Dominica represented at Toastmasters International’s speech contests in St. Lucia

ToastmastersLogo-ColorDominica is being represented at this year’s Evaluation and Humorous Speaking contests, to be held during the Toastmasters International District 81 Conference in St. Lucia from October 17-19, 2014.

The actual speech contests take place on Saturday October 18, 2014 and Dominica is being represented by members of the local Toastmasters International Club, Nature Isle Toastmasters.

The representative for the Humorous Speaking contest is Matilda Popo, who won the Territory Contest in this category. Matilda Popo is a dynamic and energetic toastmaster who brings a new dimension to public speaking through her skillful and effective incorporation of humor in her presentations. In this contest, the speech must be a thematic in nature with vocal variety, gestures, and speech content all playing a part in its success.

Dorothy JnoBaptiste will be the representative for the Evaluation contest, who won locally through her skillful usage of the evaluation techniques taught by Toastmasters International. She is an individual who has always had a keen eye for detail whenever delivering on a leadership role. The Evaluation Contest features a 2 to 3 minute evaluation of a target speaker’s speech. The contestants are to listen to and evaluate it; subsequently delivering their oral evaluation of that target speech.

The second and third place runners up in Territory contests for the respective categories were the following:

Humorous Speaking Contest: 2nd Place – Brenton Hilaire & 3rd Place – Velda Wade

Evaluation Contest: 2nd Place – Brenton Hilaire & 3rd Place – Irwani Simon

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and International speech contests. The competition begins with club contests and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels.
