Calypso veteran of 46 years, Superior Picky, after getting to one of his more competitive positions in the calypso monarch competition in recent years, has found himself in a bit of a pickle.
Picky, whose real name is Julien Lockhart, is on the verge of being banned from Stardom Tent for assaulting the tent’s stage manager.
The victim, Hillary “Tilly” Thomas, told Dominica News Online that the incident occurred at the Stardom Tent on Wednesday February 5, when Picky punched him in the face after he lost his “Calypso Tug of War” face-off with another calypsonian, Hardliner.
According to Thomas, Picky complained to him that Hardliner had been allowed to sing three verses of his song while he was told to sing two verses.
The account goes on to state that Picky, a one-time boxer, then punched an unsuspecting Thomas in the face, breaking his eye glasses and leaving a gash on his face. To add insult to injury, Thomas added, he was humiliated in front of the massive crowd of calypso fans.
“Every artist is supposed to sing two verses but some sing three verses. So, Hardliner was against Picky, so when Picky come now, he sang two verses, then Hardliner end up singing three verses but the reason Hardliner sing three verses in because the people was with him, and people love the song and that is the most popular calypso right now (Calypso is my cure),” Thomas explained.
He said the competition was judged by the crowd, so when the crowd chose Hardliner as the winner, Picky started the blame game and attacked him. “And then he comes back in a rage, so I tell him that is not anything to make no contention about; what is the big deal about that? We are having fun. While talking to the man, the man just level me you know……he took me by surprise, break my lens, cut me under my eye… he hit me a hard punch, he dazzle me.”
Thomas said he did not fight back nor did he utter a word to Picky and mentioned that people told him that Picky said he had it for him along time now, an apparent grudge that stemmed from an encounter between them at the King of Kings calypso show in New York two years ago.
“So that is a thing he had coming for me, I want them to do something with him because if I am not satisfied about what’s going on, I will have to take the matters in my hands. I doh make a report yet, I just watching what’s going on.”
He said he is using and old pair of glasses and has written to Stardom Tent inquiring about the course of action that they intend to take. “Dem type of vagrants should not be around civilized people,” he remarked.
One of the Stardom Tent Organizers, Norman Letang, said he was in the crowd when the incident occurred, pointing out, “As far as I’m concerned Picky played the fool. He will definitely be banned from the tent… at least from the season. I don’t know, maybe indefinitely too.”
Attempts by DNO to reach Superior Picky for comment were unsuccessful.

No one is saying that Hardliner made a mistake while singing his song,the crowd did the judging and it was unfair to Picky for him to be judged by the crowd as the loser.Hardliner went down in the crowd and got carried away,Calypso fans have no respect for calypsonians and when they finish they want judges to have respect for calypsonians. From all account, Tilly told Picky something very rude. Tilly waiting to see what will happens he hasn’t made a report…. hmph and will take matters into his own hands.

No excuse for what Picky did. However, all this may have been avoided if the organizers and the calypsonians adhere to the rules. If the rule is two verses, then stick to rules. In our small island mentality, we make too much room for favoritism.
where there is no justice the people perish, why should some be allowed to sing 2 verses and others 3, that s what brought the contention. picky is an old vet that is suffering from all of the crukidness that is taking place and so his cup over flowed, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us.
Adults should know how to act as adults. Assaulting somebody because you are upset about something is WRONG no matter which side you look at it. Good lesson for our young poeple. Thank God Tilly is ok.

It is not Hardliner that was assaulted. It was the Stage Manager and he should file charges.
