One could validly argue that Hunter and Karesa should have been eliminated for screwing up their performance. The only logical reason for allowing both artist to go through the semi finals is because of their veteran status. If the judges have the liberty to think out of the box and to be flexible with the criteria it would be fair to say that Hunter and Karesa deserve the judges consideration. Besides the benefit of being veteran calypsonians both have very good songs. In fact it is my opinion that Hunter’s “ Is the Asphalt “ is arguably the best calypso for the season- the idea is brilliant, witty, and a cleverly crafted calypso; the melody is also very strong. Karesa also has a very strong calypso – a song with depth and great satire- Rose Giving Me bloze with a shoes. Is Karesa’s song within the top five – Not at all. In fact Beno who also made a boo boo during the quarter finals has a very good song maybe stronger than Karesa’s ’s yet he did not win the judges favor just because of that error which was fatal for Beno but not Karesa or Hunter.

In this era of blatant and obvious injustice in Dominica – where what is right is wrong and vise versa , one would think that basic decency and fairness would take precedent. After all the calypsonians chant down biasness yet right within the calypso operation there is obvious preferencial treatment for some and disregard for others. Why display flexibility for Hunter and Karesa and not Beno. If seniority takes precedent then I hope the relevant authorities take heed of Sye’s lyrics and give the senior Citizens Mr and Mrs GON Emmanuel special attention.

Thanks God for the commentators iwas able to listen to the show and get a good picture of what went down.I don’t won’t to dwell too much on the pass;but i will only touch on how Dominican treat people to suit their agender, that’s all i will say for now.
    Dice get no brake, yet he still do what he do with the class of a champion;
It is not the song, but the way one brings out his song, that makes him king.
That’s why i Love my Ganstar King.
Those that mess up and those who got favour in the eye of the judges, will focus on themselves and stop trying to kill Dice. The cream always rise to the top.

All I know is these so called calypso singers need to go back to the drawing board.

The radio commentators at the two radio (Q95 & DBS) stations need to get a live with all the noise and mad statements they offer to the public.

A radio commentator job is to draw a picture for the listener. That was so lacking from the commentators.

By the way the back up band did go off key couple of times,I donot know if that was because of the singer or just poor musicians.

The breathing techniques of the calypsonian are also poor.

The use of vocabulary by the song writers a left to be desired as the songs to not add to the themes.

I say all of this to prove the standard of singing calypso is very low and can’t penetrate the caribbean market.

I beg the question which DA calypsonian have made a name for himself on the international calypso stage? I can’t recall one !!!!

These calypsos are only for local consumption with a life spam of about 6 weekes, which makes up the carnival season.

      • Anonymous
        January 23, 2012

Calypso Lover I am one that have seen most of the great calypsonians the caribbean has produce.

Just to name a few for you SPARROW,BLACK STALIN and CHALKIE from T&T… SWALLOW,SHORT SHIRT and OBSTIE from Antigua… Mighty PEP and INVADER from St.Lucia…. Winston Soso from St.Vincent…..Red Plastics Bag and GABA from Barbados…. I can go on and on….Please do not forget ARROW out of volcano Island.

You claim Hunter has a hit song in the caribbean, could you please list the song name and year of hit.

By the way I am from the Island of T N T…I have heard and seen the worst and best in my home town.

I have attended music school so I have an idea about singers and music.

I am not writing because i want to write but I do so because I have made what we call constructive criticism.

If what I said is wrong then prove me right.I take time off to follow carnivals thru out the world.

I think the Islands with the highest standard are 1) Barbados, 2) St.Lucia and 3)Trinidad.

Antigua for some reason has drop a touch.

Dominica level may well be in the tail of the caribbean ( Grenada,Guyana and St.Kitts).

Why did Hunter go through after blundering?
Why did karessa go through after repeating one verse twice?
Why did Logars go through after making errors and holding his head trying to tear it off after realising his mistake?

    January 22, 2012

De Rose had to be selected. His song is great and he delivered on the night. Judges you are blind and deaf towards the performances of certain calypsoinas. Some of the big guns made alot of errors under pressure and they still went through. sacre bias.

  28. Justice
    January 22, 2012

The judges have to go back to the drawing board with their decisions. It is time the rule “the judges decision is final” be revoked. It was so unfiar that Hunter, Karessa, and Logars forgot thier lines and yet they were sent to the next stage while calypsonians like De Rose, Trendsetter, and Sugar S and Lady Star who peformed so admirably could not get into the spotlight. Rule for one should be rule for all. You forgot your lines you should axed. Ferdina please have workshops with the judges to inform them of following the judging policy and criteira and avoid allowing their feelings to cloud their judgement.

    • En Ba La
      January 23, 2012

Are you thinking quality or quantity which one? I am no judge but common sense would make me think that this is just looking for GOOD calypso for a competition.

There are criteria for judging and I would think that forgetting the line or repeating a verse does not carry that much weight at THIS STAGE of competition.

By the way SOUL PUSS – I love this song. I had it in my head all day today. And how I can support is by purchasing a CD – my money is already on its way for my calypso CD

DNO, we deserve an explanation as to why in a competition of the 21st century where performers got all ways and means to perfect their act on stage are making mistakes by repeating verse, line and chorous and yet they are given the nod of approval to move to the next stage of the competition; is it because they are come back kids, or their name? why is it that those who perform without no error on stage are brushed aside in favor of those who blunder? Dominicans we need to debate this matter; had it been King Dice that would serve a good reason for these judges to cruxify him. OH WHAT A SHAME ON PERSONS WHO THE DIFFERENT PUBLICS DEPEND ON FOR GOOD JUDGEMENT AND HAVE FAILED US

I honestly do not think a good calypso should be thrown out of the competition because a verse was sang twice, I do not believe so.

I saw something similar happened to De Bobb last year, and it was very disappointing because “back to de drawing board” was one of the best calypsoes for the season and it did not make it to the finals because of a silly mistake.

I think the judges are maturing in their judgements and i need to give a thumbs up to them for that.

A song with good lyrics, melody, diction, delivery and presentation cannot and should not be thrown in the waste basket because a verse was repeated. I think this is just nonesensical.

On another note, i thought Booplay could have made it, but competition was tight, so I am not crying foul on that one. Booplay will come stronger and better next year.

I am happy for Picky….this guy can sing….no force, it comes so naturally. This is what one refer to as a natural singer.
