IN PICTURES: Tewey Vaval symbolically ends Carnival season

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Carnival season ended symbolically with Tewey Vaval in Bataca, Kalinago Territory on Wednesday.

First a fake coffin was paraded through the streets to dancing and the beating of drums.

When night fell kerosene torches (bouzai) were lit while the parade continued.

Finally the coffin was burnt to ashes marking the end of the Carnival.

Pagan practices are alive and well among us. How do we reconcile this celebration with belief in God and the bible?

Based on the Pictures, I’m predicting that within the next 50-60 years the Kallinago People (the pure Kallinago) will be non existent. What will be left will simply be the descendants of the Kalinago or as we say in DA, “Batta Carib.” Will that be good or bad for the Kallinago heritage? Remember this is only a prediction, not a fact based on pure, hard evidence.

But his wasn’t an exclusively Kalinago event. There were people from as far as Grand Bay and Portsmouth, from all over Dominica.

While you might be right the Kalinago might be extinct, we cannot say that based on these photos alone.

Does anyone spot occult practices in these pictures? I am afraid this is not culture as I expect many to argue in their responses.
