Honychurch wins regional award

Honychurch

Renowned historian Lennox Honychurch, Ph.D has received the Caribbean Award for Excellence in Public and Civic Education, becoming the first Dominican to obtain the prize.

The awards have been held biennially since the first one was meted out in 2006, but as of 2011, it will be held yearly.

Raymond Ramcharitar, corporate communications manager at the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence, reported Friday that Honychurch was awarded for his work in history, creating sustainable tourism environments and for restoring forts and heritage sites in Dominica and in the Caribbean.

Honychurch was selected for the award by the Caribbean awards’ nominating committee for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), of which OECS Ambassador Charles Maynard, serves as chairman.

Honychurch is among three recipients named for the award this year. The two others are from Trinidad & Tobago: Kim Johnson, Ph.D obtained the Caribbean Awards for Excellence in the area of Arts and Letters, while Professor Surujpal Teelucksingh was awarded the Caribbean Awards for Excellence in Science and Technology.

Congratulations! It is wonderful that you have pieced together Dominica History for everyone, especially the children. I have been keeping up on your works through your internet site. I have tried numerous times to reach you but have had no luck. I have questions about Pointe Mulatre Estate. I lived there in 1962 and now live thousands of miles away. I would really like to hear about the area now, especially update on the old plantation house where we lived with Mr. Blumquist. If anyone can find the time to write, I have a number of questions and a wonderful history to tell. [email protected]

Lennox, Thanks for all you have done to inform and help to guide us the right way. There are so many others who claim to be historians but kept their information in their chastity belts, because they heard that knowledge is power, so they would not share. Thanks for caring, Thanks for sharing.

Congrats, Lennox! Keep up the good work! You do it so well! Every time I listen to or see your presentations, I wonder whether you have a few “understudies”. Such a wealth of information should be “passed on” for the benefit of our history students. We MUST make full use of modern technology to preserve our rich history. Let us remember that no one is indispensable! God bless!

I was reading a book and it mentioned something about the “Dominican Story” and then I remembered when I was young, they had that series on DBS…. what happened to that??? They should do that again. I used to love it as a kid.. they had drama and sound effects? Wa go on with this show? I think now is the most appropriate time to bring it back.. because many of our young persons (from 30 go down) do not know our story. Bring that back Honychurch and DBS..or Kairi or Q or whoever… tv even. Lets do that again. I will listen for sure.

Well sorry but I cannot give any praise to a man who will stand by and says nothing about the fact that a historic building and its surroundings is about to be savaged by roosevelt skerritt. Do the people who gave this award know about this disgraceful, deafening silence on the part of mr Horneychurch as it relates to the president’s residence?

Sound reasonings my bredrin, brings to mind a famous quote by His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I the First conquering Lion of the Tribe of Juda

“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”

not as dumd as you because you and the rest of your ilk don’t even understand the role this man has played in trying to prevent independence from coming to Dominica and the amount of inaccuracies he presents.

Negativism on the brain, you call that.

Lennox has played is part and given copaceitc contribution to Dominica,

Others give what they have: Mepuis from the Crab-in-the-barrel mentality. “Anyone who rises to the top is fair game, because I am at the bottom.” Drop that attitude, brethren. It can only keep you in the pits.
