On Sunday, November 8th 2015, Dominica American Relief and Development Association (DARDA) celebrated Dominica’s 37thAnniversary of Independence with a National Day Gala held at Eastwood Manor in the Bronx, New York.

Under the theme of “Rebuilding Dominica Together After Erika,” DARDA hosted the event to approximately 250 guests – most of whom proudly donned National Wear.  Entertainment included cultural performances by “Know Your Culture Dance Group” (under the leadership of Sabeniah George Mingo) and a “Tribute to Dominica” performed by Justina Henderson (formerly of Tradibelle).  Guests were also treated to a surprise performance of “Kulture Nous” by Sonia Lloyd.

Since the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika, DARDA has been a driving force in organizing relief efforts in the Northeast.  Through our Google Wish List and in-kind donations collected at several drop-off locations, DARDA was able to send 150 boxes to Dominica filled with emergency and medical supplies, clothing, non-perishable food, baby supplies and other items.  In addition, recognized as an official collection point by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, DARDA also raised monetary contributions via our GoFundMe page and PayPal.

To date, DARDA has collected over $5,000 in physical goods and over $20,000 in monetary contributions including proceeds from the sale of National Day tickets.  At the function, DARDA presented a check for $21,625.29 to the Honourable Petter St Jean, Minister for Education and Human Resource Development.  All funds collected will directly benefit recovery and reconstruction efforts in Dominica.
