Darroux calls for reduction of roaming rates in OECS

roamingMinister for Science, Information, Telecommunications, Technology, Kelver Darroux, has urged ECTEL — Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority — to consider a reduction on roaming rates within the region.

ECTEL is presently meeting in Dominica and Darroux urged the organization to place “tremendous emphasis” on the matter.

“This has been a key agenda item for the last couple years,” he said at the launching of ECTEL’s souvenir edition of its 15th Anniversary Magazine on Thursday evening. “I believe it’s high time that we take the decision to advise the council of ministers to move forward in a very decisive way so that the consumers within the OECS territories can benefit from a reduction of roaming rates.”

Darroux stated that ECTEL should liaise with service providers on the issue, for the benefit of consumers within the OECS.

“I continue to encourage dialogue with the service providers so that we can reach an amicable resolution and at the end of the day, once the decision is taken, the consumers within the OECS territories will benefit,” he explained. “Because for too long, we’ve seen consumers complaining about high rates that they spend when we move from island to island just a stone’s throw away.

Darroux encouraged the committee to address the issue at the next meeting, carded for Friday, January 22nd, in order to devise an expeditious solution.

“And I believe ECTEL, with this mandate, has the responsibility to advise the council of ministers at our next meeting on the decision to move the process forward, as to the reduction in roaming rates,” he said.

Why do they call it roaming, anyways? That’s why it’s being charged. If you stop roaming you won’t be charged.

Why are we so concerned about OECS business when we cannot provide internet service to our children in all public schools? While roaming charges is a bunch of rubbish we need to take a look at our backyard before we look at regional issues.
