Dennis Joseph on the late Ferdinand Frampton

framptonThe passing of Dominican media stalwart, Ferdinand Frampton, on Thursday Feb 21, evoked numerous words of recognition and praise for the man and broadcaster, from those who knew him personally and professionally.

As a former managing director of Dominica Broadcasting Corporation, DBS, Dennis Joseph knew Frampton in both capacities, and is well placed to make an assesment of the deceased media practitioner’s contribution to broadcasting in Dominica. Here’s what Joseph has to say about Frampton:

“Ferdinand was an effective, hardworking and pleasant worker who could be depended upon to deliver good results. In the newsroom he was a reliable fighter for seeking the facts and would fearlessly go where others would not dare and even at personal risk.  He was also a keen organizer of extra activities for staff helping preserve the image of unity and harmony.  His favourite radio program was the oldies shows which he hosted and displayed a wide knowledge of that music which was  never  equaled by any who followed.  He was one of the pioneer announcers of the DBS radio station’s Creole programming which began in September 1975 and with his brand of humour, wit and positive entertainment created the basis for an attractive creole adventure which at the time because of local biases against the ‘patwa” tongue  was a difficult thing to attempt.  He must be remembered as one who worked for the advancement of radio in Dominica and whose selfless service contributed to the development of others who he personally trained and an example for those who came after he retired.  He was one who supported my every idea as manager with vigor, energy and goodwill.  A caring soul and my  friend.”

We hope our young people will take a page from this loving, constructive, positive and fruitful human being. Dominica and the Caribbean countries on a whole definitely have lost a great pioneer in broadcasting. People like that, are very hard to find. He was never in any scandal.

May his soul rest in peace. We know his immediate family will surely miss him. God will give you the strength u need. Every precious soul when gone is very hard for us human beings to understand and we always ask, why? That’s why we have to love and appreciate our love ones when they are with us. Only the Lord God Almighty knows Why.

I hope our young and up coming young people, will take some positive pages from Mr Frampton and the other positive people we have and had in our beautiful DOMINICA. I never hear this man is any scandal. When we go on to meet our creator, what legacy will we leave behind.

May his soul rest in peace. When we loose positive and constructive human beings, it really is painful for the family left behind and the country on a whole.

He was my neighbor so some years ago when I lived at Point Michel, a loving man and always knows what he is about. May God strengthen his wife Joan and family in this time. Look up to God he is the answer.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my condolences to FF as I used to call him..He introduced me to the Dominican public when I left my home in St. Lucia to reside in Dominica at the start of my regional sojourn as a journalist/broadcaster. He was indeed a fearless fighter for the newsroom and I greatly appreciated the fact that he hardly held a grudge against anyone even after a “big quarrel”. “Nous Meme” was his baby before Felix and I would recall entering the studios ona Saturday night to do my show after his creole programme and he was always a happer go camper..I recall the days of going to Point Michel for the cricket games he would have organised involving the DBS team..I last saw FF at the Windsor Park Satdium when I visited Dominica on an assignment and had gone to watch the football game Dominica versus Trinidad and Tobago. Hew as still the happy go camper that I knew…May his soul rest in peace.

Had it not have been for Mr.Frampton, the kweole program on DBS would have never been. He was very instrumental in bringing Kweole programs to the airwaves, something that was unheard of. I was just wondering did he ever receive a national award for the outstanding work he did in broadcasting. I also remember him setting up the first ever local tv news broadcast.

Ferdinand Frampton was an excellent broadcaster. A man who brought a level of warmth to a radio station that is yet to be mirrored by anyone. He was a man who could walk into any department and get down to work. Mr. Frampton was always keen to help on grow. May his soul rest in peace.

Come on Dennis, I think Tim Durand could have equalled him on the Oldies, Goldies Show – ‘What are you doing Sunday?’ He was his own stalwart on his evenings with the “Country and Western” music programme and a very bright and eloquent news reader. When it came to news reading, he fell right into the shoes of Jeff Charles, Francis Andre, and the late Barnett Defoe.

This is Dennis Joseph’s views. This is the manner in which he saw him, knew him and when interacting with him at work. Allow him that privilege to pay due respect and recognition to the late Ferdinand Frampton who was a gifted and talented person and who deserves this praise.
Furthermore, you should utilize your common sense and good judgment (if you have any) and have respect for the departed, his family and those as Dennis who applaud him for his qualities.
The picture and the smile on his face depicts that of a pleasant person.
This is not the time to be negative or to bring someone else’s name into this. If you wished to comment negatively, you should have saved it for another time.
One of my principal is do not criticize the departed which is what you have done.  Let him rest in peace.

This is a true and sincere piece on Ferdinand. May I add his that whenever he made contributions to the talk showws his comments were always above the rest. I hope the Minister who insulted him during the campaign of 2005 had a chance to apologize. My sympathy to his wife and the entire family. May his soul rest in peace.

Mr. Frampton was indeed a media stalwart and one who stood for that which was right. Oh that the media practitioners of today would take a leaf from his book.

Very fitting for the late Mr Mrampton. I remember his creole radio program well, every Friday night from 7pm, called Nou mem. I got my inspiration and love for those old songs through him. He was an inspiration to me and a mentor even now as I’m a radio personality.
May his soul rest in peace.

“Frampton.” You made a typo. Not intentional but a person’s name is his treasure. Some people detest their names not being properly spelt. I wonder in his spiritual world if he minds or not? :) Viewing his picture, he does not look like the type of person who would mind and would consider it a minor error and no problem. :)

Thank you Dennis. This is the most fitting in analysis of Mr. Frampton’s life work that I have read or heard. My husband and I spoke of these very facts just this morning and lamented that these were not discussed either by his daughter or Matt.

The tribute in this article is befitting. Probably there was not enough time to discuss his qualities. In addition, the daughter especially may have left it up to others who personally knew him and worked with him.
