Relevance of library and literacy to be highlighted during Library Week 2024

This week, the relevance of the library and literacy will be highlighted as the Dominica Library and Information Service (DLIS) observes Library Week 2024 under the theme ”Libraries: Still Valuable, Still Relevant, Still Connecting People.”  The Dominica Library and Information Service(DLIS) comprises of the Documentation Center, The National Archives, Portsmouth Library, Marigot Library, Grandbay Library and Roseau Public Library.

Speaking with Dominica News Online(DNO) Chief Librarian (AG) Renita Charles stated that the aim of Library Week 2024 is to celebrate the valuable contribution of our nation’s libraries, librarians and information professionals, by promoting literacy through a myriad of library services and programs that encourage library use. By soliciting support, increasing membership, and highlighting the historical, and cultural data base particularly at the Archives, DLIS seeks to build partnership and open a portal to extraordinary experiences.

Library Week is an annual event, and according to Miss Charles,  a number of activities are planned to observe Library Week 2024 including a radio address, info talks, exhibition, health fair, ‘Infosplosion’, patron appreciation, community outreach and staff development among others.

Ms Charles encourages the public to participate fully in Library Week 2024 activities.

“Connect and visit the library, view the website, Facebook pages, make donations to the library. The library needs the support. The library is a valuable asset. We are still relevant, so hence we need the support from the public to be able run our activities, to perform the various services that we have”, Charles said.

Library Week 2024 will run from  May 13- May 18, 2024, at the various units of the Dominica Library and Information Service(DLIS).
