Dominicans took to the city’s streets on Saturday to participate and witness the nation’s carnival opening parade.
The parade kicked off after 3pm on Victoria Street where private sector groups, sensay wearing individuals, bwa bwa and lapo kabwit bands along with other revellers, dazzled the streets of Roseau with their colourful costumes, dancing to calypsos and other up-tempo local music.
Among those on parade were the carnival princess and national queen show contestants and this year’s Junior Monarch contenders.
Last year’s carnival queen Jacintha Fagan and Calypso Monarch Tasha P also formed part of the spectacle.
A few individuals and a few small groups showed up in self designed costumes, while a number of flag waver contingents, some with members no older than preschool age, were represented.
Saturday’s opening parade sets the stage for the holding of several major carnival related activities including the Calypso semi-finals and Monarch competition, Junior monarch, Carnival Queen Show, and that new, eagerly anticipated Mr. Dominica Pageant.
The traditional street jump-up on Carnival Monday and Tuesday (February 20-21) is the key highlight, rounding off a carnival that is expected to feature bands and costumes galore, and revellers engaging in street partying as only Dominicans and their carnival guests can.
The NBD Flagwavers were the highlight of the parade…their colours where bright and outstanding…very beautiful uniform also…thumbs up to management on a job well done
