see people in Germany and Italy celebrating carnival at the same time. Nothing to do with black slavery bro. We should celebrate emancipation separately, according to the proper date.

Okay, it was never intended for the killing of people participating in the festival, only in Dominica, hooligans dating back to the 1950’s perpetrated violence, our first experience was when some crazed animal set Athie Martin brother, and others on fire, in which one man burned to death in the street.

In more recent years an American tourist was gunned down for reasons know only to the criminal who murdered him, there has been more incidents, even where a member of the judiciary son was photograph on a cell phone in the act of stabbing his victim, the magistrate set him free stating the video tape showing the actual stabbing was not evidence.

There are many millions of people in Brazil ho attend Carnival annually, nothing in Dominica can compare, however, there has ever been an incident of violence I have yet to hear about. The same apply to Louisiana, and Trinidad. Now in Nottingham England that’s something else it is not Carnival, that was probably adapted for war!
