Comptroller of Customs, Roderick Deschamps has welcomed the introduction of two specially trained Canine Units to the Customs Department.
The dogs, Ben and Max, are expected on island next week and come as part of a $606,800 equipment and training support donation from the United Kingdom to help fight the drug trade.
Deschamps said that the two individuals have already been chosen to be part of the Canine Unit.
“The Canine Unit is something of tremendous interest to Dominica and I must thank again the British Commissioner,” he said.
He added, “Presently we have already selected persons to be part of the Canine Unit and we expect these officers to be extremely committed and be very dedicated to that task. We also had some screening tests done to make sure that we choose the critical and the right people to be part of that unit.”
He said that a Trinidadian instructor is expected to train the officers who will be added to the Canine Unit soon after the animals arrive in Dominica.
Got good laughs from blogger Irie. But seriously folks, a dog doesn’t have to be a German Shepherd or any kind of huge dog to be part of a K-9 unit.
I’m sure most of you who check out Discovery Channel or Animal Planet right here in Dominica, you would see that some of those dogs are quite petite. What matters most is the TRAINING they receive. All dogs have marvelous sense of smell, but truly some breeds excel at search and rescue, others at retrieving, and still others at sniffing out illicit drugs. They just sit by the ‘guilty’ bags until further action is taken.
U OATA BUY LOTS OF PEDIGREE ENLAN GIVIN US FAT AND LAZY DOGS U KNOW WHAT WE NEED GERMAN SHEAPERD NOW DAT IS A GOOD DOG
great effort guy….keep up the good fight
I hope the Customs Department put policies in place to guide and protect these dogs from being targeted. The community welcomes any inititiatives to safeguard this country against drugs, crime and violence. Much Success
all you could get 2000 dogs, drugs still going to come in de place.to many bigger heads controling that sheet.
so if a man doh wash his carl properly dem dogs can smell it den… i hear dem ting nose deadly..
hhehehe so two male den… well maybe ben is a female, i suspect dem dogs gay that is why they send dem dominica

Way to go Customs. Sniff out those drugs and dealers.

i hope they utilize these contributions well
Trust me that nice doggy is not going sniff, sniff for you all. It looks too pampered and pretty to lower its standard. Drugs, ki drugs?
i hope that one doh end up at Wykie home as his pet……………. and the gov’t doh have to spen mucho money to buy gas to keep AC on for dog in car……………..leave me alone ehhhhhhhhhh
After the food that Britian will deliver with these two dogs finish, and the officers start feeding them leftover KFC and white rice i suspect that them dogs will not be able to detect nothing even if they in the middle of a ganja field. Them police, custom and coast guard doesnt appreciate anything good…just look how they mess up any brand new vehicle they get much less for 2 little dogs. LOL i hope we dont have to form no search party to go look for Ben or Max when they decide enough is enough !!!!!
ouuu…nice doggy…can i play with them when i am passing through?

weh boy… man cannot even walk with a piece of bacon in their pocket now to eat on the plane…
Wait a minute!! are you guys serious? is this ben or max?
hmmm .. dem ting must die
don’t worry, Blackmore not in K 9 UNIT again, so the nice puppies safe……lol
u go kill dem? idiot!
Like all living things must die…I honestly don’t get your point….STUPES!!!!
I think it’s a good idea for our country especially in detecting this illegal trade. I”m glad they did not give it to the other security service because of the corruptness within from the head down.
The officers as you said, should be screened properly and that they take his job in this dept very very seriously, as this would kurb this illegal drug trade in our country. So once again, I see this as a positive step for our country and the authorities in getting this project done.
awa da not no K9 unit ner more like K5 unit (Gata-Unit)…. but on d real it betta dan nothing…………………
gataywasss all d way
Very good move fr DA..long time we should have dem..we hv

i am giving these innocent dogs 2 weeks to survive in dominica, these dogs have special needs and i hope they choose the right officers to take care of them, the saga continues, much too come.
Please don’t say it like that!!!! I am concerned too but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they will get two very capable officers to be these dogs handlers.
LOL!!! Awa, let’s be more “positive” here.
may these two dogs set the precedence for respect of dogs in d/ca,,,, i’m calling on peeps from the diaspora who are back home to try n set up a committee that calls on such initiatives,,,, our dogs have or get no respect in d/ca,,,, kool wosh n kool bwah doing harry bella on dem dogs,,,, is bout time we show our dogs more love,,,, i like a dog so much,,, the say pit bull bad,,, last time i saw a guy slapping a full grown pit,,, n the look on the dog face made me feel for it,,, the pit even had it’s tail between it’s legs,,,, with that said,,, i don’t give an ish bout cats,,, them bastards sit whole day doing nothing,,, i had a cat n once while i was sleeping,,, i heard,,, ‘week week week week’ so i open my eyes,,, surprised to myself the cat was laying by the cupboard,,,, a rat enter the cup board n ran off from it also,,,, n that cat never budged,,, n they get so much love for doin nothing,,, in the u.s u can go to jail for 2 to 5 yrs for abusing a dog,,, abusing,,, u haven’t killed it yet,,,, but things like breaking a dog’s leg like we do for fun in d/ca,,,,, doh try dat up dere
MOTS, i sure you like cats too….MEOW!
if is the one i think u talking bout then i can’t do without it,,,, i pet it nicely all day if i have to
Same in the UK (prison for animal abuse).
The UK have the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Just because they cannot talk does not mean that they don’t have feelings.
Our dog is loved and cared for. She looks after us, so we look after her.
Now CATS, do not like, but would never hurt one.
aye K-9 thats nice sk you really did it this time nest get us some snow so we can have jobs
what a great joke
Well sa, Irie you have lyrics, you have me crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats what you call humour.
HMMMM in dominica ppl does kick slap n starve dogs ….but yall kno the UK dont tolerate doggy abuse! so yall better treat them right! im against animal abuse!!
My goodness you took the words right out of my mouth. I am animal lover to the bone and I pray that they treat these dogs well. Just a handful of Dominicans love animals, it makes sick at times to see how we treat our animals in Dominica. No love!! They better understand is not ‘gatawass’ dogs they have there and dogs accustom to good treatment. Please I pray somebody check on these dogs periodically, that they eat properly and the sleeping quarters is kept clean and comfortable.
TRue. dat. im an animal lover myself
Thanks for the retired dogs Britain. Not good for you anymore so the best place for them is Dominica…
Let’s see ifvit going to pay off or cost Dominica lot’s on proper dog food for the rest of these dogs life…
your an a** your just a fool a son of a b*t*h
Boss!! It takes one to know one…..
Bonja BOSS. you taking things too personal. De man can say what he want is his mouth.
u will get pressure.
lets hope they get treated better than most dogs in dominica

Two thumbs up!
yes I Deschamps…..lol
Cute doggy….
Just DOH tell those dog there MASH, doh give them fig and back n’ neck bones, and doh tie dem outside in de yard. Those dog british, and they come out where dog have rights, remember is england they come out so all you cannot talk to dem in patois, all you have to yank for them…”Ben, Max, that bloody suitcase looks a tad bit suspicious innit?”
lol lol
lolololololololol This sure was funny IRIE. Great initiative though, we welcome the canine unit!
YOU GOOD
Thanks for laugh! Lol
Boy ire you really crack me up boy you made me laugh so muc and what you said there is so true.
hahaha u make my day!
lol, that i have to say is the worst british accent i have ever red, english doggies in dominica, i brought my english doggie to domnica, he was a sausage dog, he loved dominica, he thought lizards where amazing oh and crabs on mero beach, you are right though, i remeber some one telling him mash, and he just stood wagging his tail, as mash in the uk mean mashed spuds [potatoes].
but i always wondered if he understood all those other dogs in wall house when they barked, because did they bark with a dominican accent??
Thanks for giving me a good laugh after a stressful day at work……HAHA…!!!
u have my co-sign,,, once mots cosign u then that was damn funny mate
ROFT… dat was good one
A “yank” is an American, not an English person.
sigh, yes short for yankee used principally during WW2 to describe american soldiers. But when we say ‘yanking’ in dominca it is associated with attempting to speak with a foreign accent, relax and enjoy de kicks. I was just attempting to spread some humour not trying to be politically, geographically and linguistically correct. Peace.
Shut up Sigh! Irie was funny, so do not attempt to burst his/her bubble.
Brilliant. We’ve all had a good laugh. Loved the way you mixed posh (tad) with common (innit).
Yes, in the UK people do respect their dogs, and they do have rights. The Canine Unit should shop in SaveALot. They stock a variety of doggie foods and treats.
lol
HAHAHAHA!!!!!! lol thats a good one,so true.
ahhh you all being a bit hard on yourselves my lovely dominicans, not all dominicans dislike and are nasty to doggies, i knew quiet a few people who loved there dogs, i rescued one from the side of the road, and i brought her back to england with me, yes a dominican street dog got out of dominica.lol
Yes us British are a bit silly with our dogs, but the reason is, they live in the house with us,because it gets to cold and wet for them to live outside. my hubbie who is dominican understands that now we are living in the UK and not in Dominica
They become house trainned, and yes they do actually ask to go out to do their business, they become like part of the family, but i know some Dominican people that do the same wih their dogs.
I think these doggies will have the best of care, you have some lovely vets in dominica to over see their care, and i am sure they will be loved and looked after just as they where in England.
You making my head hurt me!! LOL!!
That looking like a perfect manicou dog.
This is great news! Perhaps they could use these two dogs to try and track Shanice Jermot!! Dogs are brilliant at finding drugs and people. Shanice will have been missing for one month on Thursday this is far too long. Let’s get a helicopter as well, let us find this missing child.
there drug dogs they cannot track a person even if there lifes depended on it ( unless the person role in cocaine before they run away
These dogs are not trained to track people. They are specialized in sniffing out drugs caches and are mainly employed at points of entry such as sea- & airports. …watch out, they are good!!
i think u meant ‘roll’,,,, now didn’t u
Bloodhounds is what they need to track people.
That’s the dog in real?? ooooh dooogy doooogy…tell daddy what u smelling….lol.
I’ve seen many DEA K9 units, but I guess that must be the British version, papa.
