Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux is applauding the government’s decision to begin construction of the Marigot Hospital and has said that the project will be pre-designed by Montreal Management Consultants Est (MMCE)
Prime Minister Skerrit said recently that the government was considering using local funds to build the hospital because of the delay in receiving the funds which were committed by Mexico for that purpose.
“As you have heard, the Honourable Prime Minister uttered that we are seriously contemplating on using local funds to do at least the infrastructure and I really would like to clarify that we are not abandoning Mexico’s project,” Darroux said.
He added, “The long drawn out period in construction and of course, we’re all aware of the real anxiety, political and otherwise, this would have caused the residents in that particular attachment area. I think the decision to begin the hospital on our own, I think was long coming. I said that and people misinterpreted it but from where I stood, I think it was a very good decision.”
The Health Minister said that the government was meeting with the project manager of MMCE,…..”to now come up with a design that the Ministry of Health can now pore over and assign a fund. We are not abandoning the funds from Mexico; we will now allocate it towards buying equipment.”
The Mexican government has committed five million dollars toward the construction of the hospital.
Dr. Darroux go back to the records, and tell us which of the statements you made about building the marigot hospital is true, because there were many promises made. Marigot Hospital to become trauma centre

Health Minister Julius Timothy has announced that the Marigot Hospital will be remodeled into a trauma centre, the first of its kind in the country, to facilitate residents from Portsmouth to Delices.
There have been several calls to upgrade the Marigot hospital which is located in the vicinity of the Melville Hall airport.
According to the health minister the concept and designs for the Trauma centre are being finalized, with construction scheduled to begin next year.
“We are now in the process of organizing to build a new hospital at Marigot. What we have in mind because of the location close to the airport is to make it a trauma centre,” the minister said.
Timothy indicated that this was being done so that “accidents from Portsmouth to Delices will not clog up the Princess Margaret, those on that side would go to the Marigot Trauma Centre and the Princess Margaret hospital…
CONTINIUED-this hospital that is needed even more now than prior to Hurricane Maria.”
According to Skerrit, the hospital will be “smart” and will be climate resilient with independent electricity and water supplies that will continue to operate in the event of a natural disaster.
“The design of this hospital has taken all of these climatic conditions into consideration,” he said. “So we continue to thank the Government of Mexico for their continued support.”
The Marigot hospital was shut down in 2016 due to mold and fungus infestation. Before that, it was shut down because of a severe termite infection.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, has said that the final documents have been signed for the construction of what he described as a “smart hospital” at Marigot.
In March this year, the Government of Dominica announced that the Government of Mexico has committed US$5-million for the construction of the hospital and on Wednesday morning, Skerrit said they have been “very firm” on that commitment.
He stated that the Government of Dominica has finalized all documents in the matter.
“We have finalized on our end all the documents,” he remarked. “I was able to sign the last set of documents last night I have to submit to the Government of Mexico and we are very grateful to them for their continued commitment and so we look forward to advancing the construction of this hospital that is needed even more…
Some day logical thinking leaders will emerge and the Marigot Hospital will be built. Forget Dr, Darroux and his fake news. Forget the P.M. a change is coming.

My understanding was that the grant from the Government of Mexico for the construction of a “smart, climate resilient hospital” had been finalised and that the government was awaiting designs from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). This latest article says something completely different!
