Custom official welcomes canine unit

One of the dogs of the new Canine Unit

Comptroller of Customs, Roderick Deschamps has welcomed the introduction of two specially trained Canine Units to the Customs Department.

The dogs, Ben and Max, are expected on island next week and come as part of a $606,800 equipment and training support donation from the United Kingdom to help fight the drug trade.

Deschamps said that the two individuals have already been chosen to be part of the Canine Unit.

“The Canine Unit is something of tremendous interest to Dominica and I must thank again the British Commissioner,” he said.

He added, “Presently we have already selected persons to be part of the Canine Unit and we expect these officers to be extremely committed and be very dedicated to that task. We also had some screening tests done to make sure that we choose the critical and the right people to be part of that unit.”

He said that a Trinidadian instructor is expected to train the officers who will be added to the Canine Unit soon after the animals arrive in Dominica.

Got good laughs from blogger Irie. But seriously folks, a dog doesn’t have to be a German Shepherd or any kind of huge dog to be part of a K-9 unit.

I’m sure most of you who check out Discovery Channel or Animal Planet right here in Dominica, you would see that some of those dogs are quite petite. What matters most is the TRAINING they receive. All dogs have marvelous sense of smell, but truly some breeds excel at search and rescue, others at retrieving, and still others at sniffing out illicit drugs. They just sit by the ‘guilty’ bags until further action is taken.

I hope the Customs Department put policies in place to guide and protect these dogs from being targeted. The community welcomes any inititiatives to safeguard this country against drugs, crime and violence. Much Success

After the food that Britian will deliver with these two dogs finish, and the officers start feeding them leftover KFC and white rice i suspect that them dogs will not be able to detect nothing even if they in the middle of a ganja field. Them police, custom and coast guard doesnt appreciate anything good…just look how they mess up any brand new vehicle they get much less for 2 little dogs. LOL i hope we dont have to form no search party to go look for Ben or Max when they decide enough is enough !!!!!

I think it’s a good idea for our country especially in detecting this illegal trade. I”m glad they did not give it to the other security service because of the corruptness within from the head down.
The officers as you said, should be screened properly and that they take his job in this dept very very seriously, as this would kurb this illegal drug trade in our country. So once again, I see this as a positive step for our country and the authorities in getting this project done.

Same in the UK (prison for animal abuse).

The UK have the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Just because they cannot talk does not mean that they don’t have feelings.

Our dog is loved and cared for. She looks after us, so we look after her.

Now CATS, do not like, but would never hurt one.

My goodness you took the words right out of my mouth. I am animal lover to the bone and I pray that they treat these dogs well. Just a handful of Dominicans love animals, it makes sick at times to see how we treat our animals in Dominica. No love!! They better understand is not ‘gatawass’ dogs they have there and dogs accustom to good treatment. Please I pray somebody check on these dogs periodically, that they eat properly and the sleeping quarters is kept clean and comfortable.

lol, that i have to say is the worst british accent i have ever red, english doggies in dominica, i brought my english doggie to domnica, he was a sausage dog, he loved dominica, he thought lizards where amazing oh and crabs on mero beach, you are right though, i remeber some one telling him mash, and he just stood wagging his tail, as mash in the uk mean mashed spuds [potatoes].

but i always wondered if he understood all those other dogs in wall house when they barked, because did they bark with a dominican accent??

A “yank” is an American, not an English person.

      • Irie
        March 17, 2011

sigh, yes short for yankee used principally during WW2 to describe american soldiers. But when we say ‘yanking’ in dominca it is associated with attempting to speak with a foreign accent, relax and enjoy de kicks. I was just attempting to spread some humour not trying to be politically, geographically and linguistically correct. Peace.

Yes, in the UK people do respect their dogs, and they do have rights. The Canine Unit should shop in SaveALot. They stock a variety of doggie foods and treats.

ahhh you all being a bit hard on yourselves my lovely dominicans, not all dominicans dislike and are nasty to doggies, i knew quiet a few people who loved there dogs, i rescued one from the side of the road, and i brought her back to england with me, yes a dominican street dog got out of dominica.lol

Yes us British are a bit silly with our dogs, but the reason is, they live in the house with us,because it gets to cold and wet for them to live outside. my hubbie who is dominican understands that now we are living in the UK and not in Dominica

They become house trainned, and yes they do actually ask to go out to do their business, they become like part of the family, but i know some Dominican people that do the same wih their dogs.

I think these doggies will have the best of care, you have some lovely vets in dominica to over see their care, and i am sure they will be loved and looked after just as they where in England.

This is great news! Perhaps they could use these two dogs to try and track Shanice Jermot!! Dogs are brilliant at finding drugs and people. Shanice will have been missing for one month on Thursday this is far too long. Let’s get a helicopter as well, let us find this missing child.

    • what the hell are people thinking

there drug dogs they cannot track a person even if there lifes depended on it ( unless the person role in cocaine before they run away

These dogs are not trained to track people. They are specialized in sniffing out drugs caches and are mainly employed at points of entry such as sea- & airports. …watch out, they are good!!
