Dominica Calypso Association President adds his voice to Hunter controversy

Kelvin “Ras Kelly” Williams

Having the the lyrics of a song written on the palms of a calypsonian’s hand during a perforamance is not an offense President of the Dominica Calypso Association, Kelvin “Rass Kelly” Williams, has said.

He was responding to allegations that Hunter had written some of the lyrics of his song on the palm of his hands and had read them during a performance at the Calypso semi finals recently.

It is a charge that Hunter has stoutely denied.

According to Williams, a calypsonian himself, the video of the performance has to be reviewed in order to ascertain whether the allegations are true or not. “We have to look at the complete tape because me having a song on the palm of hand, that is not an offense,” he said. “You have to probably read it and if I have it on the palm of my hand, well probably with the intention …but during the song I probably never got the chance or the need to, I just cannot say, hey those allegations are true …we will have to look at it.”

He said if Hunter was found to be reading from his palm, it would be left to him to deal with it. “If we notice that the Hunter is reading from his hand, of course it would be left to him, we would let him sit and he and his conscience to deal with it,” Williams noted.

Williams blamed the politics in calypso and the lack of objectivity for the entire brouhaha. “Because we have access to the radio we blow everything out even before we know what went on,” he remarked. “Its unfortunate if at all it happened …I would be hurt a bit if at all that’s what went on…”

He pointed out that in all competitions performers try to bend the rules but insisted the complete tape must be reviewed and examined.

He also told DNO that the DCA would be view the original footage sometime today to ascertain the facts and determine whether Hunter had in fact cheated.

I do not understand what Ras Kelly is saying. Like Hunter, he is not clear. There is a lot of ambiguity in what both gentlemen say. They both add to the public’s confusion about the matter. Ras Kelly, please state with clarity what’s the Calypso Association’s official position on calyposians reading their songs from their palms or paper while performing the songs. Please,Mr. President

I don’t think this is a conspiracy against Huntyer at all. Hunter had the lyrics to his song written on his hands. Did he use them? We do not know the answer to that but the intent in such a case is enough to serve due punishment. Like someone mentioned earlier, when doing an exam, you are not punished or exiled when cheating, but you are exiled or punished just with intent. A piece of paper, a hint, notes, a whisper categorize you as cheating. Hunter as a grown man should own up and step down. As an elite calypsonian it is shameful. I have nothing against Hunter, I enjoy his music and respect him as a calypsonian but that was dead wrong and he deserve to be punished accordingly.

What nonsense ghost talking dere nah. The association have to take a decision and disqualify hunter for cheating,it cannot be left to hunter’s conscience to do the right thing. Question for ghost: Can a calypsonian show up with lyrics to his song on a piece of paper and have it in his hands during a competition? Stop tryig to look for loop holes to make what hunter did right. why some calypsonians get away with so much and others are crucified. To the calypsonian that came out number 10 at the semis I say to you contest any decision that is taken to keep hunter in the competition.

So Ghost to use your logic, if you write the answer to a question on the palm of your hand and enter an examinations room and of course when you are caught you will be kicked out of the exams room and disqualified. So your argument will be “We’ll I did not use the words written on my hand because there was no need to since I remembered the answer from my head and had no use for the answer written on my palm”

Let’s see how far you would get with this.

Ras kelly in the finals too just like hunter so he cant say anything against him. this is pure dishonesty. If dice was caught doing this we wouldn’t hear the end of this. Look at his hand again, its the beginning of one of the verses. This is not the first time that this talk has come up about hunter. If this is not cheating then all calypsonians should come on stage with a copy of their songs o paper and look to it when ever they feel that they need to.You are supposed to remember your song, not read it through the performance.

Every calypsonian is (should I say “should be”) held to the established judging criteria. He is not a judge, as far as I know. Does he hold any sway over the judging? Is he, as President of the organization, involved with selecting the judges for the competition? If the answer to that is yes, then he should be barred from taking part, because implicit in that responsibility is the matter of bias – unless there is some objective and transparent set of expectations for picking the judges.

From now on all calypsonians are free to come to a calypso competition with their entire song written in the palm of ur hands. Just be sure that de camera doh catch u reading ur palms.
Derose and Webb added new parts to their songs but they didn’t need to write it in de palm of their hands to look at during their performance.
Hunter, I am going to penalize both u and scrunter. I have officially banned all u music from playing in my house. I am not going to support u all by purchasing ur music either.

I take it to mean partisan politics. Well Ghost it was not partisan politics when you sang about other government administrations every year during the periods when your party was not in power. Politics has always been part of calypso.

Kelly, dat talk of conscience doh making no sense Investigate the allegations and deal with Hunter if he is guilty. End of story.

I must say though dat dem “journalists” on Q95 need some major taining. First, apaprently none of them contacted Hunter to get “his side o fthe story” before running wild with it. Second, both Matt and Linton gave different interpretations of what Hunter has on his hand. Third, so, let us suppose dat Hunter has his song on his hands, is this cheating? Nope. It becomes cheating if Hunter uses the notes on his hand during the performance. If you listen to dose smart-a” journalists you would have already fried and eaten Hunter. He prolly well guilty, but alas, dem journalists dere need to come better than dat.

Do we now need an IPO for calypsonians? Ras Kelly has pronounced that it is not an offence to use a “prompter” as allegedly used by Hunter. I wish that was made clear earlier so we didn’t all have to go into a twist and get Hunter to contort himself like a judas. After all, newsreaders and even politicians use prompters – many don’t even write their own speeches or lyrics, singers do cover versions and lip-synch. The point is that we should be frank and open that. Hunter, you should have owned up man but I guess you panicked and felt trapped and as a result the incident has been blown out of all proportion. Can we now get on with the competition please?

    • Anonymous
      January 30, 2013

Thats a good point about Hunter maybe panicking and the use of promters by politcians etc but up to now it is still not clear if using a prompter is against the rules.

Kelly gave a wishy washyy kinda answer there that I couldnt really understand nuh. Still not clear if what Hunter allegedly did was against rules.

IS READING LYRICS OFF THE PALM OF YOUR HAND AGAINST THE RULES?

  41. Wheninrome
    January 30, 2013

Ok, so Hunter had something written in the palm of his hand. They say it was lyrics to his song – fine! Lets be devils advocate a little, shall we? As a writer, I tend to write stuff in the palm of my hand all the time, especially if I’m considering making changes to something I’ve just written. Having said this, there could be a number of reasons why Hunter wrote words in the palm of his hand. He may have been considering changing the lyrics to a particular line or he may have been trying to memorize a particular line in the form of scribble. The bottom line is, unless proven otherwise, no one can say he broke any rule with regards to calypso. Moreover, unless that so-called video that allegedly caught him cheating is carefully scrutinized and can prove that he actually cheated, no one can say they actually caught him in the act of cheating. I have read from many persons who actually attended the show that night and no one actually saw him reading from scribbles written in the palm of his hand. He may have intended to cheat – who knows! But did he actually cheat? Has anyone been found guilty and jailed for simply thinking of committing an offense? Innocent until proven guilty applies to everyone. He may have had a ‘gun’ (lyrics written on his palm) but was it a smoking ‘gun’? Unless he actually used that ‘gun’ (caught reading the scribbles while performing) then it wasn’t a smoking ‘gun’. In addition, think about it – how does one perform effectively on stage as the Hunter did while reading from a cheat sheet? Wouldn’t it be quite obvious that he was cheating? The brain doesn’t work that way. His focus would have surely been obscured. I agree, Hunter was a fool to lie about having numbers written in his palm when it was clearly words written there. However, I’m sure a lot of us would lie about, say, being at the scene of a crime with the intention of staying out of trouble. Which doesn’t mean you did anything wrong while at the scene of that crime. The bottom line is lets not give the man a death sentence until otherwise proven guilty.

Let me ask you, does a student taking an exam need to be seen looking at cheat notes to be kick out of the exam room or once the evidence of him having the cheat notes on his desk face up is enough to kick him out? Let’s be honest here and ask Hunter to do the right thing, whether he looked at it or not it was dishonest.

There are rules in the classroom that is clear if one is found cheating there are consequences. What is the rule in Calypso?

      • Wheninrome
        January 30, 2013

Well to answer your question – this is not a school exam. School policies clearly states that having any material during an exam is not allowed unless permission is given for open book; HOWEVER, there’s nothing in the rules of calypso that states it’s forbidden or wrong to write lyrics anywhere, be it on props or on your person. Unless this is clearly stated for all to understand then it’s not a rule; hence, it doesn’t warrant disqualification. I’m not saying what Hunter did was ok but I’m not saying he cheated either – nor should you because you didn’t see him cheat and it’s yet to be proven that he did.

When I was growing up, my parents had this old maxim everytime my name was associated with some public wrong: “If you were not there, you name would not be called.” That implicit warning to by all means keep out of trouble became the rule that I lived by.

So to address your point, Wheninrome, Hunter (no less a person of my growing up days) should have known better. He must have known that his acitons, now admitted by him, could have landed him in trouble. That he obviously took care to mask his actions is evident of sinister motives. And I should remind us all that motivation to do this or that act is a powerful inspiration and an indicator of a perso’s intention.

There was a time, like in the days my parents ruled, when you did not need to prove “criminal” intent in order to prove your moral virtue and your sense of integrity. In most things, you were bound by a community’s all encomapssing morality.

It is that sense of our collective society’s predisposition to do no harm that commentators are requiring Hunter to own up to, embrace and do the right thing by bowing out of the competition.

      • Wheninrome
        January 31, 2013

Truth Seeker – the fact of the matter is no one has undeniable proof that Hunter cheated. Yes, there were words scribbled in the palm of his hands. He may have intended to cheat during the performance – but did he? Even if it was his intentions the question is – did he fulfill that intention? No one is yet to prove he did. What if he had a change of heart and decided not to cheat? You can’t tell me that you’ve never thought of doing something wrong but later had a change of heart. All I’m saying is the man deserves the benefit of the doubt. Who are we to cast the first stone? He did not break any rule pertaining to calypso. I can easily say that it’s highly possible that other calypsonians have done the same thing by writing lyrics on their props – but I would be wrong to assume that considering I have no proof of it. Innocent until proven guilty should be applied in Dominica like anywhere else.

You can’t be wrong and get right, don’t matter how hard you may try. Calypsoians loose points for forgetting theirs words, so it is not fair that Hunter should get and easy pass. He should not be disqualified but, he should have some points minus from him. Remember the other competitors work hard to remember theirs words and they should be compensated for their normal performance.

  51. January 30, 2013

if it was the dice it would not have water to wash his back boy they would immediately dis qualify him hunter i love this song so much if you do that you didappoint me boy i had you in mind for my top for cause this song is so touching scrunter ?hunter ? the calypso veterans the calypso brothers wow what a shame

The association needs to review its laws. If it was dice who did that, he would have been out of the competition.

So unfair. If he has the lyrics on his hand that is cheating because he apparently cannot remember his own song.If it was another calypsonian, they would have eliminated him immediately upon hearing this allegation. I love Hunter but we are overdoing it now in Dominica. No law? C’mon

One day my brother, you’ll have to pay too! That is ignorance at its finest. For Kelly to say it is not an offence I concur but as the DCA president he should say that this is the first and last time that would happen because he will implement rules to give everyone the same advantage

Every thing is upside down, everything is inside out, wrong is right, no values, no ethics, no principles! WOW What nice lessons for the youth. Alas poor Dominica, lying, scheming, cheating stealing is the entire fabric of the nation! That my dear has been the acceptable NORM!!!!! What a country?

I don’t believe that Ghost has any Integrity to say what he said in this piece. This country has been resorted to wrong in right according to who did it and right is wrong according to who did the act. Remember we are to live according to the Almighty Father’s call, Right is right and wrong is wrong regardless of who performs the act.

if it is not an offence why is ras kelly saying that they need to sit down AND discuss it? what is he saying let his conscience be his guide? stupes! alyou confusing me.

      January 30, 2013

True, if it is not an offence then all discussions should be dropped, and the DCA should get together and decide what is an offence and what is not and offence. DCA (Ras Kelly)you too confusing man. It is not an offence, therefore you have nothing to sit down and watch.

In my view, Mr. Williams is right on all counts except the part of letting Hunter’s conscience “deal with it.” The Calypso Association should have mechanisms that allow for an investigation along the lines that Mr. Williams, himself, has indicated. Where it is found that a calypsonian has cheated, he/she should be dealt with accordingly. Conscience is not so fair!

oh really, well i guess they’ll implement one, whereas there are other parts of our country where there are mechanisms to question ‘cheating’. Many other ills that people in public life do, and we some how try to throw it under the rug and seek to hang the messengers n patriots….

Peeping Tom congratulations you have received some acknowledgement for truth to power it should be clear to you now that the many thumbs Dwn that you have received on this forum is because people are genuinely sick of your rotten conscience. By the way one more congratulation to you for noting that conscience is not fair – I am sure that came from the heart. Thanks for confirming that you have a sick conscience and I am sure you are totally nonchalant about the many times your blogs get hidden by DNO due to mass thumbs down reaction.
This time you did nt just put your. Foot in your mouth but some how your manage to in your own mouth.

Oh, Mamizoo, Mamizoo, Mamizoo…You think Peeping Tom really give a rat’s behind about “thumbs down or thumbs up”? Just ask a blogger who sometimes uses the handle “Roseau Valley.” Thumbs? I can reproduce them at will, as you well know. Right now, for example, Peeping Tom can add ten to your post. Juss like dat!

The thumbs down, though, I must admit though that sometimes, i get excited by large numbers of thumbs down. Sometimes. The same is not true for thumbs up. These have no effect on me. You know why, Mamizoo? Large numbers of thumbs down tell me a few things. To begin, it says that some bloggers obsess over me and have an orgasmic reaction to anything i post. If i post “God is love”, they will give a thumbs down to that too. Second, this obsession is in fact, a compliment. It says i hit those viewers (not all of them actually read) so often and so hard that they cannot get me out of their head. This says that i am on the right track. Finally, I am this blogger whom you love to hate but whom you silently hate to love because i am always correct. ALWAYS! I bet you wish that i sang your songs too.

So, Mamizoo, thumbs? Peeping Tom actually is stimulated, turned on, by thumbs down. The more you add, the more i hit you! Keep ’em coming.

Hunter had words written on his hand and Kelly want to tell me that was not an unfair advantage!

    • January 30, 2013

Hunter had words in his hand I’ve been analysing closely the words in his hand and I will say it’s very difficult to say without a doubt it’s words of the song I will continue my own checking I will not depend on what Matt or Lennox came up with either. I’m also saying Hunter shouldnt have anything written in his hand it’s wrong in the first place regardless if he read it or not, But on the other hand an Executive of the Calypso Association is saying there are no rules that address issues like what happened I strongely suggest that should be made part of the Rules going forward but I dont believe it’s up to the Association or even the Judges to ask Hunter to step down because some people say so they should leave it up to Hunter and his conscience to make the decision he would have to face the consequences.
Another matter if and when Hunter do step down who would be next that doesnt mean Electra should go thru because some people said so the board they would have to follow the line up of the Judges and that mean #10 should replace #9 if he steps down the replacement some people are calling for which is Electra is not up there and it’s time we accept the decision on that and move on, Calypso controversy continue .

In their rules, it does not say that this is an offence. Get it? IT IS NOT AN OFFENCE according to the DCA. This is the guiste of the matter. Not an offence is Not an offence.

I am sure if it was another calypsonian, they would have his head on a platter. That is how we have become in Dominica, wrong doing is now considered to be right. Well I say to the other calypsonians go to the show with a piece of paper in their pockets..

the so called investigators in dominica every thing the support or say is the truth nothing but the truth they have their agenda and will look for any and every thing to propell their evil deeds. the question is when did hunter wrote the lyrics may b he thought of some addition to his perfomance just before the show who knows?this whole thing calypso politicing is just to fustrate the veteran calypsonians who may favour the government with their songs so as to bring in all rubbish songs they believe can through out the government. to hunter go out there and peform a runners up for you is more profitable for you than the monarch for some puppet master. if the stardomites are out then the so called puppet masters can get all his calypsonians inthe finals thus increasing his purse to take up to the u s stardom fan
