New comer, Checko, will join eight other more experienced calypsonians to do battle against reigning calypo monarch, Tasha P, in this year’s final which is scheduled to be held in two weeks time.
The others, who survived what has been described by calypso commentators as a ‘very tight’ competition among 20 semi-finalists, are: Sye, Soul Puss, Web, Caressa, Vigilante, Dice, Explosion and Bobb.
Another new comer this year, Black Diamond, on his way to the semi-final, repeatedly impressed calypso lovers with his compelling rendition of “Pit Toilet”, a song written by his uncle Jerry Lloyd. ( Black Diamond is the son of calypsonian, Joey ‘Explosion’ Lloyd).
It was widely expected that he would be among the finalists.
However, the pressure from that expectation might very well have been the cause of the temporary lapse on stage which cost him a place in the final round.
The 2012 calypso monarch final will be held on the 18th of February.

The teacher theme in Dice’s song is so closely tied in with politics it makes me wonder a bit whether the song was indeed ‘intended initially’ for teachers.
The words of the song somewhat echo very frequent comments on a popular Saturday afternoon radio show to a particular host who is often referred to as ‘teacher’ and ‘hero’. It may sound far fetched and the teacher theme is great, but, so intricately tied in with politics………………

I stayed home and listened and did my own judging in the abscence of seeing the presentations. I had the advantage of not being influenced by the reaction of the crowd – so i did not take presentation into account in my judging. I found that Checko, sounded ordinary and did not have full control of his song; his rendition was of and weak and therefore given the high level of others performances that night he could have been left out; also Sye sounded out of control sometimes although a crowd favorite he to was marginal on my score card; The Dice song and topic was contradictory – he refered to the head of State as Prime Minister and his concept of a teacher and who is a teacher was very unclear and at times his message was confusing and conflicting – however he handle the material very well no doubt he is a performer but given the high level of comptition he to was marginal- in my judgement the Hunter who came across extremely strong could have placed instead of the Dice; also Comforter came across very strong, in full control of his material in comparison to Checko and he should have edged out Cheko; I was in sync with the judges with the fate of Scunter it lacked originality almost heard that rendition before and as I am on that point Tasha P may want to consider her second song because it to in my opinion lacks originality that is ‘I eh leavin’; others who were marginal that semi final night included the Bob and the Web but then again thats just my opinion I know the judges had to have a very hard task in deciding the final nine. I think this was the best semi finals in a long time, well for me the best i have seen. I want to big up the stage management which i think was very professional. I hope we can get a finals managed like this ,big up to Nath Isaac and his guys. DCA please have someone understudy what Nath is doing so when he decide to call it a day we can keep the standard.

Black Diamond and I think of hearing songs from the great Chuck Dust and Cocrow. This guy has a talent that should be nurtured. He sings “Kaiso, Kaiso” like a mini maestro which is an indication of the artform at a higher level. He appears wise beyond his years- a kid with a serious approach to the artform. I really support finding the opportunity for him to take this song around the region specifically as a guest artist as other islands hold their calypso competitions. There comes the time for the Ministry of Culture/Tourism to capitalize on the opportunity.
I also think that we need to move to having the second song released immediately following the semi-finals (i.e. as a requirement of those who have made it to the finals including the reigining monarch). This will ensure that the public is familiar with the songs. It is somewhat distressing to go to a show and find that you have to be standing baffled because you do not know the song. I consider it calypso suicide on the part of the calypsonian. When the crowd knows the song it enhances the Calypsonian’s confidence and adds to the quality of the show while everyone has a good time. You really don’t need alot of time to learn/practice two songs. If you take exams you have limited time to prepare/study. Let’s use that approach for Calypso too. In essence it would mean preparation by all concerned way ahead of the commencement of the season so that by the time the season comes around every calypsonian would be at his A game armed with two noteworthy songs. This would definitely take the artform to another level.
To those who made it to the finals kudos. I am delighted Dice made it, very promising talent. I am a fan of his and Tasha P. Dice is getting there and one day if he continues and is surrounded with positive support he will find his calling and become a well rounded individual. His teachers must demand of him the highest not only in delivery of songs but also in his personal development which will add to the calibre of person he can become. His work is of a higher level, question is, is he willing to answer the call? He needs to find what his calling is. Dice go on and God’s sped. To the other Calypsonians Vigilante, Checo, Soul Puss and Karessah my deepest support. Bobb great song. Sye as the song says you go ahead on the night and “burn, burn, burn” the competition up. Tasha P I am also a staunch support of yours-a die hard fan. Remain humble, deliver with conviction, thrill the crowd, embrace your competition, enjoy yourself and rise above the occasion. You are on your way. Calypso fanatics enjoy the season we will continue to muse over this over the course of the next few weeks when we meet in Calypso kingdom.

Great great show….disappointed about black diamond….I felt his pain last night…brilliant performance but something happened.

Congrats to all the finalists. Indeed, we may all have varying views as to who should be in the finals and so forth, however the judges decision is FINAL. Its now time for those wit TWO Big tunes to be the champion. The Big show is for those who can handle steam, pressure, hold their nerves and sway the judges and move the crowd to a certain extent. Diceey is in the running for the crown cause he must be behind the scene putting together a strong, strong second song. Soul Pus is also the way to be king but wit two good songs. De buss man Vigilante has to be vigilant from now on! Vigilante just need a solid, gripping and strong second song and he will be laughing all the way to the bank on ash Wednesday to save some of the championship dollars! In my opinion all the guys have a chance to take a shot at the crown and big prize.. The reigning Monarch has to move from good, better and best on the night, if she does well its two in a row. The reigning monarch just have to watch her self careful and dont get tied up in mudslinging and ole talk bout who is champion.. champions only language is Victory…
In the mean time, its time for serious practice, serious training night and day….. And let the best person win the crown!!!
Those who did not make it hard luck and come better next time. But to be honest some didnot make it because of inexperience and their inability to handle pressure. DCA Please organize programs for the young stars to be able to be well rounded calypsonians. There is a good program in Barbados conducted by the culture ministry and those in kaiso, perhaps you guys can take a page from their book. Blessings to all Dominicans! I think my friend Alex needs to re-think, their are certain things are guy must know his weakness and strength, alex tends to force his way into alot of things which he cant really show up for…
heard him saying that broadcasters shouldnt pre-judge the show, what he thinks are we back in the dark ages..come on alex you should be more broadbase in your thinking. its healthy to critic stuff, makes folks get stronger onto the drawing boards if everyone sits quiet its like you imposing slavery, which i know you are against and wrote strong black orientated plays…so something seems wrong..i think you need to sit down and just re-examine your thoughts or you will just blow the good you have done before bro..take my advice..
the show from the outside was decent, the sound company and their logistics need to know in those events you needs to have a voice proccesor and the band must follow at the back, this is small skills a engineer must know the vocalist in those events cant be overshadowed by the band too loud in the console output, its can confuse the judges..
Maybe its time we raise the bar in get our artists in tune with in air monitors, so they will feel the comfort and ease, rather than the nosey onstage monitors…

What a night of excitment, suspense, nail biting, and tension. The way the calypsonians presented themselves, i thought it was the night of the finals. The semi finals was of a very high level. The judges did not have an easy task.

I empathized with the Black Diamond. It was so heartbreaking when he forgot some lines of his popular Pit Toilet and to witness his pain. He was a virtual certainty to make it to the Finals until this slip. This was the biggest disappointment of the night. The mass of the audience were in disbelief and wished it did not happen. I wish him greater success next year if he competes.
Hunter was below par. Scrunter was able to pull in the audience to his performance but his song was not powerful enough to be among the top nine. Both veterans have not been at the top in the last few years. Is their best of the past?
