One of the biggest aspects of the annual Emancipation Celebrations in Dominica will take a different twist this year.
Representative of the National Cultural Council, Charlene White-Christian said the annual Golden Drum Awards Ceremony will take a new format: “red carpet style”.
She was addressing the launching ceremony of Emancipation Celebrations 2015 held at the Old Mill Cultural Centre on Wednesday.
The Golden Drum Awards, which is in its 33rd year, is being organized by the Cultural Division and the National Cultural Council. It recognizes those who make significant contributions to the development of Dominica’s culture.
“This year we are trying to have the Golden Drum Awards Ceremony a little different from the traditional way,” she stated. “We have decided to improve somewhat on the ceremony and we have decided to create a red carpet event. ”
She pointed out that a photo centre will be created for the awardees in the foyer of the Arawak House of Culture, where the event will be held.
“So we will set up that foyer with a beautiful back drop and we are inviting the media to be there from at least 6:30 pm to at least 7:30 pm so they could have photos of the awardees when they are coming to the Arawak,” she explained. “We are hoping that everyone will appreciate it, we are really trying to lift the standards of the activity.”
Meantime she revealed that seven will receive Golden Drum Awards in the fields of Folk and Contemporary Music, Art, Dance, Folk Dance, Pageantry, Indigenous Culture and Folk Theatre.
Seven will also receive special recognition awards for their contribution to Dominica’s culture within a ten-year span.
“These awardees will come from the Folk Culture area, from the drumming area, dress making, garment and design as well as contemporary music,” she explained.
The event, which will feature performances by award winners and other local artistes, will be held on Saturday, August 1 from 8:00pm.
A cocktail for awardees and invited guests will be held afterwards.
The event is open to everyone and a semi-formal dress code is required.
Emancipation Celebrations, which commemorate the abolition of slavery in Dominica, run from July 22 to August 7.
Come on where is the creativity from the Division of Culture.
“RED CARPET” a la Hollywood????
Then we criticize young people for copying the american lifestyle and discarding our tradition and heritage.
Laybar ka travail. So we must have a red carpet. Stupes!!!
I would prefer gold rug style you call that royalty and they need some pretty fair skin chicks in g strings to throw roses at the feet of the seven.
So… who are this years’ awardees?
So much politics in this distabled counry and unfairness of political victimization, hope the ones that deserve the awards receive the award.
