Dominica was rated as number two in terms of the twenty top countries of immigration by proportion, according to the 2019 World Migration Report.
This information was revealed by Communications Officer for the International Organization of Migration (IOM), Maxine Alleyne- Esprit.
She said the Caribbean has one of the highest immigration rates, which is the movement of people outward worldwide of skilled and tertiary level educated individual.
“The World Migration Report of 2019 rated St Kitts and Nevis as number one and Dominica as number two in terms of the top 20 countries of immigration by proportion,” she explained.
According to Alleyne-Esprit, between 2017 and 2018, it was estimated that 9.5 percent of the Dominican population were migrants, whereas in Antigua the figure in terms of the number of migrants as a percentage of the overall population is 28.7 percent.”
“We are estimated slightly under 10 percent, whereas Antigua is close to 30,” she said.
Additionally, Alleyne- Esprit said globally statistics show that one in every 30 persons is a migrant.
“At least 3.4 percent of the global population contributes over 9 percent to global GDP. The evidence is also that migrants spend on average 85 percent of their earnings in their host countries, so whereas we have remittances and remittances generally accounts for just about 15 percent of the income of migrants,” she said.
Meantime Alleyne-Esprit said Dominica plays the role of both country of origin as well as host country, saying it possess challenges either way.

The people commenting here don’t understand this article. In fact, Dominica ranks very high because most Dominicans prefer to remain in Dominica. Proportionally, many more Antiguans choose to leave Antigua.
And how many Dominicans working in Antigua then. Perhaps they did not move there but are commuting? Get real man, Haitians coming here because it more easy but not for the wages because they could get far more even in Antigua.

The population of Dominica, at the beginning of Ms, Charles’ reign in 1980 was 75, 314. and 2019 it was estimated* by the U.N. at 71,852.
By comparison the population of Antigua & Barbuda over the same period grew from 73,,442 to 97,292. Antigua, like Dominica has also had its share of natural disasters during this time, particularly Storm Erica.
* In contrast to Antigua our government has not disclosed the population count of their latest census of 2011. Its own website Dominica.gov.dm says under this category:”info. not available”, which makes me suspect it was less than 70,000.
Likewise, the current U.N. estimate is suspect as I believe that after the effects of Maria and Erica the figure is closer to 60, 000. I would be delighted to be corrected by Govt. on this, of course.

Most dominicans? How many Dominicans do we have here now? How many did we have before Maria? You cannot answer because noone has conducted a census in the last 10-15 years. How can a country that has a birth rate higher than a death rate continue to be at the same population year in year out? Does that not tell you that every year we leave in droves? Every year the college and high schools have a graduation, majority of these youth do not find work. they stay here a year or 2 scrunting if they do find a job, then they leave. that is normal life here year in year out. if they stayed, we would have at least 100,000 people here. but noone knows. We definitely have less people than before Maria. How many dominicans living and working in St kitts, st lucia, antigua, barbados ? too many.
Our people are definitely moving in huge numbers to the detriment of the country and these individuals can’t be blamed. The blame falls squarely on those in authority in Dominica, and here I am not talking only government. For some reason mediocrity is the order of the day and qualified individuals are help back while party supporters and favorites, who are prone to be gossipers, but with now qualifications for the job are promoted. People are placed in very sensitive positions which if not properly managed may affect the health of citizens and visitors or even lead to the death of the same, and these individuals have not the basic requirements to do the job. This is serious and I have ask journalist to look into a particularly utility company in Dominica. Do your investigations and please do not wait until it is too late and we have a tragedy on our hands.

It`s a known fact that Skerrit who over stayed in office with his fake, failed incompetent Labour Government must Go, and they MUST take Skerrit with them. All this is to try and show that immigration from outside Dominica into our country is beneficial. I am not buying that. Beneficial perhaps for people smugglers but not to the population as a whole.
