UPDATED WITH PHOTOS: Kaymaya Bertrand is Miss Teen 2013

Miss Teen poses with her chaperones Sherri Jeffrey (left) and Leandra Landra

A fourth form student of the Convent High School has copped the title of Miss Teen Dominica 2013.

15-year-old Kaymaya Bertrand also grabbed the awards for  Best Speech, Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality, Best Performing Talent and Best Response to Question.

Speaking to Dominica News Online, the newly crowned Miss Teen said that she feels happy and satisfied about winning the title. “My favourite round was the talent round since I love to dance … it was the most exciting round for me,” she said. “My talent was done by Miss Leandra Lander and I was assisted by Marvin my dance partner.”

According to the Bulls Eye Pharmacy-sponsored winner, participating in the pageant was a learning experience. “It taught me a lot of things; it taught me how to pronounce my words properly,” she stated adding that the evening wear round posed the biggest challenge for her because she had to do it properly and remember her points.

Leandra Lander, a teacher of the Convent High School and one of Bertrand’s chaperones, described the new Miss Teen as patient, well-behaved and loving.

“I told her that it’s the little details that will set her apart from the rest and I am sure that she sees now why we insisted that she did everything properly,” Lander noted.

She said Bertrand was selected through an audition process which involved speech, short talent and walking. She also added that the contestant was required to have good time management skills, good grades and family support.

“I am sure that we can all say that we made a good choice,” she said.

Audris Jno Baptiste and Sherri Jeffery were also part of Bertrand’s team.

Bertrand thanked all those who assisted her in her journey to the throne including sponsor Bulls Eye Pharmacy, the staff and students of the Convent High School, her family and friends, Carol Sorhainder, the Creative Dynamix team and the students who assisted in building her spectacular wear.

Sherise Edward of Portsmouth Secondary School took the 1st runner up position. She received awards for best evening wear and best spectacular creation.

The second runner-up was Rochell Graham of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School.

The Miss Teen Dominica Pageant has been heralded a show of class. That was before in more recent times the name is changing to a show that is of less (always because of the results). BETTER than the Miss Dominica Pageant!1 Wonder if this is why the head judge for the past at least 2 years have been affecting the results? But that shouldn’t be since former Ms Teen contestants go on to the MS. Dominica Pageant. hmmm

And body language says it all. Mr Lawrence even as MC and head of the Dance Theatre Co. your expression when giving the results seem to tell a lot. I wonder if you were head judge would the results be different? And even in the tower we spectators can see and sometimes hear the commotion. And why is it that some people always seem to have the results before they are announced? And is ALWAYS a judge that tell them. Judges alas year in year out you all will continue to get blouse. POOR ETHICS

The two years when ITSS emerged winners the crowd didn’t seem unsatisfied and a non national won (our Dominican high school students and show’s patrons are good people, deserving of applaud).

CHS have won the crown many times and no one went home disgruntled. No stones no bottles. Wrong is wrong that year when the sisters won back to back who threw the bottles?

And which set of students were cursing of adults and to compound it the ring leader was a former miss teen herself and a former CHS girl, the one stoned (was it revenge??). ooooh ooohhh Micheal Jackson

Bottle throwing, missile throwing whatever you want to call it at such events is nothing to cheer about. I know that young people can behave in a much more satisfying way, they have. And those adults who attend the shows after all… that child you cursed of and told all these things it didn’t hurt you? You have no child or children of your own?? And even going as far as wanting to hit and beat down the people’s children? They certainly do mimic your ways so one day your grandson or grand daughter may receive the same treatment. CAREFUL what you do.

To those who continue to support the event cheers and to the few who are bent on destroying it shame shame shame.

i listened to the show and i believe it was well judged. I think its time we prepare people for competition properly; meaning as part of training the participants should be told that everyone cannot be first and they should accept the judges decision. Everyone feels they do their best but someone’s best most certainly is better than another one. “if you cannot accept defeat, do not particpate”. that goes for any competition.

The pss students were not the only ones throwing bottles.A lot of persons from other areas were throwing bottles too. Why? The majority of the crowd recognized that pss should have won. Convent did do well in her speech and question rounds but her posture for those rounds were extr3m3ly off. She did not move well at all in her costume and she could not walk properly in h3r dress.this should have given pss the edge over her. I am not condoning the botttle throwing but I think tht if the show had been fairly judged then it would not have happened

“Convent” High School. They are fortunate that the Convent is not operated by the Nuns.
Come on! Consider that in those days the Convent High School would never participate in this pageant. Times have really changed and not for the better. Those were the days my friends.

I think that it is shameful for people to say is PSS children who started sending bottles??? It was actually a grandbay lady who got in that same fight after the show…n it’s shameful that Pss children had to follow the pattern, however miss Pss did well and had most of the support, but why everything always have to be for Roseau??? An u all are so small minded, even if allu take out Portsmouth people in allu thing??? You all are being mean, and so small minded…miss convent looked like a robot in that dress, her talent was ok but she did not deserve it at all.i am not a fan of these things but I don’t like the behavior of Roseau people, try to bring up each other!! Is one blood one country, when people read these comments it’s so shameful, and is Portsmouth people that keep getting the bad name, but on day it will count!!! Anyways tell that CHS girl and her staff to leave their black cat at their home,it was disturbing to see it ran out the dressing room after the show!! Congrats btw!!

I am taking this forum to tell the principal, staff and parents of Portsmouth Secondary School that they must talk to their students about good sportsmanship. I actually saw one of them send a bottle at the end of the show and to make matters worst some of them were so vocal and rude in their displeasure outside the park. A lady had to scold them. It looked ugly. Comments suggest that they are always the ones misbehaving at that show. Whether it’s true or not this is a bad reputation to have. As we all know there is no smoke without fire. Anyways Congrats to Miss CHS.

    February 4, 2013

I am from Portsmouth, and I know the contestant very well. I am so embarrassed at what went down, throwing missiles on the stage. This is a real shame. Persons must understand the work of judges. Do you think the judges would conspire to make a particular school win? It is ridiculous to say that the judges steal. The school principal must give the students a warning before these shows. This is not the first time, but use this incident as an example. I am sure Niquelle is not happy at what happened. Shame on the ones who acted in such a manner. You all have disgraced your school.

    • Justice and Truth
      February 5, 2013

We do know that today children are not children and do not act accordingly. They are disrespectful and lack discipline. I am baffled that they are not better brought up and if they are why do they conduct themselves in such a disorderly and disrespectful manner. It is so sad what is occurring among children/teenagers of today.
After all these are the adults of tomorrow. Consider the world of tomorrow with such children, some of whom may become leaders and parents. God help Dominica. God help thhe world.

Dominicans always have a problem in this day and age when CHS wins. The young lady worked hard and deserved her crown! stop being bias.

And all who are suggesting that the other schools Not participate? Why don’t they do just that because their supporters have no behaviour and attack the children with bottles. On a regular day, sending objects after someone is punishable by law! So work on your behaviour

Let the young lady savour her moment she worked for and all other school rise to the occasion to do well. ITSS won two years in a row and we heard no complaints…

Let Convent keep the crown for two years

The PSS supporters need to stop being so bitter. They were convinced their girl would win even before the show, because “she’s oh so beautiful so she has to win.” Well let me tell you, the Convent girl far outshone the rest and she deserved her crown. PSS did well, but not well enough to take it home. It’s not only about looks, you know.

    • Interesting
      February 5, 2013

OMG! This child’s beauty seem to be a problem for you??? It is not the first time you are commenting on that aspect of her. I am sure that every school supporters came in with the same expectation to WIN. Then if that’s not it why participate. Isn’t it only fair? Aye! Aye!

      • Crissy
        February 5, 2013

I never insinuated I had a problem with the child’s beauty. In fact, I acknowledged that she is indeed a very beautiful girl. But the problem that I have is since the girls were launched people such as yourself, most likely from Possi, were saying that she was bound to win, because she’s so gorgeous, even without seeing what the other girls had to offer. Now your side lost, you can’t handle defeat. Kamaya won fair and square, deal with it! It’s NOT about who’s the most beautiful.

  40. Dat Funny
    February 4, 2013

If the two sashes were made it is obvious they were meant to be presented. We have come to understand that awards are now being given for Best in Costume and Best in Dress so why werent those two sashes presented? PSS would certainly have won.
Secondly, why should a narrative be given to interpret a dance routine if dance was the talent?
Why was the Convent girl assisted by Leandra Lander while on stage, changing outfits?
Why did some judges pretend not to see when other judges made the observation?
Uncle Ray why was Dionne Durand judging a show while bieng a Convent High School teacher with a Convent High School participant?
Dont you find its conflict of interest? Magre sa!!!!!!!!
There were too many discrepancies linked to that show that is why persons will continue to call judges voleur. Be fair.
Mrs Murdock is a past ITSS Principal so when the ITSS child places before Grammar School and Grandbay one has to wonder what is going on. Uncle ray its high time you begin to face your fears. Stop allowing your head judge to bully you into submission. Waitukubli will loose the quality of that show. Persons are becoming fedup of those inconsistencies. Play fair and have a clear conscience.

Which voler that. People need to stop being so blasted bias. The child was consistent throughout the entire pageant. The crown was between Convent and Portsmouth however Convent edged out Portsmouth in both talent and question and answer segments.

Convent EDGED her out in three rounds but she MASH her us in Spec wear and evening gown. No wonder the sashes stayed back stage. Judges blaming organizers, organizers blaming judges. Well look it!

Yea..the CHS girl definitely edged out the PSS girl in the Q&A segment. Up to that point, they would have been neck and neck.

    Well done ladies!!!

To the judges.. who were the recepient of the two sashes that remained on the table. I suspect they were for Best in Spectacular Wear and Best in Evening Wear. Gues what…. Ms. Edwards would receive these sashes and be crowned Miss Teen 2013.

Very interesting…its not the first time they do that.

    • PLEASE!
      February 4, 2013

That has nothing to do with the judges. Foolish. Always talking some crap without any understanding of how things go. How in the world are sashes left on table the judges responsibility?

Direct your query to the organizers. And one more thing fool, there are no points awarded for best spectacular wear and best dress, these awards go to the designers.

I would think then that Miss PSS got the two awards she deserved, best in spectacular wear and best in dress, which just happened to put her in 2nd place. Deal with it!

And another thing, that was not an evening gown she was wearing yet she won the award for that segment. You are not satisfied with that?

Do you even have any fashion sense? Obviously NOT!!!!!!!

Come on now PLEASE… one would like to believe that before the name callings and all that talk that you would at least proof read and check to make sure that you too have the FACTS straight.

Now that is surely distasteful and embarrassing in my opinion. You’re so busy to call another person fool. Read over your post as I’m sure you’ll be checking the comments on this story again so you will read your post over. One cannot help but to wonder… are you serious?

Do you have the sashes story correct and are you a part of the organizing body (Waitikubuli Dance Theatre Co.)? Now I am curious.

The 2 Lime Green Sashes that were marked

BEST IN SPEC. WEAR and BEST IN EVENING WEAR

why were these not awarded when the organizers DID make them? Hmmmmmmmm ask for those who are not as smart or as informed as you PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
