Dominica parliament meets for first time after 2019 elections

The House of Assembly in Roseau

One of the tasks that parliament will perform when it meets today, for the first time, following the December 6th, 2019 elections, will be the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly.

It is expected that former government minister and Dominica Labour Party (DLP) election candidate, Joseph Isaac, who Prime Minister Skerrit announced after the election as the DLP’s choice for that position, will be formally approved by the DLP-controlled parliament. It is also expected that the DLP’s choice for Deputy Speaker will get the nod from parliament.

Isaac replaces Alix Boyd-Knights who was the longest-serving Speaker of the Dominica House of Assembly.

The oath or affirmation of office will also be administered to other elected and appointed members of parliament both on the government and opposition sides.

When the House meets today, Prime Minister Skerrit will seek parliament’s approval for supplementary estimates of expenditure for the year 2018/2019 amounting to EC 322, 193, 115.60

Several bills are also down on the order paper to be introduced at today’s sitting of parliament. These include a Bill for an act to amend the Income Tax Act, a Bill for an Act to amend the Offshore Banking Act, a Bill for an Act to amend the Money Laundering Prevention Act and a Bill for an Act to amend the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Today’s meeting is the First Meeting of the First Session of Tenth Parliament under the Commonwealth of Dominica Constitution and according to the order paper, the President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin, will address the meeting.

Parliament begins at 10:00 0’clock this morning.

Prime Minister, Sir Roosevelt Skerrit, I pray that God will continue to guide your work, as you and your governing body go on your quest for the betterment of our country and her people.

Let humility, trust, and obedience be the keys that will open the doors of all the fruitful objectives that He has pre-planned for our sake; and be sure to work at those objectives for His glory

Do not forget that as God’s servant–the agent He has called to do wonders in our country–your only success will be by His guidance, the only way that perfection and victory can be achieved.

@Elizabeth, I’m not much of a bible person but the prayer you wrote concerning the prime minister and country was wonderful people like you gives all others hope keep the good work going. Another thing take no notice of Francisco he is a jealous child looking to be love 😡

Thanks to you Man bites dog. I know exactly, what I am doing and I know who is guiding me–the negative rebukes cannot faze me–in fact, I fill for those who do it by their words or their thumb rating.

And as for Telemaque, I know what he has been after–you are right, he is a love-hungry person, but his conceited–proud and pompous–mentality makes it too hard for others to share Love with him

Don’t worry about being a Bible person, the fact that you acknowledged my prayer confirms that you are a person of God. The Bible will never be read by everyone in this World–especially most of those who were born blind.

Also, faith in God comes by hearing, and what we must hear is the Word of God–you have that privilege.

Where has the money gone. Skerrit need to get a fire lite under him in parliament. If he cannot answer to the people no approval

This makes the formal budget presentation for approval a farce if clearly, the government has no intention of honouring it and merely spends as it sees fit and simply gets that expenditure approved by rubber stamping it subsequently under supplementaries. Does the government actually exercise budget control? Me thinks not!
