Twenty calypsonians have secured a place to clash in the calypso Semi Finals slated for February 15.
Some 32 calypsonians faced each other on stage at the Quarter Finals held at the Newtown Savannah on Saturday night.
However 12 were not lucky enough to continue the race to capture this year’s ultimate prize: the calypso monarch crown.
That crown is held by Dice.
Those who qualified for the Semi Finals are: Daddy Chess, Beno, Superior Picky, The Wave, The Bobb, Checker, Bouplay, Chris B, Jammer B, Observer, Jay Dee, Leona, Black Diamond, Explosion, Lugas, The Webb, Hunter, Beetle, Sye and Young Bull.
Names from last year that did not advance include The Ghost, Checko, Trendsetter and Man Himself.

The best performers at the Quarter Finals the night were Queen Leona, Jay Dee, Beetle J, Wave, Chris B, Bouplay, Bull, The Bobb, and Superior Picky. I wish them all the best in the next round.

Congrats, Jay Dee. I am so happy you made it. I noticed you were a bit nervous in front of that massive crowd. The semi finals will be greater so please start perking up your courage from now. Just relax and entertain the crowd. Congrats also to all the others who went through. I think Man Himself should have been there instead of Observer, Jamma, or Lugas.
so where Lady Star cause i was there and she was great……i can see her there before quite a few ppl. but the judges not easy. and then all you expect ppl to remain loyal to the arena when all you only push through who all you like. Lady star stay strong you were great. ghetto prince i enjoyed your performance as well.

I think Pat should should deliver the two songs to Leona and tell her to choose the one she want and give Dice the other one;I am sure he will have a frist and second in the finals if she can keep up the performance she have there.I wish her well,and i wish Dice well also.
One critic said that the young bull should not used the words…when i eat i poopooing and when i drink i peepeeing. I disagree with the individual. Poopoo and peepee is universal laguange and furthermore it’s carnival & calypso. When one goes to the Infirmary you hear the nurses and other medical personnel use the term peepee and poopoo to the patients; also at Drs offices and PMH. Growing up as children, that is the term used by our parents to toilet train us. So what is the big deal about Val using that in his calypso. The wrongs that some people should see, they don’t see.
Dominican what we really want?Calypso always going to have this controversy,As long as man or women are judging things,there will be casualties,every year is the same thing.I doe think things will change,there are some i wish were there, that are not there but the judges decisions are final,so i got to move on,there are more pressing matters to adress in life.
But i will say to the Ghost,it’s time to forcas on writing for people,because people who write for themselves,doe seems to be getting far,and most writers who try singing befor diden’t get too far.I would like the “naked feet” influence in Calypso to get stronger,Some are Writers,and some are Singers and the collaboration is Good for the Competition,so let’s move on to the next round for more contorvesy.
I understood and I repeat understood, that the unholy Ghost had decided not to contest this year because he claimed it was a one year thing last year for a particular reason but because of all the persons who pulled out of the semis for one reason or another,Vigilante was next in line on the reserve list. Being that Vigilante is a Mass Camp artist, the unholy one then decided to contest to deny a Mass Camper and a young calypsonian at that, the opportunity to compete. Well there is a saying that God is not a police and that level of selfishness and vindictiveness was dealt with and resulted in the usual embarrassment of the unholy one.
Imagine that this guy was the president of the Calypso Association
All the calysonians sound the same every year with their tunes; but when a different calysonian sing the same sone it sounds different. I said, could be voice thing, when someone said melody as last year. They also said he has similar lyrics.

Soul puss a few years ago you were reluctant to sing other writers material but your own , then you started singing songs penned by Pat on the grounds that you had an input in the songs and wuld do it for a wile . I think it’s time you give a try at thepen or take a hiatus from the arena , select none political topics and come again . And the reason I am saying this is not to bring you or your writer down but you begin to sound like a stuck record and presently ” you are singing YOUR blues “.Presently you and your song not even welcome as a guest artist , your slim fan base has dwindled , ake my advise and jump ship now .
I don’t think that Explosion,Sye and Young Bull deserves their spot

Pas la! Checko’s performance on Saturday night was not up to par at all, at all (and it takes a lot for me to say that because I am from La Plaine). But, fair is fair, and Checko did not deserve a spot this time.

Bob singing a David Rudder Melody.over 95% of these melodies are recycled.It shows no progress and the Judges them aiding and abetting.These are disappointing tunes.Where is soca music? D/ca lagging papa.
Moving forward the calypso association needs to encourage writing your own songs. So the finals will be one round with a writer and the next round your own song. This will truly showcase the strength of our calypso and calypsonians.

Great show guys , congrats to all who made it to the the Semi finals .. Why do so many of the Calypso sounds so recycled 90 percent of this year Calypso sounds the same , pretty much every Calypso is the same topic , the Prime Minister , the President , The Chinese ……… Is that all that’s going on in Dominica ??? There’s so many social issues going on in our beloved country that the Calypsoians can sing on … The only Calypsoians that sing on different issues this year , Picky , The Hunter , Daddy Chess , Black Diamond and Observer … Also the Calypsos are so poorly masked or not masked at all , the boldness of calling out people names in songs , then cry foul when they are sued Whatever happened to the play of words and proper masking leaving it for us the calypso Fanatics / Patrons to figure out ……….. Moving on , Not sure how Sye and the Explosion made it to the semi finals , Sye you’re starting to sound more and more like Soul Puss ( recycled material) .. Lady star should have place instead of Sye, Jammer B or The Explosion . Other than that minor hiccup the Judges did and incredible job . Picky and Hunter you guys are my faves from the Quarter finals , great performance from you guys . Picky I’m rooting for you , you sound great this year very big and deep song , remind me of the picky I grew up listening to.

Talking about calling people’s names boldly. This is Dominica carnival, the real mass, that’s how we knew it. That’s how we enjoyed it. We had our fun. One didn’t have to wait on a competition to get a road march. It was composed on the road on the spot especially when the band passed in front of the and nobody was taken to court. Nowadays, things happen in your face, sing about it and people threaten with libel suit.
Sye is confused. FIrst he said you can’t escape the long arm of the law. This year he is not allowing the law to take its course…smh
I don’t think that Jammer B nor Young Bull deserve a spot ahead of The Ghetto Prince. Young Bull just can’t hold a key. His song is lyrically strong but then his singing is atrocious and he just can’t get far singing discordant. Jamma B blundered and his lyrics are not as strong. Ghetto prince was excellent considering that his song written in a minor key was difficult one to sing. Not sure that there are much calypsonians in Dominica who could have sang this song as well particularly at that tempo. I believe that the song if adjusted (tempo)for the later competitions could be in the finals.
Disgusting moment of the show – Kelly The Ghost. As an executive of the calypso association Kelly’s action was distasteful. It would have been acceptable if he had not offered this lame excuse cause we are all use to Kelly forgetting his song on stage but to state that you only sang for the heck of it because of inadequate preparation is not only denying someone else the opportunity but also diminishing the integrity of the competition. Totally distasteful Ghost

I do agree with your comments, but what do we expect from someone who had threatened to eat a cruise ship. The Ghost should stop singing, he didnt even look comfortable on stage
So Soul Puss whats it gonna be? This is the second year in a row you fail to make it to finals. Plus that’s following two years of messing up your song. Time to clean your mirror and have a long self talk. Time to band your waist.
It is really amazing that Young Bull, Jaydee and even Sye was able to find favor with the judges but Lady Star and Ghetto Prince could not. Something is definitely wrong with process and it needs urgent attention before bigger and more severe blunders are made at the semis and finals
