Dominica sympathizes with China following ferry disaster

Chinese ferry 3Dominica extended condolences, prayers and support to the government and people of China following what is being described as the worst maritime disaster in decades which claimed the lives of over 400 people.

A Chinese cruise ship, The Eastern Star, capsized during rough weather in what was said to be a freak storm on Monday night on the Yangtze River.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dominica sympathizes with the government and people of China, especially with the families affected by this unfortunate disaster.

“We want to thank the Chinese government profusely for its continued solidarity with the government and the people of Dominica,” he said.

“At this time I would like to extend our own condolences to the government and the people of China, specifically with the families of the disaster which happened on the Yangtze River a couple days ago.”

According to Mr. Skerrit one life lost is too many, “far more for 400 people who have not been able to be accounted for.”

Additionally he stated, “Notwithstanding the size of the population in china, every life is important and 400 lives and 400 families have been affected…”

China’s state broadcaster reported on Sunday that hundreds of bodies retrieved from the Eastern Star had pushed the death toll above 400, as the search for dozens more bodies was expanded to more than 1,000km down the Yangtze river.
