Heritage Day to be celebrated in Warner

Press conference announcing Heritage Day 2012

A cultural gala, exhibition, the awarding of a cultural elder and the launch of a sweet potato festival are among activities for this year’s Heritage Day celebrations which will be held in the village of Warner.

The event, which is carded for Sunday October 21, will begin with a Church service from 10 am on the Warner playing field.

Several persons who have made outstanding contributions to the community will be awarded including the Cultural elder award which will be bestowed upon Henry Alexander.

Patrons will also be treated to a variety of dishes at the sweet potato festival including sweet potato cheese cake, sweet potato hash browns, grilled sweet potato, roasted baked potato, sweet potato wedges and fries, baked sweet potato with salad, spicy sweet potato fries, sweet potato pudding and pies and sweet potato with salt fish.

Meantime, Chairperson of the Warner Development Committee, Jennifer Julien Laudat says arrangements have been made to address traffic congestion with the construction of a new link road into the community.

“We are pleased to inform persons who are willing to come to Warner that they will be able to drive freely right through, coming through the village … so the idea of any kind of traffic congestion which may have been a deterrent to persons …  this is not going to be the case because we will have our new link road linking the cul-de-sac,” she revealed.

Entertainment will be provided by the likes of the Warner Jing Ping group, the Massacre Cultural Group, the Flamboyant Dancers, Henry Ettienne (2012 DOMFESTA Song Contest winner) the Paix Bouche Cultural Group and Drummers, a-three-year old belle dancer and the Midnight Groovers

Heritage Day 2012 will be held under the patronage of His Excellency the President of Dominica Eluid Williams, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Culture Minister Justina Charles and Community Development Minister Gloria Shillingford.

Warner residents are hard working. Farming is one of their main form of livelihood. But for the past decade and more, it is this inefficient DLP Govt. that has brought Warner and its villagers to their knees.

Poverty has increased ten-fold. The living standards of the villagers have gone down and down and down. Heritage day in Warner should remind people of the continued struggle to influence Govt. to invest more heavily into the Agricultural sector and so ease Warner citizens of the economic burdens facing them everyday.

After Heritage Day in Warner, Govt still would not see it fit to seriously pay more attention to the plight of farmers and farming communities. They will still neglect agriculture and villagers will continue to face hell.

Cost of goods and services rising, production decreasing, farmers living their holdings, money scarce, unemployment on the rise. Continued poverty. Begging mentality in operation, which works in favour of the lazy, incompetent greedy, selfish Govt.
