Stay out of Wet Fete – organizer to students

Main organizer of the popular “Wet Fete” show is sending a strong message to high school students, warning them that they will be denied entry into the event.

Wet Fete is carded for Sunday, February 3 at the Sisserou Hotel and according to Tilly Thomas, it is for mature patrons only.

“I am sending a special message to the high school students, please support the teenage pageant which is on the same day. Although Wet Fete is an attractive show, go out and support your school, it is a more appropriate environment for you,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.

He added that it is about time that the Dominican society “allows children to be children” and not to allow them to enter adult oriented shows.

“The youth are forgetting who they really are, so we have a responsibility to get them back in line and show them who they are. My security are already instructed to deal with underage people who will try to enter the event,” Thomas stressed.

He indicated that students who enter the show will be asked to leave and he also urged vendors to avoid selling alcohol and cigarettes to students.

“It bothers me to see young people smoking and drinking. I am calling on the people to stop selling drinks to young children. My show is a show where alcohol will be sold, I cannot allow high school students to come into my show and drink alcohol,” he said firmly.

Top bouyon bands such as WCK, Triple Kay International and Kross Vybes are expected to perform at the show.

Additionally, bouyon sensation, Asa Bantan, Nayee, Shadow Flow and other artists and other DJs will be performing.

I am so very pleased that someone has the interest of school children at heart. I don’t live in Dominica but I am Dominican and the scale of smoking and drinking among youths at home is vast. Good on you organiser. It’s time that children go back to being children and grow up gradually that has extinct in Dominica.

I think it is a great idea it is time to stop the youg kids from being all over the place. As parents we should kno excatly where our kids are going if we are responsible we would never allow our children to dres unappropriately and leave our home to go to any unwanted show i agree wit this organiser and the others should continue to do the same. Plus the vendors who are selling alcohol to the young ones should b warned its nt because u want to make a lil $ u have to sell alcohol n cigarettes to students please if ur a parent put urself in that child mother place would u like someone to sell alcohol n cigarettes to ur son/daughter? Its a good idea if i was in Dca i would back u up the organizers are doin the right thing. Too much crime n violence in this lil dca plus teenage pregnancy.

Is youngsters that does make a jam swing, and i dont see why they cannot drink a little thing and get themselves accustomed to it and find their limit. Imagine you 25 years old vomiting in a gutter in carnival, noooo, you supposed to know your limit years ago, and what not to mix with what, and what not to drink after what. Is when you young you have to free up, and those girls only have a couple years to look good in a bathing suit anyway.
Why all you want to turn Dominica into America? when those American children leave their mother home for the first time, they does get more west, because it new to them, they don’t know about that.
Oh and good luck with the ID cards business all you talking about there, it would make election time bobol that much more difficult, so why would he do it? Ah, ask yourself, why?

I must say I am happy to here an organizer taking this stance. Yet at the same time we have to wonder about our current society in DA. DA hs always been a country of freedom where we never had ID issues and “going jam” has always been a part of our culture. Yet this was never a problem back in the days. As kids we knew our place and we knew where we were allowed to go and where we weren’t. Some of us would be afraid to be seen some places cause you know is a beating you would be getting if you even had to wait that long to get home (cause you know your father or mother would have shown up where you were and look koolwash hahaha). I think we need to go beyond the ID check and really look at our parenting skills. Our grandparents maybe were too hard/harsh but it was for good reasons and we could still learn a few lessons from their style. Our country is developing fast but on the wrong track.

Long they should have stopped that. These days children more grown up than adults. And there should be events that adults, even the teachers should be able to attend without having students/children there

    February 1, 2013

This is where our society needs to pressure govt to act on the behalf of us all. We need an official I.d card on the nature island. Some form of driver or non drivers I.d. The system would pay for itself with revenues generated from processing fees.

It’s about time we as adult set guidelines for the youth to follow.
Some events are not for kids.
My hat goes off to Tilly.
Thanks for setting the trend….hopefully we can slowly change the norm in our society.
Have a great Carnival everyone, have your fun, dance, drink but keep it in moderation.
    Clean fun with no regrets!!!!!

The intention is great …. but the law makers need to revise the laws because the age of conscent is 16 but you are an adult according to law at 18.

This means 16 year old girl is resposible enough to drive a man but not responsible enough to drive a car until 18.

The law allows the 16 year old to sleep out and engage in sexual activity but now Thomas is saying they cannot go to wet fete.

I support the idea ..cuz I am an adult .. but when u think of it .. this dude can be taken to court by a 16 year old who is in high school cuz this is a public affair and not a private party..

Dominica needs to revise the law for age of conscent and age of adultwood.

16 year olds are allowed to say yes to sex but they cannot buy the condom or take the pill not until they are 18..phmmmmmmmm

      February 1, 2013

If you are to pay an entrance fee on private property, how is it a public event. The organizers can refuse to serve or admit school age children if he deems the event inappropriate. A 16 year old cannot go to a movie theater and purchase a ticket to view and X-rated movie – the concept is the same. I applaud Tilly for taking a step in allowing our children to be children.

3K’s playing so automatic “gun and knife club”, thats the kind of wonderful following they attract. ….but with a line up like that do you honestly expect the kids to go to a pageant.
So long as money being exchanged for goods, booze, smokes or tickets, it is up to the vendor to enforce age limits, all they need to think is “What if it was your kids buying”.

I couldn’t support this brother more. I think withe trend that th youth of our society have begun to take. It is imperial that someone starts to send the message that we should let our children be children. If their parents aren’t then you be the catalyst to change. I salute u brother and urge others in the entertainment industry in our lovely land to come on board and send the same message. That we will not tolerate that we loose a generation of promise to crime, violence and insolence. Hat’s off to u brother.

    January 31, 2013

I commend your actions Tilly. I just hope it will be enforced on the said date. How are you going to do the sorting? Some form of ID? What would be the minimum age for entry? Its time activities are categorized by age. There are certain events that kids and adults cannot mingle together. Their time will come eventually.

  23. daddy
    January 31, 2013

while I understand Mr Tilly’s action, had it been a gospel concert, children would be allowed in the concert without a problem.why is it that they are not allowed in the wet fet.Because the people know that the wet fet is bad.Don’t try to change the young people by refusing them entry to wet fet. you adults should stay away fom these activities as true examples and train up your child in the knowledge of God.This is the best and only answer

    • Anonymous
      February 1, 2013

Daddy stop repeating Randy Rodney nonsense. School children will be allowed to a Gospel concert because it is for everyone not just for adults. The wet fet is an adult fet or do you and Randy need comprehension lessons?

BTW adults have to answer for themselves so leave the children alone, unless you have eyes on a school child?

Well finally something to praise our society for, excellent Press Release. I would like the organizers to inform the public that entry will only be allowed with some form of ID, Drivers License, social security, something that can identify the people on entry. Too bad we don’t have tihe Voter ID card yet :) that would be ideal as it would be given to 18 years and up.
Be firm in your decision organizers, hats off to you guys. Tasha will continue to live in our hearts as we are reminded that Children should be children

    Mr Thomas,

Do people in Dominica carry any form of ID? If not, how did you instruct your security to “deal with underage people who will try to enter the event?”

Will they be going on appearance? Some minors look more like adults than some adults. Is the legal “drinking” age 18? What if I’m over 18 and still in high school? Are we confusing “high school” age with the legal drinking age?

“Carding” is just another rule which we may not be able to enforce…. yet.

Since you mentioned the top bouyon bands, you better be prepared for the “underaged” crowd already planning to enter.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Social Security Card, Driver Licence, Passport, work id, state college id and many more. Adults 18 years and over !! need some form of id to open an account at a bank or credit union. So it is a simple case that those who do not have an id to present at the gate should not be allowed to enter.

Finally someone is taking action against this situation.. Thumbs up… The law authority should now follow suit and take action against the sale of alcohol and cigarettes to underage children… This is one of the causes of the negative behavior of our Dominican youth.. time to tackle the cause of the problems..

It’s about time I like that. They should put a measure in place where persons who’s age are questionable should present an ID under the age of 18. Raising the age of consent alone is not enough. Society needs to be pro-active. Way to go! :-D :-D :-D

wow great news Dominica needs more individual such as Tilly. I do hope this will go as planned and allot of other organizers of shows should do the same, rather than complain of the negativity the youths do….

Can you also Tilly please ask persons to bring along an ID for proof, these our youths today are under age and they tend to look like 25 years old… YOU GO TILLY. :-D :-D :-D
