The Division of Culture has released a new video entitled Sennsé Domnik. This mini-documentary gives some insights into the lives of some of the most revered sennsé costume builders from various locations in Dominica, highlighting similarities and differences in their practices.
The journey begins with the acknowledgement of its African origins and the various customs and beliefs that brought about the use of this unique costume and then enters the world of the builders, discussing everything from their personal backgrounds to building methods, commercial aspirations, opinions and concerns.
Sennsé Domnik is not an instructional “how to” video. Rather, its purpose is to create a greater appreciation for the work of local sennsé costume builders. It is hoped that this video will open the doors for sennsé costume building to become an economically viable industry.
