Dominica reports total of 444 confirmed cases of HIV/AIDS since 1987

hiv-aids

Dominica is reporting a total of 444 confirmed cases of people infected with HIV/AIDS since the outbreak of the disease in 1987.

Head of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit, Alison Samuel, made that announcement during a two-day OECS Commission Capacity Meeting held at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) APU conference room.

“Currently, based on our data that we have collected over the years, we have  at the end of 2015, a total of 444 cases that have been confirmed HIV positive. That is, as cumulative from 1987 to 2015,” she said.

According to her, out of this total, there were some deaths, “so we have had a total of 159 accumulative people who have died over the years.”

Samuel said that the figures have been predominantly male.

“You have over 70 percent of male in these figures,” she noted.

She revealed that over 90 people are actively in care/accessing care.

“Every Monday whenever the clinics come up we have a percentage of that all anti-retroviral medication (ARVs),” she explained.

She stated further that 2030 is the target to eliminate HIV/AIDS for the entire region, “not just for Dominica.”

Samuel said also that a grant of US$103,000 dollars from the Global Grant Fund,
has been allocated for Dominica over a three year period, through the OECS Commission.

    ADMIN – DOMINICA NEWS ONLINE

Please stop correct your headline. HIV/Aids did not ‘outbreak’ in 1987. It was implemented by around that date. It’s about time that you took time out to look after your fellow Dominicans who NEED to know that truth. PLEASE STOP PEDDLING BULL. Here are some facts about the implementation of the ‘virus’:

That number seems to be a number that reflects safety. But we must all consider that to every reported case there are at least 3 people not aware that they have been transmitted. Protect yourselves and don’t let your belief in anyone become total trust where that is concerned.

I am sorry to say it appears that there is an aids epidemic in the island. In my opinion we must come out of the dark an educate the people the risk of developing the aids virus, and Tha is conducting work shop, conference in all communities, the media and so on. Citizens should be made aware of ways and mean they can protect themselves from the getting the aids virus. There should also be tough laws to protect others.

This is a slow death. all the men look dopped, they don’t know if they are coming or going. Now is it worth it. we bring on to ourselves so we must deal with it. pure stupidity

444 out of 70, 000 is not even 1% of the population. Also this number is from 1987 to 2015. Some people on here even try to insinuate that AIDS is a poor people disease. Boy boy boy it 2016 and we are still thinking such way. We need to educate the population especially the young ones. As far as I am concerned we should find a way to educate as young as pre-school. No one is safe. It could be worst.

Apparently you are not aware of the number of preschoolers who are being abused. Yes, sexually abused in Dominica. No, not by other preschoolers. We need to start somewhere. The young ones who are out there now do not even understand what is abuse, therefore they are not able to help their offspring. Sadly enough, you are not the only one who takes that approach to life. We forget that when we point one finger at others there are four more pointing at others. We must be our brothers keepers or we shall perish as a society. There must be a way to bring the message to the preschoolers. It is obvious you need some of that education you ask me to get. It is not too late!

Less than 1% of a population is not as bad as some is trying to make it. It is definitely not an endemic. There is still hope. Each one teach one. Each one help one. Start young!

Since 1987 – 444 cases of HIV cases in Dominica!

Thank God for the people who care enough to come together in conference to discuss this major health issue. Some progress has been made due to their dedication and that of others.

This problem did not originate in Dominica. It was brought to your island. It is not difficult to imagine matters being worse if marijuana was decriminalized and the restrains of common sense were further removed as tourists flock to the island for an even more uninhibited good time.

We celebrate the research that has been done and is on-going. We congratulate the hard work that makes treatment available. Not enough could be said to THANK those who work tirelessly in this field.

Only one more point should be made. If people would obey and live by God’s moral code as He has given it to us in the New Testament in scriptures such as Romans 1:26,27 and 1 Corinthians 6: verses 9,10,18, the HIV virus would disappear from the earth in very short time.

    • August 26, 2016

      Continuation:

This is the answer. There is no other answer. It should be taught in the homes, schools, and churches of the nation. Our governments should support it and encourage it. They should push it forward.

Nothing else will bring a lasting solution.

If God’s moral code had been honored in Dominica (and in my own nation) there would be no AIDS in our countries. When people walk away from the Word of God they walk out from under is protection. There is no way to change this. It is just the way it is.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

These people do not want any sort of illness to be eliminated. They are making a mint on medication and also experimenting on patients.
There is no way it will be eliminated by 2030, if the world continues. This scourge is here to stay. It will still continue spreading.
Let me further inform you. I do not know where you presently reside. It was reported on the Toronto News that the elderly are taking too much medication. The government knows it because the information came from it but what are they doing about it? Some of them take more than 4 and 6 types of pills, even more a day. This is what kills them.
I knew an elderly lady who took that much, even more. She had diabetes and high blood pressure. A few years ago I attended her funeral. If at all possible one can avoid any sort of drug/medication, it will be better for them.

Pre-marital abstinence and marital chastity. It is the normal way to live.

God has given us the blueprint for a happy life. It shows us some things are prohibited and off bounds. Please read: Romans 1:26,27. 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, 18.

Those who live according to God’s moral code find it works. It gives us a good life. My wife and I have lived this way – both before and after marriage – and have never been sorry. We have just celebrated 53 years of married bliss.

I would not be able to teach the principles of dynamic Christian living around the world if I could not demonstrate that they work in my own life.

It is a sad situation. This is another scourge. There is no cure for it just as there is no cure for cancer. Both could be stabilized or in remission for a while but this is all. However, they must be treated if the possibility is present.
A few days ago I saw a sickly thin woman. She told me she has a stomach problem and that she just came from the hospital for treatment. Then she told me she has AIDS/HIV. She appeared to be in pain and could not speak properly. She also said that she contracted it from a man that, she could have sued him but did not. She looked like she will not live long. I felt sorry for her and wished her well. As I went on my way I said a prayer that God will help her and also forgive her.
I saw her again today in the Mall. We only exchanged hello’s. As I passed her I prayed for her again. I am doing my utmost to pray for the sick, downtrodden and dying. Our day will come in whatever manner. Therefore, we must keep this in mind.

Reader, I wonder who is dumb or cannot read? I was responding to Wow’s comment that 444 equals 1 in 10. Let me break it down for you: If 444 cases is equivalent to 1 in 10, that would mean the population is 4440 people. Math teacher and I responded to the same comment.

Can you please tell me what percentage is 444 out of a population of 70, 000. You have yet to make the correction.

I do understand why you must line up every Wednesday for the Red Clinic. Education was not your strong point. Maybe you are not aware that Math teacher and I posted independent of each other. A small island like Dominica with less than 70,000 people has that many HIV victims? What if we were to add that number to the many cases that have not been reported? How alarming!

But then again that’s exactly what poverty does to people. When they poor and become dependent on the state, an individual or an organization they will do anything to get a money and using a condom is not a priority. Over the last 12 years that’s what Dominicans got introduced to. They have to beg for a scholarship, beg for cell phone and now they going to have to beg for their $300 to send their children to school. So when they beg and get, they have to pay later in kind, and we don’t know who has it and who doesn’t.

I know some don’t want to hear the truth but we cannot fail to connect HIV to poverty, as I am almost certain that the children of those who call us kakadoor and cockroach will not be victims because they do not have to go beg to survive like children of poor people

  16. Multiplier effect
    August 25, 2016

    Dear Ms/Mr Samuel
It is stated in the annals of epidemiology/HIV/AIDS one has to x the apparent # of cases by10 as their is usually a multiply of latent cases hence DA might well have 4440 . Consider globalization. D/cans are everywhere as our foreign affairs Minister stated we have doubled our diplomatic relationships. Sexually active D/cans & foreigners are crossing over more today than before the aforementioned .
In addition, the economic citizenship has x 30 from the 80\’& 90\’s and so has economic hardships hence more\” Bomb\” – the greater the transmission possibility.
Chew on that Samuel & the population.

This is so true it is scary!

People are afraid to get tested so the number of cases is probably higher than the number of confirmed cases.

My friend, if you know you COULD be positive please get tested. If you are positive get into treatment immediately. The treatment now is good and getting better. The sooner you start you will (1) give yourself a better quality of life (less pain and suffering), and (2) a longer life :!: And remember with treatment it gets better all the time because the medications are improving. Please go for it :!:

The rest of us should do all we can to inform people about how to access the available treatment, AND how to avoid HIV by adopting a safe and healthy lifestyle.

God bless all who are working in this field. Keep up the good work.

What is more painful about this report is the fact that before 2004, you would hear pastors, priests, preachers, government ministers and other groups were warning people about abstinence and promiscuity. But such has not been the case post 2004, after the death of Pierro, as the seed of unrighteousness and all kinds of evil and ungodliness as it were, seem to have been planted on the altars of Dominica. In fact before 2004, if any HIV / AIDS number was given, you know you could not hear the name of a pastor, priest, evangelist, bishop, government officials or top ranking names being a victim or contributor. But such is not the case today as not only can they not honestly address the problem, but they too might very well be contributing to the growth of HIV / AIDS. No wonder when you go to church today you can almost guess the sermon is going to be about “prosperity” or “God is good”. No wonder 1 Corin. 15:33 says, “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” ESV

    • August 26, 2016

”… when you go to church today you can almost guess the sermon is going to be about ”prosperity” or ”God is good…”

Unfortunately there are such ”churches” in the USA. Now don’t tell me there are places like this in Dominica or the Caribbean! These ”churches” are money making machines usually run by playboy ”pastors” dishing out feel good sermons based pop psychology. Their well heeled congregations are people who don’t want to hear about sin or be reminded of their lost state. But they are good givers so they stay in business.

Personally as an evangelist I would not go to one of these ”churches” nor serve their interests. But not to worry. They would not invite me! My kind of evangelist is avoided by them. I preach about sin, repentance,
the BLOOD of Christ, and being born again. I preach hell fire. Besides, I pray for the sick and cast out demons.

Oops! Now I will never be invited to Dominica.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill…

The problem is, that number can be doubled or tripled since it is based on data collected. What about the many that are infected but never reported? Another frightening thing is that of the amount of men that are infected. My God, our country is in serious trouble especially when one takes into consideration the fact that recently three top ranking men were allegedly involved in a sex scandal involving a minor. The question is, do we know who have what, whether they are handsome or ugly, whether they have dimples or not, or whether they may be pastors, evangelist, priest, bishop, farmers, carpenters, politicians, or police officers. This is a serious problem and it breaks my heart especially for minors that were abused by grown men that should do all they can to protect them

  22. August 25, 2016

Dear oh dear out of 70,000 people 444 people are HIV possitive?
It goes to show that people are not practising safe sex.
But lets see who infected them , i say two guesses . We blame thwt person for every other woes in our lives people take responsibilities for hour lives, five minutes of fun is a life time problem.

    • August 26, 2016

Don’t be deceived. There is no 100% safe sex outsider of premarital abstinence and marital chastity.

Even if people avoid sexually transmitted diseases there is always a penalty for sexual misconduct. Any type of fornication (illicit sex) leaves a psychological scar on the individuals. Engaged couples who plan to get married – regardless of how close they are to their ”big day” – lose two things if they disobey God. (1) a certain respect they could have for each other, and (2) the trust of each other they could be taking into the marriage.

There is a saying that ”statistics don’t lie.” As fornication increases the divorce rate rises. If you want a happy and lasting marriage build it on a solid foundation. My wife and I have just celebrated 53 years of a marriage that was based on God’s moral code, and continues to rest on that foundation.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.
