UPDATE: Dominica at #4 in vote for “Best Caribbean Island”

Dominica’s beautiful Emerald Pool

Dominica has moved up to the 4th position in the race to being voted as the best Caribbean Island in the USA Today’s Readers Choice contest.

The island is among twenty Caribbean destinations chosen by experts and the winner will be named Best Caribbean.

Puerto Rico currently holds the number one position followed by Curacao, St Martin, and Grenada.

On the USA Today travel website, the following description of Dominica can be found:

“On mountainous Dominica, it’s what lies inland that makes the island special. Two-thirds of Dominica’s original rainforest remains, as well as one of the few surviving groups of Carib Indians. The island’s volcanic roots remain very evident, whether on a hike to one of the biggest boiling lakes on the planet or while exploring underwater volcanic vents.”

Members of the public are being urged to cast their vote for Dominica to claim the number one spot.

Voting is live until January 6 and the winner will be revealed on January 8.

Best in terms of…? The increasing publicity D/ca is getting the past few years makes me nervous because I view mass tourism as inherently destructive. I know it’s important for the economy but I think due to the unique nature of the place tourism shouldn’t be handled here like it is in most other places. I am very happy there is no international airport, although there MUST be an easier way to get here (that doesn’t bring in massive amounts of people at a time) Besides, D/ca doesn’t yet have the infrastructure and accommodations to handle mainstream tourism.

totaly agree with you;dominica has to gradualy grow. i always look at an island like saint martin and i think it would be very sad to take the same track; i see that island like an ex beautifull lady now tired and overused (living night life for the past 30 years). today crime rate is the highest on the french side of all french territory the place is dry; the place they call natural reserve is so dirty: plastic botltes…. the last time i went had the feeling that the place had nothing more to offer

Shouldn’t we NOT vote in this, wouldn’t that just give an unfair biased opinion of our country?

shouldn’t the foreigners (tourists) be left to decide this?

For me it’s simple as this. Even if we do not win the number one sport, Dominica, yes Dominica is the best Caribbean Island.

Dominica is a blessed country, a land of many rivers valleys, streams and beautiful people.A God fearing nation. With many centurians, meaning that we have a story to tell the rest of the world. A land of natural beauty. The only with an indigenous population srong and firm. Go Dominica, Go and capture the number one position.
I Love my Country, despite our many trails and testing.

I have never been to Dominica but the unspoiled nature of the country is what I am after. I have read up on it and seen pictures. Water for me is very relaxing and there is so much of that there ,all these rivers and streams and waterfalls.

GO DOMINIA GO. YOU A ONE OF THE BEST ISLANDS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY HAVE CREATED. Beauty is not high rises, rail roads, fast foods, etc. DOMINICA, you are unique, we all go for the life in the fast lane in other countries, and not stopping to enjoy real NATURE.

I hope Dominica wins as number one in the Caribbean. Every other country is always calling us small, but big is not always the best. All Dominicans, please take a moment to enjoy our country, and we are inviting other people in other parts of the world, to come and enjoy NATURE with us. GOD BLESS DOMINICA, GO DOMINICA GO.
