Some of us Dominicans are not proficient in speaking Patois – Kweyol language. We grew up in an era and an area where this language was hardly spoken, if never and not in the home. In fact, it was not then appreciated as it is today.
The language we spoke was generally English. It was unheard of to as much as consider it being taught in schools. Patois was regarded as “broken French.”
I am aware that those who reside in the villages, exception, Marigot and Wesley spoke patois. Those parents spoke it to their children, neighbors and friends. Some also, when shopping. Some people spoke nothing else than Patois as we called it. Consistently speaking it, one will become proficient in it.
Some of those who resided in the town and neighboring areas also did not speak Patois or not much of it. It was not spoken in the school yards.
The concern of some parents was, if their children consistently spoke Patois, they would lapse in speaking proper English. No one should blame them for that. Therefore, Patois had its place where it was spoken and by whom.
Those who could not speak proper English were comfortable speaking Patois. I recall some people, the helpers in our home, if you know what I mean, would speak Patois. I had a hard time understanding them and speaking it.
Nevertheless, I learned a few words and can speak it but not as proficiently as some others. I cannot write it either.

We knew it was called Patois in those days; not Kweyol. Kweyol is the French word which originated from Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Sorry folks, Dominicans should have stuck to the original word, “Patois” which would be unique to us and should not have copied another. Furthermore, they spoke Patois differently to Dominicans. Someone introduced it to Dominica as Kweyol. I wonder who was the culprit?
When some Dominicans get together they love speaking Patois and giving the jokes. The jokes in patois are funny and make us laugh.
Whenever some of us are out in public and we wish to say something confidential, yes, we rattle along and take pride in speaking it, what we know of Patois so that those who are not Dominicans will not be able to understand.
However, there are some words that are French words and if there are French people near they could understand a few words.
We only do this in public and not in private nor in a social gathering for as taught, it is bad manners to speak a different language while in company that others do not know and understand. Furthermore, they could get offended and think we are speaking about them.
All the same, what you now call Kweyol is part of our heritage and it should be appreciated.

      I like your comments ;
May I add this, for information only :

The word “patois” is french and refers to any “local language”.
therefore there are many patois spoken in the different regions of a country.
Creole is the name of the patois spoken in the( french) west indies.
For the reasons you know, it is also spoken in Dominica and St Lucia

Creole is not a dialect – Creole is a language

      • Anonymous
        October 25, 2013

You are correct. This is the meaning of dialect which I looked up:

        Dialect –
Regional variety of a language, with differences in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation
Language spoken by class or profession: A form of a language spoken by members of a social class or profession; nonstandard of spoken language.
Romance dialects such as French and Italian.

Nothing here stated about Patois or Creole. :)
