Dominica records 33.2% drop in tourism for Jan-Sept 2018 – CTO; 4th quarter signals recovery – DDA

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the authority on regional tourism statistics and performance, is reporting an overall decline in visitor arrivals of 10% for Dominica, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten and the US Virgin Islands.

Between January and September 2018, Dominica, with a total of 40,650 visitors, recorded an overall drop of 33.2 percent in tourist arrivals

Visitors to the island from the United States of America (USA) dropped by 53.7 percent to 6,814. The total number of 6754 visitors from Europe represented a drop of 49.9 percent and visitor arrivals from from Canada decreased by  of 49.1 percent to 1, 244 visitors. Arrivals from other destinations totaled 24,838, a decline of 14.5 percent.

In a news conference earlier this week, CTO’s Acting Director of Research, Ryan Skeete reported that the Caribbean tourism sector is projected to record strong growth in 2019 on the heels of a stronger-than-expected performance last year.

“These destinations operated limited tourism amenities following the closure and renovation of major properties in the aftermath of the hurricanes in the latter part of 2017 which accounted for their poor winter performances. Some indications of recovery were noticeable in the summer period as the destinations managed to stem the pace of decline,” the report said.

The Discover Dominica Authority issued a release in February this year, headlined “Strong 4 th Quarter Performance Signals Tourism Recovery.”

“The months of October to December 2018 produced arrivals of 22,178 from all source markets, representing 35.3 % of total stay-over arrivals for the year which stood at 62, 828. This is an increase of 95% over the same period in 2017. Increases were registered at 91%, 113% and 78% respectively during the last three months of the year compared to 2017.”

Passengers arriving in Dominica on the first day of the cruise ship season in October 2018

The release also stated that the quarter also represents a marginal increase of 0.9% over the same period in 2016.

“November 2018 was the first month to show an increase over the same month in 2016, with an increase of 15.6 % over November 2016,” the DDA reported. “Arrivals amounted to 5,271 which is the highest number of arrivals for that month over the past 12 years of reported data, representing a record for the destination in that regard. December figures showed that the upswing continued, registering a 6.7 % increase over December 2016 arrivals.”

According to the DDA report, the year-end figure of 62, 828 visitor arrivals, represents a 13% decline over 2017 figures of 72, 228.

“This performance surpassed the projections given for countries which had suffered a natural disaster of the magnitude of Hurricane Maria during the previous year, as expected declines are normally in the vicinity of 30%. In addition, the 2018 numbers represent only a 20% decline over 2016 arrivals which is also of significance,” the release stated.

It may be necessary useful to point out that the figures presented by the CTO are for the period January to December 2018 while the DDA release covers the entire year.

A-Lass, everything that is good is going bottoms-up under this DLP government. Dominicans, am I to say that you all do not like the better things in life? Because you all keep on voting for the smae Gov’t in hopes of a better life! For 20 years now they have shown that they cannot produce anything good . This time around let’s show the world what we are made of.
All the tourism sites are closed or dilapidated.

Dominica needs a fleet of sea planes to land in Roseau and Portsmouth harbor. That way tourists can fly direct from Florida and Puerto Rico and have fun flying in a sea plane and landing on water. People may just take the plane for the experience. There are lots of sea planes in Alaska used to great effect. Before the main airport was constructed at Melville Hall in the mid 1950’s besides ships sea planes were one of the main ways to get to Dominica, they landed at Cane Field and in the south of the island by Scott’s Head. The government should use some of the millions from C B I monies to purchase at least 5 sea planes. It would also facilitate faster travel time and people would not have to overnight on another island just to get to Dominica. That is a big turn off to tourists. Just a thought and M H O. People may want to visit but when they see the conniptions of just getting there they change their vacation plans. Who wants to have conniptions visiting an island while on…

The late Booplay warned us that ‘Air Dominica’ was about to crash and there would be many casualties but we didn’t take hid. So now tourism, Ross University, Breezees Mart, Bello, Banana industry, Bellfast Palmolive and just about everything on island has severely suffered. Apart from the above I am hearing the ALL three Daroux ministers are now casualties, so to is Blackmore, Justina, Drigo, Petter, and others are political casualties of air Dominica because they didn’t listen to the call to help save Dominica. I don’t care who they try to put on the plane, the engine of the plane is very bad and they too will crash before they get on board. Here is the Everything Crash song so let’s all sing up as we wait for the death announcement from the Wesley Constetuency https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=everything+crash+song&&view=detail&mid=E13098A09B7D56545C70E13098A09B7D56545C70&rvsmid=C64E22E82B4AA1A2B46CC64E22E82B4AA1A2B46C&FORM=VDQVAP

So tourism dropped 33.2%, six years since we sold a box of banana to Europe, Ross University is completely gone, Citrus is all but gone, No more Bello, No more Dominica Colgate Palmolive / Belfast, Unemployment is on an all time high, as expected crime is up, PM best friend and probably partner in crime Maduro, is all but gone; 6 of 10 of PM ambassadors are either in jail or fighting court battle, his friend Baroness continues to bring more embarrassment to Da, as per report that she “breached the Commonwealth’s contractual obligations to Dr Ojiambo”in Dec. 2018, and may have forced the Commonwealth to compensate Mr. Ojiambo costs that will run in to at least £250,000. February 17, 2019

People who are not involve in the tourist industry, sometimes say what they think. The tourist industry is not what it use to be, number of ships calling to our ports have decreased. There are less tour guides, our country is not as clean as it use to be, tourist are complaining about the many old vehicles on the road side. Our town has very little space for wheel chair access, our botanic gardens? The gardens look more like a park than a place of botany, the gardens has remained the same for many years, dont not blame maria, the only things that are not there after maria are some of the big trees. There was never a rose garden, no fish pond or any other real beauty to the gardens, further more there is a street in the gardens which tourists complain about. What one can see in the gardens are the African baobab tree under which the old school bus is, the bamboo house, the banyan tree, the sausage tree and the parrots which one can hardly see. This one area that can be upgraded.

Sarcasm at its best. Yes, in Dominica we need comic relief to free our minds, even momentarily, from the daily miserable conditions of life visited on the majority of the populace by Skerrit’s misguided, autocratic, thoughtless policies. Even Skerrit and his ilk know that the trajectory of the country is pointing southward. Things are desperately atrocious. TIME FOR A CHANGE! Nineteen years of banditry and corruption is much too long. Enough is Enough!

Headline News: “Dominica records 33.2% drop in tourism for Jan-Sept 2018 – CTO; 4th quarter signals recovery – DDA”. What is it going to take this failed incompetent silly Skerrit, his band of 18 failed immature ministers & his blind followers all over Domininca shouting, “We love our failed, hopeless Childish PM Skerrit?” This is a low findings: where I sit within the ministry is much higher and appears that some within government and Skerrit’s own surrounding would not want to have the “true failed worrying statistics” go public. The statistics we understand from discussions is that the true record is in the region of 45%-48%. This is a sad state of affairs. Domininca now does not have sites of quality that will make a difference to attract and ensure that the visitors/tourists will come to Domininca. The only major distraction we have is on the top floor somewhere within the Prime (Odd) Ministers Office. Dont ask me who, go upstairs, find out yourself when the Red Clinic…

Shame on Robbie and Skerrit.

Rupert Sorhaindo wasn’t the tiny Island of St. Maarteen also destroyed by hurricane Irma? Well sir open this link below and try to spin it for us.
    http://www.looptt.com/content/st-maarten-port-saw-over-million-cruise-visitors-2018.

Mr. Sorhaindo you want us to blame the drop on poor Maria from Jan. to Sep 2018 but during that same time St. Maarten is boasting of increase sir according to this paragraph: “The acclaimed cruise port saw a 30.3 percent increase from May through July, when cruise visitations to the island are typically a bit slower”.

I also want you to spin this sir, you lover of Skerrit: “The latter half of 2018 also brought about the return to pre-Irma cruise arrival numbers. Port St. Maarten welcomed 646,431 passengers from September to December, indicating a 17.87 percent increase in arrivals from the same time period in 2016, a full year before Hurricane Irma.”

Take a loom at the picture of the cruise ship and you will see how bankrupt and ancient our labor government is. Only one cruise ship can be accommodated at a time. They built with no expectation of more than one cruise ship docking in Dominica per day. Have they ever seen Antigua? Then again if you out people who want see further than their fingertips in office what do you expect. Where was the thinking when this was being constructed? The same can be sand about the airport. Labor needs to go and tomorrow would be too much time for them.

      February 16, 2019

“Only one cruise ship can be accommodated at a time” That is a crucial statement. So let us go down memory lane. When the DLP government under Patrick John decided to build a deep water port from Tamarwhen to Fond Cole opposition forces said it could not be done and it was not needed. Aquatic club and Huckley Shillingford property was removed and PWD was supposed to be relocated. All kinds of agitation caused us to end up with a “Jetty.” That area called Woodbridge bay was the best location because of the topography of its continental shelf.. PJ did not give up on the plan just put it on the back burner. After May 1979 all hell broke loose and the plan was buried. Who built the present inadequate accommodation ? Now Skerrit has a plan to rectify the situation to accomodate 3 or more ships. And build an international airport. Already the B.B.B (Blue Bubble Blowers) gang bangers are saying pipe dreams.

Did I not read a few weeks ago that Dominica’s tourist arrivals was up and showing signs of further growth? Little St Kitts sees almost 40000 tourists in a week. Dominica is still talking of 40000 in a quarter. Having said that I must ask, do we have the infrastructure for more tourists? Labor is making business a sure failure. The environment for private sector investment is bad. The government is morally bankrupt. They have no idea. They are geriatric albatross trying to Starr the ship of state into calm waters. The DDA and their fuzzy mathematics just attempting to paint a rosy picture for the stark and bleak economic performance of the country. Every word and action from the Skerrit-led kleptocratic regime is to create a false narrative to put the government in a favorable light. What I’ve come to realize with Skerrit, his ministers and his lackeys is that they are very liberal with their lies and conservative with the truth. Everything they do or say is to sway public opinion in their favor. It’s a grave mistake to take any utterance, statistics or presentation at face value with these masters of factual inaccuracies. Clean up the place, construct a proper airport and seaport, build good roads and bridges, enhance Eco-tourism, embrace the cultural practices ( food, music, dances, local art & craft, etc.). Much more work needs to be done to capture Dominica’s fair share of the booming tourism market.
