Kalinagos to showcase indigenous cuisine

Kalinago food will be on display on Saturday, as the island’s indigenous Indians showcase the results of some of their traditional recipes.

The planned Kalinago Food Exhibition, organized by the KARIFUNA CULTURAL GROUP, will be held on SATURDAY 24th MARCH 2012 from 4pm to 6pm at the Nazarene Church Ground in Bataca, Kalinago Territory.

According to the group, the food exposition represents the culmination of a week-long workshop in which 20 participants were trained in the art of traditional Kalinago cooking and cuisine.

The organisers say the exposition provides the participants with a chance to showcase their culinary talents and skills in Kalinago food, and allows members of the general public the opportunity to enjoy free samples of authentic Kalinago cuisine.

The cultural group says free samples of all the traditional food and drinks on display will be made available to persons who turn up to support the initiative.

Those wrapped parcels looks like our conkies, sweet potato, coconut, spices, a little flour/cassava and sugar, wrapped in banana leaves and boiled. Hope they have a great turnout, sharing cultures is the way to understanding and appreciation of our oneness.

Very interesting. I wish that I was in Dominica. I would like to know about their different dishes. It would be a good idea to publish a Kalinago cookbook. That is so exotic; extraordinary.

This must be highlighted to be one of the many initiatives taken up by the cultural group. Thats the true essence of culture: we must live the experience, not just talk about it. Its part of a cultural awareness, not necessarily for a defined grouping. Excellent job Karifuna.

I think after that exposition, they should look into opening resturants in both towns, it would be the best way to showcase their culinary art, it would also help the nation, to have another choice than that kfc and pizza that is making Dominican get so fat.
ignor the haters they just looovve their kfc.
Good luck to the Kalinago cuisine.

I am so pleased to see this, I always enjoyed the Kalinagos work habits and the wonderful healthy food they would cook. The green dish is called Kanki and it is like a power bar. One or two of these and you don’t feel hungry for the whole day. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous year. Jah Bless P.S. Your Kalinago Queen is lovely.

So you only love your country and not the people. Come on idiot, give the queen a break. Since when Queens ever comment on anything? Don’t hate our Queen. Remember she will be reigning for a year.
