The Archives Unit of the Library and Information Service of Dominica is pleased to present to the general public of Dominica, as well as visitors, from Monday, October 25 – Friday October 29, 2010 (9 am to 4 pm daily), an exhibition featuring newspaper collection dating back to 1821.
This exhibition, “News from the Past”, which is a first for the Archives, is aimed at highlighting the newspaper collection. The exhibition will illustrate through copies, photographs, and some of the originals, various newspapers published in Dominica from 1821 to 1977.
The exhibition also aims at sensitizing the public to the role of the Archives in preserving and making available the documentary heritage of Dominica so that generations to come will have access to the historical records of the country.
A booklet featuring the publishing history of newspapers in Dominica will also be presented. The information, given in story form, tells why the newspapers were published, what they hoped to achieve, and what was expected from the reading public. In some cases, the reason for ceasing publication is also given.
The stories gleaned from the announcements of the first issue, from editorials and other articles in the newspapers; give a sense of the politics and social life and customs of the times, as well as the literary pursuits of the population. The booklet will be available for a contribution of $5.00.
We welcome the general public and encourage them to visit the exhibition at the Archives, located on the top floor of the Documentation Centre Building.
not a sharp right sorry, a sharp let. My apologies.
The documentation center is the building next to the Arawak House of Culture. The entrance to that building is through the gates of the ministerial building then a sharp right and you will see the door. It is above the post Office at the entrance of the Ministry on Kennedy Ave. And if you let Dominica long it is opposite The Pound on New Street.
You can contact the chief Librarian at the National Documentation Centre situated on ministry grounds, upstairs the post office building. Tel # 1 767 266 3408
